This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Hello all! I have been thinking of creating a world based around chaos and order. The world would be a high magic world, due to the abundance of magical stones that give you magic powers. They are quite cheap too, making it so even a simple craftsman could attain magical powers. The world will focus on wild magic and clockwork soul sorcerers, renamed chaos and order sorcerers.. It would have expanded wild magic surge tables and wild magic based subclasses for other classes.
While chaos and order might be seen by some, chaos bad, order good, it would not necessarily be good or bad but could be either. A chaos sorcerer might be good and help people, except every once in a while they might also accidentally hurt someone badly. Order sorcerers could also be evil, they might kill off chaos sorcerers in order to purge chaos from the world.
It would feature a sort of cold war between the Immaculate City of Order, [name in progress] and the Fluctuating City of Chaos, [name in progress]. There is also other independent islands and areas, most giving their allegiance to chaos. There would be weaker versions of most of the gods from the faerunian pantheon. There would also be two gods that are something halfway between a god and a overgod representing chaos and order.
Here are some ideas of how chaos and order could be seen in the world.
Chaos
Good: Chaos could be seen as a chance. It could be a change for a better. With chaos you have a chance at winning. A chance at prospering. At chance at life.
Neutral: Chaos could be looked at as randomness. What will the dice roll? What will the cards turn out to be? Will I roll a 5? 7.
Evil: Chaos could be thought of as misfortune. Oh no! You tripped on a stone and fell! Oh no! You seemed to have contracted a magical disease! Oh no! People saw you doing something and got the wrong idea!
Order
Good: Order could mean happiness. Everyday you go to your dream job. Everyday you watch the morning sun rise with a cup of tea. Everyday you go to sleep in a fluffy bed.
Neutral: Order could mean routine. Everyday you go to your job. Everyday you watch people go by your house, peddling their wares. Everyday you go to sleep in a bed.
Evil: Order could mean despair. Everyday you try for a job and get refused. Everyday you watch as your friends and family wither away. Everyday you go to sleep on the ground.
See what I did there? What other meanings could you think of?
Here are my questions:
1. Does this idea sound good? I recently played a wild magic sorcerer and I had a lot of fun. That gave me the idea to build a world based around wild magic sorcerers.
2. Are there any gods of chaos not associated with evil? It would be easier to base the god off another deity, but it seems most chaos gods are portrayed as evil. I probably would want a more neutral god so if you know of one, please tell me!
3. I have trouble with naming things. What should I name the towns and cities?
4. Should I write more about this? Do you have any ideas for this world? Is there any useful supplements out there that I could use? If so, please tell me!
I love this idea! It sounds really cool and fun to make!
For your second question, I'm going to have to go with a slight no. In my homebrew world, the god of chaos is CN, but I don't know of any in official worlds. Maybe you could make them a kind of god of change, neither good or bad, but never constant, always fluctuating.
To answer your third question, I think they're called greater deities.
To answer your fourth question, I've never had a problem coming up with names, because D&D is fantasy. You can choose the most, random, weird name ever and it'll be perfectly fine. Just as a suggestion, you could name the cities based on what they represent. For example, a city of order could have a generic name (or even a pattern of 0s and 1s), and a city of chaos could have a cluttered mix of vowels and consonants.
For your fifth (question? statement?), I agree with you. Wild magic sorcerer gets a lot of hate.
For your sixth, yes, you should write more. I don't have any ideas now, but I'll edit my post if I come up with any. And I highly recommend you get Tasha's Cauldron of Everything for the Wild Magic Barbarian, Order Domain Cleric, and Clockwork Soul Sorcerer, or you can purchase those subclasses individually. If you're okay with homebrew, I made a Chaos Domain Cleric, which you can find here.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking
To answer your third question, I think they're called greater deities.
Great! Thank you!

