Ive been toying with an item that is a wand that functions like the Shadow Blade spell at will, and has charges for a the Darkness and Shield spell. What I cant seem to make happen is for the item, when set to a weapon, to work with the swap damage type modified when added to a PC in DnD Beyond. Here is the current form of the item: https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/4848921-greater-wand-of-infernal-shadow
Read what you suggested. great reading but did not answer what i was inquiring about.
when adding a modified, in the drop down for modifier type there is an option labeled "Replace Damage Type". Would this not change damage type and amount for a weapon?
As the Items & Equipment FAQ #1 states: no, it will not. There is no possible way to change a weapon’s base damage amount. That information is currently fed directly from the basic nonmagical weapon template. If you are about to ask why we cannot make basic equipment then I will again refer you to that same FAQ, this time to General FAQ #10. (I really, really did try to put answers to all of the most common questions in there.) You can swap the damage type, but not change the damage amount. At least not currently at any rate. 🤷♂️ Trust me, if it were possible I would know as I practically live in that homebrewer.
So after experimenting, that drop down DOES change the damage TYPE...just not the number and type of DIE used for damage. So a weapon based off of a dagger is still 1d4, even if you make it radiant or psychic damage instead of piercing. Thanks for the help anyway.

That’s the purpose of that modifier.👆 Just to change the type of damage, not the amount of damage.
Thanks for the help anyway.
I’m happy to help, although I’m not sure I did. Sorry I couldn’t provide the answer you wanted, but it’s the only answer there is.
There is another modifier that’s intended to add additional damage to the weapon’s base damage, but the dice roller and character sheet currently cannot combine them so all it does is list the additional damage as a note next to the base damage as a reminder for the player to roll that separately. But that also won’t change the weapon’s base damage at all, only list additional damage (like how the flame tongue weapons work). If you’re interested it’s “Modifier: Damage.”
If you don’t mind, can I ask for a small favor? I am always seeking to upgrade and improve that FAQ. I would like to know: what was it about the wording of the Items & Equipment #1 answer that was unclear? I appreciate you letting me know so I can make it better for the next folks who read it. Thanks in advance.
Sorry. Here is some good news, they are working on adding Actions to magic items, no idea how long it’ll be though before it’s ready. (You noticed all the glitches around here lately? That’s them jackhammering away on the other side of the character sheets getting stuff like that coded.)
I side stepped it by making base item a long sword, doing damage type swap out and then adding an extra 1D8 so get to the 2d8 shadow Blade offers. Seems to be a functional work around. Now I just have to figure out why, after adding ranged weapon trait, its only showing a 5/5 range increment...lol
*glares at the DnD Beyond gods* Well at least its good they didnt taunt us with a system to custom home brew stuff...or anything cruel like that!!! GGrrr ...GGrrr...

The easiest things to check first can be found in the General FAQ #6, and the Items & Equipment FAQ #s 1 & 6: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq).

I did read the FAQ and saw what your saying, but what the point of the Replace Damage Type option then?

I am aware of that , I simply wanted it to show up on the PC sheet at the right amount and type of damage. We dont use the roller, but thanks again!
I think I just missed the last sentence, which should have clarified it for me.
New question I did not see in FAQ.....
Is there a way to make a non weapon item, wand in this case, that will list a melee/ranged weapon attack in the attack/action list?
No, Actions are not yet supported on magic items. (I should add that question to the FAQ. Next update.)

Range, much like damage is something we cannot change. (More good news, I know. 🙄)
