I'm creating a home brew race and i want it to have spell casting of some pretty powerful spells, but i want it to be tied to an ability so it isn't op (think rage but with spells) I want it to last for three turns then be unusable until a long rest. Does anyone know how to do this?
Create the racial trait to grant the spell. When the ph look at the form for the trait, below Basic Information you will see a number of subsections including one named “Spells,” expand that section and hit [ADD A SPELL]. Once the screen reloads you will be on the Spells subform.
The very first field on the Spells subform is titled “Spells,” select a single spell you wish to grant from the dropdown. Further down you can designate the “Spellcasting Ability,” and still further down you can either enter a “Number of Uses,” or designate “Uses by Ability Modifier.” Right after that set the “Reset Type” as “Long Rest.” Below that you have to set “Consumes Spell Slot” and “Counts as Known” both to “No,” and “Always Prepared” to “Yes.” In the “Additional Description” and “Restrictions”*1 fields you can input a note about the adjusted duration, something along the lines of “Limited Duration:: 3 Rounds.”*2
*(AFAIK, whatever info gets entered in the Restriction field doesn’t actually display anywhere on the character sheet. However, I doubt they would have created it for no reason, so I presume either it does something I just don’t know about, or else it was intended to display somewhere and they just haven’t finished coding it on the backend yet. I know they are updating a bunch of things. So that field may very well actually become relevant sooner or later, so it can’t hurt to enter your restriction in the field by that name as a form of future proofing your homebrew.)
*(You want to use “Rounds,” not “Turns.” If you write “turns” then the spell wouldn’t even last until the casters next turn if there are at least two other creatures participating in the encounter.
