I have a magic item that casts a spell using up to 3 charges - 1 charge for the base 1st-level, 2 charges for 3rd-level, and 3 charges for 5th-level.
I've tested it out in the homebrewer and found that if I fill in the min/max charges as 1-3, it sets the spell on an equipped sheet as 1 charge for 1st, 2 charges for 2nd, and 3 charges for 3rd (which makes sense but I'd like to not do that).
And, of course, if I try to add multiple of the same spell to the item, it doesn't let me since... it's still one spell.
Is there any way to bypass this, should I just make a note of it, add the spells in via a feat instead, or something else?
It will always treat the spell level on a 1:1 basis with the charges. You will either need to have the spell cast at 1st-, 2nd-, & 3rd-levels, or else give it 5 charges.
The other thing you could do is make a couple homebrewed copies of the spell so it would technically count as three separate spells and not the same spell three times. Then you could designate the one copy to be cast @ 1st-level for min-max charges 1-1, another copy to be cast @ 3rd-level for charges 2-2, and the last @ 5th for 3-3 charges. That should work, you just wouldn’t be able to publish it, but you don’t need to just to use it in your home game.

Happy to help.
Hey, could you please do me a small favor? If you haven’t done it already, could you please upvote/like/“thank” a post for me and also vote “Very Helpful” in the poll? I’m hoping they’ll pin the thread if it does well enough so it can help more people more readily: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq). Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it.
