I found a really cool homebrew race that I wanted to play as called half-drow/fallen aasimar. I had a lot of fun playing my character, but she recently went through a character arc where she was redeemed from being a fallen aasimar to a protector aasimar. I tried to find a homebrew race that would fit this, but could only find the homebrew race I already have, or ones that include dragon. I’m trying to make my own homebrew race for a half-draw/(protector) aasimar, but I’m having troubles figuring out how creating a homebrew race works. Can anyone explain it to me, show me a video that explains it, or just make it themselves if you know how? I need this new homebrew race by our next session next Saturday. Thanks for the read and any help you give me.
It’s not surprising you enjoyed that one. Normally a half-Drow would give up Skill Versatility to take Drow Magic, but that’s got both. Then they just added the base Aasimar’s Celestial Resistance trait too, and Celestial as another additional language on top. Then they added the Fallen Aasimar’s ASI, and Necrotic Shroud trait on top of that, and another spell at 7th level and bumped up the Darkvision by 40 additional feet too. It’s like getting the full benefits from two whole races at the same time without giving anything up to do it….
The easiest thing to do would be to use the “half-elf,” “Drow half-elf,” and “protector Aasimar” as templates for three different variant races to see how they are all put together and then choosing whichever is closest and adding the traits from the other two races to it, combining them into one single race for yourself. (That’s what it looks like PicayuneCowboy (the original author) did to make the one you have been using. Once you’re done you can just delete the extra, templates as they would no longer be needed.
If you don’t have access to all three of those to use as templates, then just start with the basic half-elf since that’s a free template. (It would also probably be the best place to start other than the Drow Half-Elf anyway.) You can increase the Darkvision that’s already there from 60 to 100, and add Celestial to the languages. Those should be easy enough to figure out.
If you don’t have access to the Drow or Drow Half-Elf as a template to see how Drow Magic works, you can use the Tiefling instead since it is a free template. Their Infernal Legacy trait is configured just like Drow Magic . You can see how it was programmed and replicate it for your race, you would just need to switch the spells to march the Drow instead. Just copy everything exactly and it will work exactly the same. You can even copy/past the descriptions and snippets*1 over too and just change the spell tooltips*2 to match the Drow spells (instead of the Tiefling ones).
That race you have been using includes the base Aasimar’s Celestial Resistance, and the Fallen Aasimar’s +1 Str and Necrotic Shroud trait. Protectors instead have +1 Wis and the Radiant Soul trait. If you don’t have access to the Aasimar as a template to see how it works, that should be easy to get around too. You could figure out how Celestial Resistance is programmed from the Tiefling if you need to, their Hellish Resistance trait is configured just like Celestial Resistance. Just swap the damage types to match the Aasimar Adding a +1 Wis (instead of Str) to the ASI that the Half-Elf already has should be pretty easy to figure out. As for the Radiant Soul trait, that’s just like setting up any other trait that grants an action with limited uses. You could use the Half-Orc as a template to see how their Relentless Endurance trait was programmed. The Action attached to that trait is what you want to replicate just change the “Activation Type” from “Special” to “Action” and use the description from Radiant Soul instead. You can even get the snippet*1 to display the correct damage for you too. The character sheet cannot currently handle temporary effects like only having a flying speed some of the time, but it can also only display one speed at a time anyway so that shouldn’t be a problem. Decide if you wanted it to be always on and just remember it only applies sometimes, or never on and just remember it does apply sometimes. If you don’t want it “always on,” it’s just some plain text. If you do, That’s a simple Modifier to add-
Not gonna lie, I had no idea just how broken this build was. I'm still pretty new to D&D. I don't think my DM realized it either as he did approve it when I showed it to him.
I did figure out how to make a homebrew race and tried to make it balance, though I'm not sure if I succeeded in balancing it or not. Here's the homebrew I made: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/831568-half-drow-protector-aasimar. If it seems broken or anything, could you possibly let me know so that I can try to balance it out a bit more? I don't wanna be a problem by using a broken race.
Hey, if you and your DM are cool with it, then it’s fine. Something is only “broken” if people say it is, and since I’m not in that game my opinion doesn’t really count. If nobody actually at your table complained, then there’s no problem. If you and your DM thought the other one was fine, then make your new one just like the old one, but with the Wis instead of Str and Radiant Soul instead of Necrotic Shroud.
Okay. I just wanted to make sure I didn't accidentally use another broken race. I don't think I did anything to break the game with my old build. At worse, I accidentally managed to max out my charisma at Lv.5 (I was playing a warlock, switching later to cleric after my character's redemption arc). I didn't even realize I had done this until someone pointed it out to me that I had maxed out the stat at such an early. I felt really bad about it, but everyone was just so amused that I managed to min-max without trying or even realizing it until someone pointed it out to me that we just let it slide. Hopefully my character will do better as a cleric without breaking combat with insane stats.

Modifier: Set->Subtype: Speed (flying)->Fixed Value: 30
I hope that helps.
