Hi (not certain if this is where i should ask for help in this sorta of matters, so i would be glad if its the wrong place for someone to redirect me to the correct one), I'm having a lot of trouble creating a racial trait for my Sea Angel inspired race, that goes like this "Can use a bonus action to open their head for 30 seconds, frightening any creature of their choice within 30 ft of them for 18 seconds (the target must succeed on a wisdom saving throw that is equal or higher than Dc 10+ half the user's class level+ the user's charisma modifier), it additionally allows them to grapple as a bonus action, makes unarmed strike deal (1d6+strength mod) piercing damage, and boosting walking/hovering speed by 10 ft. You can't use this again until you finish a long rest. The duration of the form and the frighten increase with level, 24 seconds of frighten on lvl 3, 30 on lvl 5, 36 seconds of both on lvl 7, 48 of both on level 10, 54 on level 13, and 60 on lvl 15. Aditionally, when choosing to grapple an enemy that has an equal or smaller size than you, you can choose to swallow it once per hunting mode (name we gave to the trait/ the whole thing) dealing 1d10 acid damage, the user must succeed on a grapple(contested atheletics check) and the enemy must fail on a Dc 10+ half the users class level+ the users strength modifier for it to hit", my main problem is that i have 0 clue how to make it work, the frighten mechanic me (and the other people i play dnd with) have sorted it out as in its just the description, you say the effect, and thats it, but i do not know how to make the increasing unarmed strike damage, boosting the walking/hovering speeds, or just make it give the action to grapple and then have the grapple give an action? or just having another action that only works while grapple thats the swallow..., resuming its a confusion, its my first homebrew content ever and i have 0 clue on how to do stuff and i don't understand a thing on the guides.. i rlly need a detailed explanation on how to do iit since i don't know much about dnd itself and i don't know where to even start to creating this trait aside from the name and description.. which are already one
First of all, yes, you absolutely posted in the correct place.
Second, almost nothing about that is designed to work with how the rest of D&D works at all, and here’s why:
Nothing in D&D is tracked in seconds other than a combat round which is 6 seconds long. Otherwise, the only other units of time used in D&D are 1 minute, 10 minutes, and then hours, days, weeks, and I think a few instances of things tracked in years but don’t quote me on that. Most things however are usually tracked in turns and rests (short or long). For anything with a duration shorter than 1 minute, they track things in turns, either stating “until the end of your turn,” or “until the start of your next turn,” or in some cases “until the end of your next turn.”
You stated that to activate the ability they must have their hand open for 30 seconds. That’s five 6-second rounds of combat. The average combat only lasts approximately 3.5 rounds. So the way you’ve designed it the PC will have to stand there with their hand open not doing anything for the entire fight which will be over before they character ever gets to use this trait.
You have the DC calculations set at 10+(½level)+modifier. Nothing in D&D calculates save DCs like that because the DC would be too low in the beginning, and then it would spiral until waayyy too high at higher levels. Also, you wrote “class level” but never specified what happens if they multiclass, so you would probably want to use “character level” instead, and you never indicated if they should round up or down. That’s why they use proficiency bonus instead of level to calculate DCs, it’s simpler, easier, cleaner, and better balanced.
You have things continue to improve until the PC reaches 15th level. Races stop giving or improving traits at 5th level.
There is no such thing as a “hovering speed” in D&D. There’s a “flying speed,” and some flying monsters can hover, but that something special on top of flying that PCs don’t usually get.
You wrote that the “form of the frightened” increases, but that makes no sense. There are no different forms of the frightened condition, something is either frightened or it isn’t.
You have the duration incrementing 1 round (6 seconds) at a time based on the character’s level. Tracking different things that last for different durations is a major pain for both players and DMs. That’s why nothing in D&D works like that. To represent that type of thing they simply have the duration last 1 minute and let the target make a saving throw at either the beginning or end of every one of its turns. As the PC levels up their proficiency bonus does too, which makes the DC higher so that the likelihood of the target passing a save is lower and therefore the duration statistically automatically gets longer on average.
You gave the PC the ability to swallow a creature the same size as it or smaller. Think about a full grown human adult swallowing another full grown human adult whole in one gulp. Not possible. Any creature in the game that has a swallow attack, such as the giant frog, can only swallow another creature that is at least one size smaller.