Oh! I forgot about the order domain cleric! The chaos domain cleric is great! I would love to use it if you are fine with that. Thank you!
5. You don’t really need to edit it, it’s fine on it's own.
True. Still, I will edit it a little so players have more chances to wild magic surge. I might also have additional wild magic surge tables based on the type or level of the spell.
6. YES! Include two extra races which can emulate Order and Chaos. As TTB said, Tashas is a good source.
Thanks! That's a good idea. I am inexperienced with homebrewing (this is one of my first attempts) but I will try!
I have after too much deliberation have came up with a few names for my world!
Sors Rest, the Immaculate City of Order
Kez Madul, the Fluctuating City of Chaos
Narshe, Greater Deity of Order
Neamol, Greator Deity of Chaos
I still can't think of a name for the world. It probably will go along the lines of Caor or Caord. I will add more about my world soon. Thanks for the feedback and support!
It's a good theme. It needs to be fleshed out with a few more particulars. Maybe one or the other is dominant in the world at present. Maybe the capitol is dominated by chaos. But there are pockets of order. Maybe an archipelago kingdom where order reigns. Underground secret societies that observe a strict orderly regimen. Etc.
You can take ideas like that and generate unique locations and characters. Your theme is a very symmetrical conflict of opposites, but your world needs to be asymetrical and individual.

Thanks! Yes I agree. Chaos is more dominant in the world and always has been. Order is quite a new concept, only really getting a following a few centuries ago, when the general wealth of the world came to a point where it could be better to have an more orderly life. Generally, richer people are more likely to follow order, yet there was still only a few followers of order back then. Narshe was just a regular god back then.
This was the way until 50 years ago. 50 years ago, demons (I might change it to be something other then demons) invaded the jungles of Lower Caor, now known as [name in progress, probably will be along the lines of Ordre]. Myrna Giantblood a halfling chaos sorcerer defended Lower Caor. She fought and fought, killing thousands of demons. Myrna carved her way through the army until she reached the portal letting all the demons in, supervised by the demon lord Dom. A great battle ensued and Myrna Giantblood cast a spell with amazing destructive energy, banishing the demon lord, and destroying the portal. Unfortunately, Myrna's wild magic started up and due to casting such a powerful spell, it turned Lower Caor into a desert. Killing thousands of people. After that, and many other similar events on a much lower scale, the remaining city on Lower Caor, Sors Rest, turned to order, elevating Narshe into a greater deity. They then used their great mages, to separate Lower Caor from Caor. Now, while Neamol still has a much greater following, Narshe is not too far behind.

That's some pretty cool lore! It's somewhat similar to the lore of my homebrew world, actually.

ERftLW's manifest zones and TCoE's supernatural regions would work well for magical regions that imbue the stones with magic, and AI's verdan would be good for a chaos based race.
Wish I had time to comment more, but I can answer your god question at least. Avandra is one chaos-related deity who’s very much good! (Not sure how much press she’s got in 5e, but she’s been around for some time.)

Thanks! Perhaps I can implement Avandra into it representing a par of chaos.

