Hello, I was trying to make a magic item (a set of gauntlets in this case) that would give a PC advantage on Strength ability checks a limited number of times per day, with the item recovering 1 use per long rest or at dawn. I'm having hard time figuring out how to do this and was hoping someone could help me out. Am hoping to avoid both needing them to be armor in order to get the Strength restrictions and making a custom spell that gives advantage that the item cast however many times I set it.
You would make them as Wondrous Item instead of as armor.
Also, you wouldn’t really need a spell, just the item. The charges don’t have to attach to any Spellcasting at all. However, temporary effects such as you describe are not currently available on DDB, the Advantage would display as always on.
The problem I'm experiencing it that the only time I'm able to place a strength requirement to equip the item is when its an armor, which is something I'm not liking. When its a wonderous item (which is hat I'm aiming for) the strength requirement is grayed out and not selectable.
So I'll have to make a spell for the item then :/. Well, not the worse thing at least.
Can you explain why? If I had the spell only give advantage on the first Strength ability check a person makes and have it last only 1 turn round, wouldn't that work? Granted, I'd probably have to have multiple tiers that get more charges, but I'm not seeing what the problem could be.
There wouldn’t be any “problem,” but it wouldn’t actually work either. Spells don’t actually “do” anything at all. Oven if you wrote the spell and attached it to the magicitem, and cast it…. You would still have to manually roll with advantage as if the spell didn’t exist at all. By creating the spell you’re just making extra work for yourself without any benefit. (It’s all squeeze and no juice.) Temporary effects are not currently supported on DDB, and spells don’t actually interact with anything.
I mean, if it makes you happy to write the spell, then write the spell. But when you cast it and the little Advantage icon doesn’t appear on your character sheet and when you still have to manually roll with advantage anyway, just don’t be surprised is all.

You still wouldn’t need a spell. The spell won’t actually “do” anything anyway. It still cannot temporarily apply those bonuses.

Ah, that's what ya meant. Thanks for the clarification :). That is disappointing sadly :/. That applies to the help action as well?
It applies to everything. DnDBeyond does not currently support temporary effects of any kind.

That's a shame :/. Do you know if there are any plans on their part to change that, or will it remain unchanged?
They say they intend to change it, but it could be months or years. 🤷♂️ 5.5e may very likely be out first.

I'd probably wager on 5.5 or even 6th edition lol. Thank your for the help :). At least now I know more of the limitations here
