I created a homebrew Improvised weapons, you know to put it on my action list so that I can use this easily with beyond20 and Roll20. Something buggy is happening however, I created the weapon as a dart, to have the range 20/60 and also with a modifier to damage STR to have the d4. In my actions I adjusted the to hit(because no proficiency without tavern brawler) and the damage(my +4 strength) with off course a minus -6 to hit and - 4 to damage. This gives me a normal improvised weapon when I removed proficiency. Now the strange thing is when I equipped the improvised weapon all the melee damage modifiers change from +4(18 strength barb) to +8, or double the modifier. Even stranger is that when equipped with one character all my other character sheets have also a doubled damage melee modifier. I filled a contact request with the support just a moment ago, but at that time I did not know what I did wrong. Sorry for that, but when I fiddled with the improvised weapon I saw it happen, every time I unequipped it all my character sheets were normal, and again when equipped with one character all my sheets show a doubled melee weapon damage. Please also let the guy with the support team know that this is cause the trouble.
My question is can you fix this or maybe actually add improved weapon in the equipement list. That since my homebrew is causing this f*up thing with the melee damage
Most users don’t bother. You can go on the “Actions” section of the character sheet and hit “Custom Action” (something like that) and there you can just do it there.
Thank you for this reply and I instantly tried this out, HOWEVER I don't like it. The custom action that you propose is excellent by the way but unfortunately it is not possible to create an improvised weapon with this method. I still need the weapon to work together with Roll20 and Beyond20, that means all I need to do is press the button from Beyond20 on my D&d Beyond sheet and it is displayed is Roll20. With this method it is not possible to adjust the to hit modifier and the damage modifier, improvised weapon reads as follow:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Sometimes characters don't have their weapons and have to attack with whatever is at hand. An improvised weapon includes any object you can wield in one or two hands, such as broken glass, a table leg, a frying pan, a wagon wheel, or a dead goblin.Often, an improvised weapon is similar to an actual weapon and can be treated as such. For example, a table leg is akin to a club. At the GM's option, a character proficient with a weapon can use a similar object as if it were that weapon and use his or her proficiency bonus. An object that bears no resemblance to a weapon deals 1d4 damage (the GM assigns a damage type appropriate to the object). If a character uses a ranged weapon to make a melee attack, or throws a melee weapon that does not have the thrown property, it also deals 1d4 damage. An improvised thrown weapon has a normal range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet."
So what I also need is to be able to change the damage modifier and the to hit modifier. If it was for playing at the table I believe your idea is working out. But to work with Beyond20 it is no so ok(I just want this to work as perfect as the rest please)
The problem is that one can only make a weapon on DDB based off of an existing weapon, so everything will give proficiency to at least some characters. Might I instead suggest a feat with an attached Action set as a Weapon Attack named ”Improvised Weapon.” That should still give you an actual attack to use with those other services, you can mark them to not use proficiency, to use Strength, and you can even make two actions, one for melee and one for ranged attacks. That was what I did for this subclass, I just made them as class features instead of as a feat, but it works the same way. Would that do it for your needs? Because there is no way to remove that proficiency issue.
By the way, if you do have to use a weapon, might I suggest the Light Hammer as the basis, same 1d4 Bludgeoning, same thrown range 20/60, it already uses Strength instead of Dex (like the Dart) so you won’t have to deal with that. And if you customize it directly on the character sheet to reduce the attack mod because of proficiency wouldn’t that go through to your VTTs?
(I honestly don’t know, I dislike VTTs. I don’t even use minis and grids, theater of the mind or nothing for me. Seeing someone else’s idea of what it looks like instead of the version my mind creates based on the verbal description breaks the verisimilitude for me.)