I will have to read up on them, thank you!
Speaking of magic stones...
CAO: This substance, everchanging in shape, size, and color, will give you the powers of chaos. It is said to be pure, condensed chaos in the form of anything. There have been known to have been living Cao, if only for brief moments. After ingesting it by dissolving it in water and a few years of study, you will be on the path to being a Sorcerer of Chaos.
TIL: This hard glowing white substance takes the form of a perfect sphere. Ingesting this substance by dissolving it in water, gives you the powers of order. It is said to be pure condensed order in material form. After ingesting it and a few years of study, you will be on the path to being a sorcerer of Order
They will also have additional effects other then these
If you are willing to help, here are things I will need. I will probably do most of these, but if you could help, that would be amazing!
Chaos and order themed subclasses and races
I will be making Chaos and Order subclasses for a few classes and races. I will be tweaking the Verdan so they become more focused on Chaos, and less focused on Telepathy. Also the Verdan won't be a new race so they probably won't get the charisma buff.
How you could help: If you know of any already made subclasses or races that focus on chaos or order, great please tell me! It doesn't matter if they are homebrew or from previous editions, or even different games entirely! It would be much easier to base a subclass off something, then make an entirely new one. If you are willing to work with me, and help create them, thank you so much!
More Chaos Surge tables (Chaos = Wild magic)
I will need more wild magic surge tables. For example, I am thinking of giving chaos aligned races additional, optional, Chaos surge tables more suited for each race. That race has the option to use their chaos surge, instead of the general one. Also, I am thinking of giving higher level spells more powerful wild magic surges. Level 1-3 would be the regular surge table, level 4-6 would be a stronger? Medium? surge table, and level 7-8 would be a greater surge table. Level 9 would be the ultimate surge table.
How you could help: If you know of any good homebrew wild magic surge tables, or a homebrew wild magic table that has a theme, like a fey wild magic table (that probably doesn't exist yet) that would be great! If you are willing to help me make chaos surge tables, that would be amazing. However you can help would be great! Thank you!
History and lore
I will be writing history and lore for this world. A lot of it will be more focused on the Chaos aspect of this world, rather than the Order aspect of this world, due to Order being relatively new.
How you could help: I will be doing most of the writing for this world, but if you have any ideas for a possible historical event, I would love to hear it! Thank you!
Areas of the world
I will also be writing about the areas of this world.
How you could help: Tell me if you like it! If you have any towns or villages you know of or have made and you are fine with adding them to this world, that would be great too! Thank you!
Things I'm forgetting
I have that odd feeling where you are pretty sure you forgot something but don't know what!
How you could help: I forget...
What would probably be most helpful and easiest to do
If you give me constructive criticism that would be great! I really need it, and it would really make this world better! Please argue with me!
Phew! I feel like I just wrote a kickstarter!
Now if you just donate 1 dollar I will be able to truly flesh out this world! (Just kidding!)
Ha ha. Thank you guys so much! Anything you can do would be helpful. If I've written anything badly, please tell me, and I can tell you what I was trying to say!
Here's two quick wild magic tables for level 1 and level 2 spells. Use/modify them as you want.
Level 1 Table 1d100
1-90
No effect
91-95
The intended spell is cast, but it instead targets the caster. If the intended target was the caster, roll again and use that result instead.
96-100
Each creature in a 30 foot circle centered on the caster must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 2d6 force damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one.
Level 2 Table 1d100
1-85
No effect
86-90
The intended spell is cast, but it instead targets the caster. If the intended target was the caster, roll again and use that result instead.
91-95
Each creature in a 30 foot circle centered on the caster must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 3d6 force damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one.
96-100
Each creature in a 10 foot circle centered on the caster has their speed reduced by 10 feet until the end of the caster’s next turn, and must make a Constitution saving throw or fall prone.

Barbarians of the Path of Order embrace the concept of Order - it offers infinite stability and comfort to them. They are enforcers of order, and combatants of Chaos. To them Chaos is unpredictable -one minute you could be rich, the next, penniless. Your rage is used to defeat the forces of chaos.
Commanding Presence.
When you choose this path at 3rd level, you gain the ability to enforce the rules onto other creatures. While raging, you can use your action to cast the Command spell. The dc for this spell equals 5 + your level. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Zone of Order.
Beginning at 6th level, you can release an aura of control. Using an action, any creature hostile towards you within 5 ft. at the time of activation becomes indifferent for one minute, preferring civil discourse over attacking. After this effect ends, the creatures become hostile, and all their attacks have advantage. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Invoke Order.
Starting at 10th level, when you take damage from a spell of 3rd level or higher, you can cause them to make a wisdom saving throw (dc 8 plus your proficiency bonus) or be paralyzed for 30 seconds. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Orderly Rebuke.
Starting at 14th level, you gain the ability to smite chaos. When someone uses a Wild Magic Surge, you can use a reaction to immediately give the creature disadvantage on the next attack roll, ability roll, or saving throw. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

At level 20, the DC for Commanding Presence is through the roof. You should make it 8+prof. bonus+STR/CON. Zone of Order should have a saving throw. For Invoke Order, you don't specify who is paralyzed. Also, time is not measured in seconds. Change the duration to 1 minute or 'until the end of your next turn.' Orderly Rebuke is somewhat dull for a capstone feature. Also, you shouldn't make every feature recharge on a short or long rest. It makes a player feel useless once they've gone through one or two combats.

