So one of my players has made a new class. One of the abilities is during combat he can get some boosted stats.
Currently, he has that after he uses it, he gains a point of exhaustion. However, since after most fights where he could need to use it, the party would long rest anyways
Therefore, there is no real reason for him not just use it every combat. So trying to figure out a good way to deter
Right now ive thought of
1. Gains double exhaustion
2. Roll a dice and for X days equal to the result one of his main stats is reduced
3. Every time he does it, there is a chance that he loses control for a few rounds of combat and then doesn't get the bonuses for combat plus exhaustion.
Any other ideas or is one of those good
Too be clear, I want him to use this ability, just not be the star of every combat or for me to make the enemies have way more HP to over come the advantage
Or change your DMing style, parties shouldn’t really be facing one combat per long rest, make sure they have several hard encounters to give him more choice when to use it.
DM wise, you could use "cunning" bosses who send waves of lesser minions and monitors the party, the player uses his boost ability, figt ends and party take a long rest, then the boss sends in his next wave which interupts the partys long rest. The boss doesn't have to be the big bad evil thing but any lieutenant with a couple of dozen soldiers under their command could use that tactic.
Monitoring the battle from afar can be as simple as hiding on a hill and using a telescope to watch (Zulu-esque tactic vs the British) or maybe they have their reserves hidden under ground ready to ambush the party (Vietcong vs the Americans in Vietnam). A long rest for the party means the monsters/npc's also have 4+ hours to prepare.
Another option, assuming the stat boost is for Str, Dex or Cons, would be have a Cons Saving Throw attached to it, fail the save and you cannot tell friend from foe for d3 rounds as your body floods with adrenaline and you go into a frenzy, it looks like the barbarian rage but you don't get any of the benefits and you just treat everyone as potential enemy. Make the DC equal to the boosted stat, so if they boost Strength to 18, they have to make a DC18 Cons Save to remain in control and succeed or fail they still get the level of exhaustion afterwards.
Another slightly less convoluted option to the above would be have the boosted stat require their concentration so the more danage they take the more chance they have of losing focus and losing the ability, if they lose it mid battle they might find that level of exhaustion to be a bit more of an inconvience.

Reduce the boosted stat?

That is a good idea