Wait, I’m a little confused. Were you attempting to customize the dart, or did you actually create the custom action? If you just make the custom action on the character sheet you can create the improvised weapon with any stats you like, and using any ability you like. I didn’t mean to use the customization option to adjust the dart. I meant to add a custom action and just set it to 1d4 bludgeoning, Strength weapon, non-proficient. You can make it melee or ranged, or one of each. It will show up on your character sheet as an attack just like weapons do, and you can make that do exactly what you want. Is the problem simply that it doesn’t work on those other services?
You do of course realize that an improvised weapon still ads the Strength Modifier to both the Attack and Damage rolls, It only omits the Proficiency bonus on the to hit roll?
So quite literally if you take a Light Hammer and customize it directly on the character sheet to reduce the Attack Bonus by your proficiency modifier if your character is proficient with that weapon (or just change the name if they are not) that you effectively have the exact stats for both an “Improvised Melee Weapon” and for an “Improvised Thrown Weapon” all in one. 1d4 Bludgeoning damage (the default damage type for an improvised weapon), Melee and thrown 20/60, and uses Strength. (Unlike the dart which is ranged only and so therefore uses only Dexterity.)
Otherwise, if the DM says “It’s 1d6 Piercing with Strength” you just use a javelin or to stab them with and drop the proficiency to that. Or if the DM says “Its the same as a Handaxe” then you can just use a Handaxe. If your character is proficient with Handaxes, you even still get to use your proficiency bonus to hit because it’s “just like a Handaxe.”
So do you mean that you want 1 weapon that you can change these things between attacks? Then the only way to do it on the DDB character sheet is with the “custom action,” that’s what it’s specifically designed for. Because it lets you pick the die, the range, proficient/not proficient, Strength/Dex/whatever, and it’s designed to be changed whenever, even between attacks in the same round. And since you have created an “Action” on the DDB Character Sheet, it should still be something that you can “you know to put it on my action list so that I can use this easily with beyond20 and Roll20.”
If you’re saying that you cannot change them through those other services, or that it doesn’t work on their end, then that sounds like an interaction issue with their services. DDB can’t do anything about someone else program, and they already have something for their own users.
Yes it is not clear to me if you are allowed to add you strength modifier since the explanation reads one d4
All weapons are like that. A Mace lists it’s damage as 1d6, not “1d6+Strength modifier” for example. To be absolutely clear, you can 100% use your Str mod for both the Attack and Damage rolls for an improvised weapon unless the DM tells you to use Dex instead.
Does that make your task easier? Would any of my suggestions work for your needs now?
Thanks that idea of yours works great. However there is still the bug. When I make the homebrew improvised weapon, strangely it doubles the strength modifier to damage, I have +4 strength and the damage is +8. And the bug also doubles the melee damage on other character sheets, only when I equipped the homebrew improvised weapon(on one of my characters)
Thank you for your help, my D&d is gettin better now with your tips and advice . Hope D&d Beyond still has a way to fix the bug

Happy to help. Just so you are aware there is an issue somewhere with the new character sheet and homebrews. So if you have a subscription that might be it. But just in case, what modifiers did you use exactly?
To be clear, you should not actually have to make an “improvised weapon” at all. Just add a regular Light Hammer to your characters inventory. On the “Equipment” page of the Character Sheet, you can tap that hammer, and hit “Customize” and change the name to read “Improvised Weapon”, and the weight to “0.”
Then, switch to the “Action” page of the character sheet, find the “Improvised Weapon” that is now populating the Action field with all the other attacks, and tap it again. Then, tap “customize” there and just put a negative attack modifier equal to your Proficiency bonus and the job is done. You shouldn’t actually have to “create” anything. Your Beyond20 should be populating it’s action field from this character page so it should still carry over to that.
Or, directly in the “Actions” section you can just “Create Custom Action” and just create an action to populate the field with the details, don’t mark it as “proficient” and do mark it as “display as attack.” You should not need an actual item in inventory at all, all you need are the strings of 1s & 0s to populate the Action Field. You can see for yourself what I mean. Not one of those is an actual “homebrew” Improvised Weapon. They should all work the same as far as beyond 20 works as far as I understand.
Hey IamSposta, I published the homebrew content. It's name is Improvised Weapons, by AiasWalaxyrvaan. You should be able to find it now and check this out. Maybe you can see for yourself if you add this to the equipement of a character. All the strength modifiers do double damage, and when you open a different character sheet the same happens without even having to equipe this weapon. Strange indeed. I hope I can answer your question with this.

No, I won’t be able to see the guts of the item. I’m not a Moderator, I just homebrew a fair amount. But I’m serious about you not having to actually create one. Follow these instructions and save yourself the headache:
