I'm currently trying to make a homebrew fighter subclass which specialises in fighting mages. One of the abilities (the 18th level one), I wanted to give the fighter a choice of any levelled spell from the wizard spell list (up to 5th level) and have it always upcast to 5th level if it's a lower level spell. How do I go about giving them the option to choose a spell?
Under the class feature, go to Spells, Add A Spell and leave most of the options blank. The ones you want to fill in will be:
Spell Class: Add Wizard
Cast at Level: Set to 5
Some you might optionally fill out:
Spell Levels: If you're seeing more spells than you expect, you may want to set this to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. The cast at option should filter anything higher or that can't be up-levelled, but I've had to set specific levels before as well.
Attack Type: If you specifically want attack spells, set the type(s) here.
Ability Score: If this sub-class can't normally cast spells, set this to their spellcasting ability.
Number of Uses: Set to the number of times they can cast the spell, you may alternatively use Uses by Ability Modifier to make it based on an ability score, and you probably also want to set Reset Type to short or long rest to reset the number of uses.
Counts as Known Spell: You probably want to set this to No if this is a bonus spell.
Always Prepared: Probably want this set to Yes so it's a spell that's always readied.
Consumes Spell Slot: Set this to No if you're using Number of Uses.
Basically to understand what's going on here, if you don't specify an exact spell for an entry in the Spells section then it will become a player choice automatically, with the top two rows of options being used to narrow down the selection, while the rest control how the chosen spell operates.
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.

You don’t actually need attack type, the Player can pick any spell. And Always Prepared is also unnecessary since they will be a “known” type caster since it only works that way for fighters. Save yourself the extra steps.

As part of that class feature, you need to do this:
Add Spell
*Uses by Ability Modifier: [Ability] (for number of uses by ability modifier per rest)
Re-save entire subclass.
