Creating a race and they end up getting a cantrip and two spells later on, but I wanted to give the option of choosing which spell casting type you use for the race, just like with the fairy race. How do you add that option?
"Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race)."
Just to expand on what Lolths_Bane said, but you'll need to add the spells under each of the options (don't add them to the trait itself); so for the Charisma option you'll add each spell with Charisma as the spellcasting modifier.
At that point (one ability) I'd test it on a character to make sure you've got all the spells configured correctly to appear as (and when) you want them to. Once you've got it fully working for one ability score, then you can add the options for the other two. It's a bit of a pain, but getting it right with one ability first will mean if you make any mistakes you don't have to fix them in three different places.
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
I have read the above and do not understand how this works still. maybe because it was updated, but I cannot find a has options box or can figure out how to make the options adding spells to the options.

Enable the "has Options check box" with a check, create options and designate them accordingly via its descriptors and spell casting or etc.

You would make one Option for each of the three Ability scores, and attach the spells to each of the three Options.

For races there is no “has options” box, but otherwise it’s the same. As for adding spells to the options, please see #s 17 & 15 of that same Subclasses & Species FAQ.