You wrote that they can swallow a creature and then give instructions on how that make no sense. First you wrote that it requires a contested check, then you gave a DC and state that the target has to fail a saving throw, then you say it has to hit which should require a standard attack roll. So which is it, a contested check, a saving throw, or an attack roll?
You wrote that if they swallow the creature it takes 1d10 acid damage… and then that’s it. What happens if that doesn’t kill the creature? The way you wrote it the PC would just run around with an entire living creature stuck inside of it forever, and since they could conceivably do this every day, and since they can swallow creatures the same size as themselves, then after a single week they could theoretically have up to 7 creatures the same size as themselves inside de of themself. That’s like you having 7 yous inside of you forever and ever, and that’s after only just 1 week.
Next, that is a whole, whole lot of stuff packed into a single racial trait. Like, way, waayyy too much stuff. That’s more complicated than most class features in the game. I seriously suggest simplifying it a bit.
Finally, most of what you want this thing to do isn’t actually possible in DDB’s system. Temporary effects like Actions that you can only do while something else is active, or temporary bonuses to speed are not supported by this website at all. It’s either always on, or always off.
My personal recommendation is to hold off on homebrewing stuff until you learn how the game works a little better. However, since I know you aren’t likely to follow that advice, here’s how I would suggest rewriting your racial trait to fit better with how D&D works:
Hunting Mode. As a bonus action you can open your hand to activate your hunting mode for up to 1 minute, you can end your hunting mode early at any time (no action required). When you activate your hunting mode, choose a creature you can see within 30 feet of you. That creature must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against a DC equal to 10 + your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus or become frightened of you for up to 1 minute as long as you remain in hunting mode and maintain concentration (as if on a spell). The creature can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the condition on itself on a success. While you are in hunting mode you gain the following:
Your speed increases by 10 feet.
Your unarmed strikes deal 1d6 piercing damage instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
You can attempt to Grapple a creature as a bonus action on each of your turns.
Whenever you make a successful unarmed strike against a creature you have grappled that is at least 1 size smaller than you, you can choose to swallow that creature. A swallowed creature is both grappled and restrained, and at the end of each of your turns it takes acid damage equal to 1d10 + your Constitution modifier. At the start of each of its turns a swallowed creature can attempt to escape using the normal rules for escaping a grapple. Once you swallow a creature you can’t swallow another creature until the next time you enter hunting mode.
Once you enter hunting mode you can't do so again until the end of your next long rest.
How’s that sound to you? Is that more or less what you were going for? If so lemme know and I’ll tell you how to program it into the system.
Ty for the advice, i actually did not make the rolls and the general dnd mechanics it was a friend that understands more of dnd so i thought it was all good when it wasn't, sorry about that, but anyways, i learned quite a lot with that, some of the english and wording is rather confusing since we did it in a rush because it was rlly late for us when we made the idea of the mode, but, its inspired on sea angels with some rather odd modifications, the main thing being that they open their head to swallow a creature whole with tentacle looking things and apendages, the "duration of the frighten" maybe needed more explanation but opening the head its like intimidating causing frighten and the duration of both the frighten and the duration of the mode, but yeah i will stop here, idk the idea of it scaling a lot with levels is mainly idk, it was my friends idea.., oh yeah the thing about it needing to be activated for 30 seconds to swallow its not there or wasn't at least our intention, the 30 seconds was supposed to be the duration of it, but the wording problems didn't help much, we called it hovering speed because it only hovers a bit off the ground so yeah.. our fault on that one, and yeah just talked with said friend and yeah we agree that your version is way better, and i would rlly appreciate if you could help program it, i would be thankful! (sorry for the 19 hours late reply... but when you actually sent it i didn't have dnd beyond open so yeah... my fault for that one), the main thing i noticed about the problems is that yeah... quite bad wording on our end and some lack of knowledge or attention, which lead into some rlly beginner mistakes (which i would 100% do but not my friend, he even corrected some of the stuff, but it was 5-6 hours after i sent this message and i kinda forgot about it (thank dnd beyond notifications for warning me someone answered)
Oh, no worries, no need to apologize for anything. You didn’t do anything wrong at all. You should’ve seen some of my first attempts at homebrewing back in 2e, talk about rough. Holy cow, you could’ve grated cheese with them. And forget about the response time, this is the internet, sometimes it takes days for people to respond to one another. Heck, the other day I just saw someone post a reply to a response from a year ago. “Is no bigga deal” as Antonio (guy I used to work with) used to say.
