I created a homebrew item that is a staff that is to be completed by the addition of certain gems. It adds 1 to the wielder's AC and is also meant to act as a modified ring of spell storing, only allowing 3 spells at first, instead of five. I am having trouble getting the item built the right way. I added 3 charges to it and indicated in the description that they were consumable. Is there any way that I can show what spells are cast into the staff and have them available/consumed from it?
Instead, why don’t you make a magic item using the ring of spell storing as as the template and then just change it to a staff, reduce the charges and add the AC bonus.
Thanks for the tip. I had tried to do that but for some reason it would not let me change it from a ring to a staff. Tried again and it worked this time. What I don't see is how you indicate that you have dumped X spells into the item so that you can cast them from the item and not have them decrement your other spells. Am I missing something?
I’m not entirely sure what you mean. It will work the exact same way the regular Ring works. That doesn’t actually hold any specific spells in it either.
Thanks, I wanted to verify that it did not. Seems like it would allow you to cast a spell into the ring and have your character sheet reflect that. I played with using the RoSS as a template but since it didn't do anything different, I just added 3 charges to the original staff. Seems to have had the same effect.
Most people just write it in the “notes” section by customizing the item on their character sheets. Because the spells can change on a regular basis, and because it can hold spells from every class, and because those charges could get divided up multiple different ways every day (5 1st-level spells one day, 2 1st-level spells and a 3rd-level, 1 1st-level spell 5 times, 1 5th-level spell), and that’s just the first week on the job with many other possible permutations. That would be possible with the current level of programming.
That is what i will have them do. But it seems to me that if I am the spell caster and am using the RoSS, I could have an option to cast a spell into it and indicate how many spell slots I used, then cast from it.
But overall I love the tool, so if this is my biggest issue, life is pretty good!

All help is appreciated.
