Hey all. My players are currently on their way to a town called 'Aerodrive', named after 'Port Town Aerodrive' from F-Zero. Building on the theme, I thought it would be fun to dedicate a session or part of a session to racing, sort of like that Pod-Racing segment from Star Wars Episode 1, except not terrible. My world is a steampunk-y setting, so it would be easy enough to come up with some sort of racing machine.
Does anyone know of any racing mechanics that I could use for this, or how I should handle it in general? I don't believe any exist in the official rules, that I can recall.
Something else, I would probably do it by skill checks. Animal Handling (Dex - because it's about speed more than anything else) for mounts, Navigation (Dex) for any vehicles.
Throw in a Con check of some kind if it is a long distance thing rather than a short race. Failed Con gives penalties to the Dex checks above.
As with a Chase scene, have about 3 contested rolls, fill in the details for the characters. A 1 = trip or stumble, a 20= a grand lunge/leap. More than 5 contested rolls can get boring for players, but a minimum of 3 should clearly establish the better athlete, or who gets caught or gets away.

I'm pretty sure Descent into Avernus has a racing component you could draw from.
You can also use the Chase Mechanics as a base and modify them into Race Mechanics.
Is it a foot race or something else?

Foot race should be a contested athletics check.