Good, I’m glad you found it informative. Sometimes when I go on like that some folks take it in a way I don’t intend and they get offended. So I’m glad it was helpful to you as that was what I was going for.
For that part about the “hovering speed,” that would still be a flying speed, and it would include the hover mechanic, it just has a relative altitude limit is all.
No worries about it being late and you being rushed either. Tell the truth I was rushing a bit for the same reason when I wrote my response, and I’ve noticed some things about my version that could be improved too. To that point, here it is again with some revisions. The revisions may seem minor, but they make a difference.
Hunting Mode. As an action, you can open your head and activate hunting mode. Your hunting mode remains active for up to 1 minute, and you can end it early at any time (no action required). When you activate it, choose a creature you can see within 30 feet of you. That creature must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against a DC equal to 10 + your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus or become frightened of you as long as your hunting mode is active and you maintain concentration (as if on a spell). The creature can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the condition on itself on a success. While hunting mode is active, you also have the following benefits:
Your speed increases by 10 feet.
Your unarmed strikes deal 1d6 piercing damage instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
You can attempt to Grapple a creature as a bonus action on each of your turns.
Whenever you hit a creature you are [Tooltip Not Found] tthat is at least 1 size smaller than you with an unarmed strike, you can choose to swallow that creature. While swallowed it is both grappled and restrained, and takes 1d10 + your Constitution modifier acid damage at the end of each of your turns. At the start of each of its turns, a swallowed creature can attempt to escape using the normal rules for escaping a grapple. Once you swallow a creature, you can’t swallow another until the next time you activate hunting mode.
Once you enter hunting mode you can't do so again until the end of your next long rest.
To be honest, setting this up in the system will be relatively simple since DDB doesn’t support temporary effects. So really, all you’re going to have to do is add a few Actions to the trait, one to represent activating Hunting Mode (& frighten), one to put the bonus action grapple on the character sheet, one for the d6 unarmed strike, and one for the swallow; and then make sure all your snippets are in order. Most of the snippets will be pretty simple too though, since they don’t really require any calculations or dynamic numbers.
Here’s what I would use as the snippet for the main racial trait:
Once per long rest, as an action, you can activate your hunting mode for up to 1 minute unless you can end it early. When activated choose a creature you can see within 30 ft. to make a DC {{savedc:cha}} WIS save or be frightened as long as hunting mode is active and you maintain concentration, it can repeat this save at the end of each of its turns. While hunting mode is active your speed increases by 10 ft., your unarmed strikes deal <strong->1d6 piercing damage, and you can Grapple as a bonus action. Once while hunting mode is active, when you hit a smaller creature you are grappling with an unarmed strike you can swallow it. While swallowed it is both grappled and restrained and takes 1d10{{modifier:con}} acid damage at the end of each of your turns. It can attempt to escape at the start of each of its turns using the rules for escaping a grapple.
After you save the trait, next you need to add 4 Actions to it. Set them up just like in the images in the snippet below,* here are the snippets for them in order:
Once per long rest you can activate your hunting mode for up to 1 minute unless you can end it early. When activated choose a creature you can see within 30 ft. to make a DC {{savedc:cha}} WIS save or be frightened as long as hunting mode is active and you maintain concentration, it can repeat this save at the end of each of its turns.
While hunting mode is active your unarmed strikes deal 1d6 piercing damage.
While hunting mode is active you can Grapple as a bonus action.
*One note: After you save the Action for activating hunting mode, scroll all the way down and you will see a new subsection at the bottom of the form labeled “Limited Uses.” Click the button to add limited use data and in the Fixed Value field put a 1, then save that, and re-save the whole action again.
After you have added all of the Actions, re-save the whole racial trait again. Then re-save the whole race again.

I may not be much help but do it in smaller steps instead of everything at once as it sounds like your trying do.
