I am making a home-brew subclass for fighter and am trying to make a feature where there are charges that one can use to cast charm person. The amount of charges used changes the level cast. I have a specific level on each different charm person. Most everything works fine. All the charges can be used differently. 1, 2, 3 etc. all the way up to 9. but the charges only cast level 1 charm person. is this a bug? please help.
Subclasses don’t use “charges” so I’m not sure what exactly you mean. Did you set Charm Person to be cast at 1st level?
He might have set it to where you can add a feature, and the feature is Charm Person spell. So the Subclass has a feature that allows the subclass to use Charm Person.

I understand that. I have been homebrewing with this system for over a year. I know how it works. I am asking how they set “charges” because only Magic Items actually get charges. And depending on how they set up the class feature they might have set it to only cast the spell at 1st-level.

Not charges but im making it so you can cast charm person a certain amount of times and it won't let me use it to cast spells at different levels using more uses of the ability

I checked and there are only two ways I can think of to do anything close to what you want. You can either give them a feature named “Spellcasting” which will give them spell slots exactly like an Eldritch Knight, or you can just put it in as text and then make a magic item to function the way you want. At least until they finish revamping the homebrewer.
im considering just making a magic item. that might be the best solution cause Spellcasting doesn't seem to be working...
how do I do Spellcasting? I check yes on can cast spells and also gave some spells to choose from
You create a subclass feature and simply name it “Spellcasting” and that’s it. You don’t have to add anything to it other than the name and the description.
No need to apologize. Whatever you do, DON’T PUBLISH IT. If you do, fixing it is a pain. And I guarantee that you will want to keep fiddling with it for weeks even after you think it’s perfect.

Would It help if I posted my Subclass so you could look at it?
That’s because “uses” don’t work the same way “charges” work. That’s not a “bug” it’s just how things work.

If it is not published I wouldn’t be able to see it. DON’T PUBLISH IT!! If you do it will be harder to fix.

how do I do uses for healing? like lay on hands?
I cant figure out how to do something like that
You have to make an “action” as part of the class feature and set that up to do the thing.
