I have been trying to create a race that starts with 60 feet of darkvision and 30 feet of truesight at level 1, and at level 10 goes to 60 feet for both. I have set all of the traits as granted, and for the single level 10 trait I set the "required level" to 10, otherwise all of the traits are set as granted. No matter what I change, it is always the same, and refuses to change at the higher level... and for some reason, if I set the sense as Set Base, it adds the starting darkvision 60 to the truesight 30 and gives it as 90 truesight and 60 darkvision, and refuses to change the values at higher levels.
Can someone please tell me how exactly I'm supposed to set up the two traits to get a starting Truesight of 30 and Darkvision of 60, and then at level 10 they go to Truesight of 60, and Darkvision of 60...
Yes, I know that if they have Truesight of 60, the Darkvision is redundant, but I just want the number to change at a higher level, and it's getting annoyingly frustrating that I can't get it to work, and I now have multiple different copies of this race in every variation I can come up with for the modifiers to try and get it to work while I switch a character back and forth between them all trying to get it to register properly... I still don't know what the difference is between "Set Base" and "Sense", but I have a variation of the race where they're both set to sense, they're both set to set base, and one for level 1 to have set base while level 10 has sense, and a variation for level 1 to have sense, and level 10 has set base... Regardless of the choices I've made, it refuses to work properly, I either get truesight of 30, 60, or 90 but it stays that way regardless of level.
Set Base is used to do exactly that, set a base range for a sense.
Sense is designed to add its value to whatever the PC is starting with. So if you use Sense->Truesight->30, it will add 30 to whatever it already has. If it has 0 ft. Truesight, it increases to 30, if it has 30 ft., it increases to 60.
The problem you’re encountering is that for racial traits, no matter what level they are set to kick in, they always automatically apply all Modifiers right away at 1st level. Setting them to higher levels only works for Actions.
You do have ways to make it work though:
Give your base level trait 2 Options, one that has Truesight @ 30, and the other @ 60 but requires 10th level to unlock it. Then tell the player to swap them at 10th.
Make the 60ft trait as “replacement” instead of granted and have the player swap them at 10th.
Make a separate racial feat for the increase with a level 10 prerequisite?
PS- Permanent Truesight, even at only 10 feet is broken.