Thank you! I like the idea of this. I like how you described it. Can I add some more to this?

Perhaps instead, you can use it times equal to your proficiency bonus?

After this effect ends, the creatures become hostile, and all their attacks have advantage. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Maybe you add in "This ends for the creature if it has taken damage or the duration is up." Also maybe a saving throw?
Invoke Order.
Starting at 10th level, when you take damage from a spell of 3rd level or higher, you can cause the caster of the spell to make a wisdom saving throw (dc 8 plus your proficiency bonus) or be paralyzed for 30 seconds. What if, going with the theme of paralyzing make it this:
Orderly Rebuke.
Starting at 14th level, you gain the ability to smite chaos. When someone Chaos Surges or uses a Chaos spell, you can use a reaction to paralyze them until the start of their next turn. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus.

The dc for this spell equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wis. modifier.
After this effect ends or the target takes damage, the creatures become hostile and all their attacks have advantage against you. You can use this a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. Once you expand all uses of this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Invoke Order.
Starting at 10th level, when you take damage from a spell of 3rd level or higher, you can cause them to make a wisdom saving throw (dc 8 plus your proficiency bonus) or be paralyzed for turns equal to the level of the spell.
Orderly Rebuke.
Starting at 14th level, you gain the ability to smite chaos. When someone uses a Wild Magic Surge, you can use a reaction to immediately give the creature disadvantage on the next attack roll, ability roll, or saving throw. Once you use this feature a number of times equal to your Wis. modifier (minimum of 1), you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

1. Totally! I would play this if it was published.
2.I don’t know of any gods of chaos...
3. I think they're called greater deities also.
4. https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/ Will help.
5. You don’t really need to edit it, it’s fine on it's own.
6. YES! Include two extra races which can emulate Order and Chaos. As TTB said, Tashas is a good source.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking
Great! Thank you!
Makes sense.
Yeah I guess it was a statement...
Oh! I forgot about the order domain cleric! The chaos domain cleric is great! I would love to use it if you are fine with that. Thank you!
Thanks!
Yeah... It seems I will have to make my own...
Great! Thanks!
Yes, I love that site.
True. Still, I will edit it a little so players have more chances to wild magic surge. I might also have additional wild magic surge tables based on the type or level of the spell.

True. Thank you for your help!

ERftLW's manifest zones and TCoE's supernatural regions would work well for magical regions that imbue the stones with magic, and AI's verdan would be good for a chaos based race.
I have a weird sense of humor.
I also make maps.(That's a link)
Wish I had time to comment more, but I can answer your god question at least. Avandra is one chaos-related deity who’s very much good! (Not sure how much press she’s got in 5e, but she’s been around for some time.)
Wizard (Gandalf) of the Tolkien Club

Level 1 Table
1d100
1-90
No effect
Level 2 Table
1d100
1-85
No effect

The link doesn't seem to work... When I clicked into it, all it showed me was a black screen. Is it searchable? What is it?
Thank you! For level 1-3 I will probably use the regular wild magic surge table, but I can use these for level 4-6!
Thank you! I like the idea of this. I like how you described it. Can I add some more to this?
Perhaps instead, you can use it times equal to your proficiency bonus?
Maybe you add in "This ends for the creature if it has taken damage or the duration is up." Also maybe a saving throw?
*Pairs this with mage slayer
What if, going with the theme of paralyzing make it this:
Orderly Rebuke.
Starting at 14th level, you gain the ability to smite chaos. When someone Chaos Surges or uses a Chaos spell, you can use a reaction to paralyze them until the start of their next turn. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus.
OR
Starting at 14th level, you gain the ability to smite chaos. When someone Chaos Surges or uses a Chaos spell, you can use a reaction to paralyze them until the start of their next turn. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier.
I agree.
