Is there any way to give a magic item a resource die rather than simple charges? Like (purely hypothetical), a wand that can shoot a single magic-missile-like blast (1d4+1). But the wand also has three d6 dice associated with it, and you must roll at least one die when using it, with the result added to the damage. You can roll all three, or just two, but at least one. When you've used all the dice, the wand can't shoot any more missiles, and it gets its dice back at dawn the next day. Or maybe it gets up to half, or something.
So instead of a number of charges, you get a number of dice. Is this making sense?
You would still use “charges” to represent it and just put the bit about the dice in as a description thing. A “custom action” can then be added to the character sheet to represent that, and provide something for the Digital Dice Roller to key off of.
They are planning on adding “actions” to magic items. What that would do is allow for “limited uses” like class features have, and “attack actions” as separate from, say, a normal attack with a Magic weapon. That would probably suit your needs better than the current system, we just have to wait for it to be updated by the Devs, and there is absolutely no ETA on that.
Ok, I'll take a look at how "custom actions" work. I don't have a lot of experience with that but I suppose now's the time to learn!
Thanks!
No problemo. Simply go to the “Actions” tab of the character sheet and hit “create custom” (or whatever it says) and you can set exactly what you seem to be proposing. You’re gonna have to roll the dice separately because it won’t combine them, but that’s not the worst thing in the world.
Ok, so what I ended up doing is making a custom spell to define the properties of the effect of the item -- action type, range, duration, etc. Then I added the spell to my custom magic item and gave the magic item a charge that resets after a long rest. The resource die is just part of the item's description. The spell is showing up under the character's spellcasting tab, and when I cast the spell it consumes the charge. This is awesome!
The only issue I see, and it's not a big problem, is that I set the charge to reset after completing a long rest, but triggering a long rest on the PC sheet doesn't reset the charge automatically like it does with other things. I have to go into the equipment tab and manually deselect the charge button there. It's not the end of the world but it seems like it should do that as part of taking the rest?
Technically there are no magic items with charges that refresh on any rest, they are all at “Dawn” or they have uses that recharge on a long rest but DDB just coded them using charges even though technically they aren’t.
Also, a lot of Magic Items refresh a random number of charges, and the character sheet has no way of generating that random number since a lot of those refresh “d3 charges” and since D&D does not officially use a “d3” the Devs are still trying to figure that out (instead of just adding a d3 since it wouldn’t be “official” 🙄).
All of that culminates into charges not automatically resetting when the PC takes a rest.
For my next trick, I'd like to have two separate items share charges (like a paired set of something), but I suspect that's well beyond what DDB is set up to handle...

Depends on the thing. You would have to make a single item to represent the pair.
Oh, true, I could do that. I'd like it to be more modular, like if a PC only had one of the pair. But I guess it's just a bunch of homebrew items customized to handle that. So, Item A and Item B as separate items, and then Item AB to represent the PC having both.

Fair enough, I can live with this as it is.
