Trying to add equipment to a homebrew background, and it has been very difficult, as I am finding the instructions on the page very unclear. Can someone help explain how it is done?
When you first hit [ADD EQUIPMENT], a he very first step is to add an “equipment phrase.” So, for example, let’s take a look at the Acolyte background. When we look under the equipment section we see the following:
Equipment: A holy symbol (a gift to you when you entered the priesthood), a prayer book or prayer wheel, 5 sticks of incense, vestments, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 15 gp
That’s your whole “equipment phrase” right there. That’s the first thing you do. After that, you’re asked to break that down into smaller phrases for the character builder. DDB breaks that👆phrase down into a series of smaller equipment phrases for the character builder like this:
Every one of those boxes represents a smaller equipment phrase, the first being “A holy symbol (a gift to you when you entered the priesthood),” the second phrase is “a prayer book or prayer wheel,” etc. So the next thing you enter when adding equipment is break down your equipment phrase into smaller chunks to make it manageable in the character builder. With me so far?
The next thing you do is add the actual equipment that you described in that smaller chunk. If the smaller phrase gives everything it lists (like “this thing and this other thing”) then you can enter it all in together and it will all be granted. If instead it only gives them a choice of stuff (like “this thing or this other thing” the same way the Acolyte offers either a prayer book or a prayer wheel), then you enter them separately so the system gives the choice in the character builder. Make sense?
So, what is your “equipment phrase?” If you tell me I can help you break it down.
Ink bottle, a set of traveler's clothes, ink pen, 5 pages of parchment, 2 hunting traps, thieves' tools, 3 trinkets from previous bounties (roll on table PHB pg. 160-161), and a belt pouch containing 10 gold
If it were me, I would rearrange that slightly to make my life easier, and then you’ll have fewer steps to do. Like this:
A set of traveler's clothes, a bottle of ink an ink pen and 5 pages of parchment, 2 hunting traps, thieves' tools, 3 trinkets from previous bounties (roll on table PHB pg. 160-161), and a belt pouch containing 10 gp
That way these will be your mini phrases:
A set of traveler's clothes
bottle of ink an ink pen and 5 pages of parchment
2 hunting traps
thieves' tools
3 trinkets from previous bounties (roll on table PHB pg. 160-161)
and a belt pouch containing 10 gp
Then you just attach those items to those mini phrases, so the first one would be the clothes (Associated Data Type: Specific Gear->Specific Gear: Clothes, Traveler’s) and if you leave the quantity blank it’ll default to 1 for you automatically. Like this:
The second mini phrase would be the writing supplies, so you would do that like this:
The only ones that won’t be “specific gear” will be the three trinkets (which will be a “custom value”) and the gp (which will be “gold”). Like this:
Ahh. That was my mistake. My apologies, it’s been a long time since I created a background and I remembered it incorrectly. My bad. You will have to enter each of those mini phrases as its own “equipment phrase” and then it’ll grant all of them. Again, my apologies. (I’m a bit rust with backgrounds apparently. 😕)
Hello, I would like to know what I would do if I am going to make it if the player is going to choose between equipment--
I'd also like to know how to list the choices. Do I include the enumerating letters? (ex: Choose A or B: (A) a set of ammunition, a ranged weapon; or (B) a pouch containing 20GP)

Yes thanks for the help.
I did this and it worked, but the character builder only lets me choose one of the items
