Dammit. I was really hoping there was a way to change the DMG Die on a legendary whip I'm making. Whips only do a d4, which is just so.... So small, so I'm trying to bump it up to a d8. Its supposed to be a legendary weapon that a character is searching for so I want it to feel impactful.
There are going to be other features added to it as well, but the fact that something as simple as "what dice do I use to roll dmg" can't be changed is pretty silly. I don't want to have to use a longsword as that will show up in the weapon description, otherwise I'd stick with that (I've tried 15 separate times now...). It also doesn't appear to be letting me change range or magic bonuses properly either, but always possible that I'm just stupid.

Can't help you on the magic bonuses because that's either pretty strait forward or overly complicated and you didn't put what those bonuses might be.
Range can't be changed. Limitation of the system.
I don't know what to tell you about not wanting to see the wrong weapon's blurb in the item description. It's another vestige limitation of the system from when they built the backend processing from when WOTC had a lot of restrictions built into their agreement with dndbeyond. From what I understand, WOTC didn't even want them to allow for homebrew and to not enable public access to the homebrew tools at all. Now we're at the point where we're limited by business restrictions from 6, 7+ years ago. Now the current owners, WOTC, do not want to spend the resources to to rebuild the entire system from the ground up.
If you want work arounds with these limitations, that's why we're all here in these forums. I don't know how to help you if you say "I don't want this...", but I can try and help as best I can on things you do want.
By now you may have received an answer to this question by someone. If not, I believe that in this case you can either delete the modifier you made and add in the following information or select edit said modifier.
Once editing, select modifier type and scroll down until you find Replace Damage Type. Then select necrotic in the modifier subtype, and then set the dice amount to what you need. Also make sure you select proficiency bonus under the additional bonus type, and it should be good to go as 1d8+ prof. And as always test to make sure.
currently trying to make a homebrew greatsword do 3d10 slashing damage do you know how i can do that?

No base weapon has its damage dice as 3d10.
The only way to do this would be to use the laser rifle as your base weapon. Add or ignore the all the weapon properties you need AND you must add the weapon property versatile. You'll need a note in the description that the correct damage button is the smaller, versatile, damage button of 3d10.
Then why do those fields exist under the "Modifier" section?
Because they use the same screens and drop downs in multiple places in the homebrew tool just some of their functionality is either not applicable, disabled, or set up correctly. Considering the direction WotC is going, I find it very doubtful it will ever be improved.
Direction...? Do I even wanna know? I've never been a fan of Buzzards of the Coast, but when I started using this app, I thought, "Finally! They got something right!" It just sucks to find out the pipes are leaking and the plummer has been let go.

My suggestion:
Plus there is nothing stopping you from adding your own blurb at the bottom of your description text reading:
How to: Replace DEX in AC | Jump & Suffocation stats | Spell & class effect buff system | Wild Shape effect system | Tool Proficiencies as Custom Skills | Spells at higher levels explained | Superior Fighting/Martial Adept Fix | Snippet Codes Explored - Subclasses | Snippet Math Theory | Homebrew Weapons Explained
My: FEATS | MAGIC ITEMS | MONSTERS | SUBCLASSES Artificer Specialist: Weaveblade
