I want to play a storm-giant-like character, but I am not sure how to set it up. I am aware that there are Goliaths and other such races, but they are more brutish strength based. I am more interested in the cloud or storm giant, which are more arcane. Maybe genasi-like, where i am a descendant of a giant.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

There's actually a UA class for a Giant Soul sorcerer, with different magic and abilities depending on what giant type your character is descended from.
Alternatively, if you really want to capture the feel you could just play as a Genasi that's 8 feet tall. You'll probably have to get more into homebrew, though, if you want to play as a Large creature.
There is a reason why no official characters are Large. It screws with the game more than a flying creature does.
I'm curious: how? It makes you better at blocking off passageways, but that doesn't seem all that big a deal. Also available pretty early using Wild Shape into a Large creature or using Enlarge/Reduce.

I have often wondered this as well and Auras always comes up. Not really an issue considering Auras are not exactly common.
thanks so much. this really answered my problem. i think i'll go with the rune knight or giant soul

It would be twice as easy to gain flanking against you and with all of those facings the sheer number of opportunity attacks against you could potentially be very very much not good. Also, technically you wouldn't be able to fit through many doors or passageways (during combat at least) among other things.
It's because weapon attacks for large creatures double the normal number of damage dice.
There are no official rules for how weapon attacks for large creatures work. That happens to be true for the examples we have, but nothing says why it's true or that it has to be true.

A class option that you may want to check out for this concept is the Rune Knight. Its a Fighter archetype from UA revolving around giants and includes an ability to grow large. https://media.wizards.com/2019/dnd/downloads/UA-RuneSwarmRevived.pdf
