New DM, new to 5e as well. Played a few one shots back in high school...that was 20 plus years ago. Now 40 y/o who was thrust into DM spot cause I want to play. I’m far from great but hope the troupe will still enjoy the effort. Have a group of friends that meet on Discord, like minded 25-40 year olds I use to play video games with.
Still feeling out the position of DM, they’re very patient and understanding.
I started with Out of The Abyss, tho thinking of taking a break from that module after they find a way out. I don’t we have the fortitude to complete it atm. Plus I need more experience as DM. Holy moly is DMing harder that I thought.
Word of warning, while there is a lot of good advice around there is also a lot of bad advice around. If you see something that feels wrong or bad then ignore it. Duh, right? Sometimes it needs to be said.
Actually thinking of breaking up the Out of the Abyss Module withe a series of one shots.
The group makes it out of the Underdark, Neverlight Grove intact since they’ve befriend Stool and become quite fond of them.
Then a series of one shot dungeons and a few downtime episodes to build their level and build the character background (not to mention give me a bit more experience). Stool will send them dreams of a now besieged Grove by Zuggtmoy and her servants, and a timely message from dwarf kingdom of Gauntlgrym.
That sounds like a pretty solid plan, one shotting the stuff you can manage.
And I want to point out you don't have to finish your out of the abyss adventures, you can switch to anything you or the players want. Be like water! Flexible, fluid, go with it
Welcome to the world behind the screen! Good luck, and remember: nobody on here, even if it’s Matt Mercer in disguise, can help you run a good game more than a quick talk with your friends. Communicate with the players and you’ll already be a top tier DM!
I haven't played any of the published adventures, but Out of the Abyss is often named as one of the harder adventures to run, and several of the "Internet DMs" out there in reviewing modules have admitted that even they and their groups have not finished it because of this. So there is no shame in saying, if you and your players are starting to get sick of one adventure, we want to change to something else. Even the so-called "pros" do that.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
I can see that OotA is a slog ... but, isn't it sorta designed that way? I can see that a PC would feel like "Crap, we just made it out of there barely with our lives. Kaiju sized demons are entering the material plane. How are we suppose to contend with that?!" And then the PC's would just be like, "Thanks, but no thanks ... lets go do 'yadda yadda yadda.'"
I'll dangle the fruit of returning and if they bite, they bite.

Yeah, I would imagine so. Noted though, thanks for the warning.
