I was making backup characters for a campaign I'm in, and I wanted something special for my barbarian. Problem was, we're only allowed uncommon items as of right now, so the best great axe I could find was a +1 with some flavor text. Deciding to homebrew one since I couldn't find anything interesting, I had a stroke of genius. My barbarian's specialty is that he's a jeweler, sort of a freak on the field and a gentlemen off the field. I thought, what if I made a great axe that could scale in power based on where our party level was at? And that's how the "Axe of Mineralogical Might" was born. An enchantable great axe that uses infused gemstones to boost it's capabilities. The only issue is, I'm pretty new to DnD, especially homebrew, so my balancing knowledge and creativity is basic at best. The goal is to have several possible enchantments at each level, (Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare, Legendary) and coming up with that many unique ideas by myself seemed like a really rough time. So, I turn to the internet for help. For what it's worth, I thought of some simple elemental enchantments, like added lightning damage for Topaz, necrotic for Onyx, stuff like that. Oh, and if you have any better ideas for a name, please share that as well.

i could help im fairly experienced and have done gem based homebrew in the past.(school of gemstones wizard link in sig)
I'd appreciate the help! As I said in the post, my idea for the uncommon level enchantments would be elemental damage. I was thinking something like 1d6, possibly more or less depending on how my dm wants to balance the damage. The real help I want is for the enchantments after uncommon level, especially for the Very Rare and Legendary levels since we could get pretty creative with that level of power. Probably would save the really expensive gems like emeralds, rubies, diamonds (the good ones anyways), etc. for the Legendary enchants. And as I am writing this, me and my dm have come up with some basic guidelines. Simple, non-specific gems like Onxy, Rubies, Emeralds, anything that isn't wholly unique, would be basic damage ups, with the elements depending on the gem. The cool, unique stuff would go to the one-of-a-kind gems that are ridiculously rare. Still working on ideas for those, so any ideas for that I'd be happy to hear. Don't worry too much about the gems themselves, just throw out ideas and we'll slap them onto whatever gem seems appropriate.
Sweet! I showed these to the dm, seems like he enjoys them! I appreciate the help, and if you happen to come up with anymore, I'd love to hear them. Thanks again!

okay i lied i have too much time here they are
amber:radiant damage (2d6) once per round instead of dealing radiant damage you heal yourself 1d6 (very rare) angelite:once per day cast spirit shroud.these spells can be concentrated and vast during rage (uncommon) apache tears:reroll wisdom saves every turn ending effects on success.wisdom saves are made with advantage (very rare) azurite:**** illusions(advantage on all saves caused by illusion spells and checks to see through illusion) plus advantage on insight (rare) carnellian :once per day cast hast on self.casting and concentrating ignores rage (very rare) diopside:you gain 60ft tremorsense (rare) golden obisidian:you reflect radiant and force damage with the axe and you can force a dc 14 con save or one blind once per short rest as an bonus action, ( rare) Herkimer Diamond (diamond quartz):advantage on deception checks to impersonate things plus once per day alter self ignoring rage ( rare) iolite:when you dismiss a rage or spell you gain 3d6 temp hp(very rare) jet:darkness once per day (rare) Labradorite:60ft telepathy (rare) lapis:when you cast a spell with the axe you can cast another spell as part of the same action or regain hp equal to the level of the spell cast(very rare) Moldavite:you learn a cantrip of your choice (which can be used during rage) at the end of a long rest you can switch out the cantrip for another one of your choice (rare) moonstone:once per day cast reverse gravity (legendary) ocean jasper:once per day control water (very rare) opal:once per day hyponotic pattern saves against it are made at disadvantage (very rare) petrified wood:flesh to stone (very rare) quartz:at the start of each long rest this stone turns into another stone of very rare or lower rarity (legendary)
the magic stones can be aquired if the dm gives you one or you can craft them as a magic item of the approtite rarity (costing the min possible for that rarity of magic item and if you do not the required spells you can add ten times their level to their gp cost)
Yeah, I think he knows that he's gonna have to keep his purse tight when giving us gold, or more specifically me, later on. As always, if you happen to come up with anything else, I'd be more than happy to show it to the dm. Thanks!
