Sirithal casts Light on his staff again, making sure that Heidi and the mouselings can see where they’re going. ‘Ice spiders...’ he says to Blackbur and Hurdrak in his harsh whisper ‘There is little that I can do against them...’
He heads deeper into the tunnels with the group, leaving the shrike for the spiders to feast upon...
The spiderlings continue to stream around the party, toward the cavelet in the back of the shelter, leading downward to where Dixie awaits. They shy away from the fire, where the torches are being lit, and seem content with going around the members of the patrol, for now.
Seeing the party retreat deeper into its lair, the Spider rears back up and pounces upon its attacker. Sinking its fangs into Hurdrak, it delivers a vicious bite.

Hurdrak rears out in pain. Con save 11. He then wiggles his arm free and retreats back with the others. At least that's what he thinks he does in his unconcious state. In reality he has collapsed to the ground a heap.
“What’s happening is we’re making a controlled retreat so we can fight back. When the tunnel thins, someone get up here next to me and strike at the spiders. I’ll protect you. Folks in the back, help how you can.” Blackbur‘s voice is slow and calm. Only the more martial might recognize that it’s the sound of fear in a trained member of the Mouse Guard.

A brief scuffle between the clashing parties, followed by sound of rapid footsteps distracts Dixie for a moment. The presence of crawling spiderlings and unnerving existence of a mammalian creature are forgotten briefly. Is Hurdrak hurt? Alas! There aren't any goodberries inside her backpack, not even some evocation of Healing Words! Dixie attempts to see what's happening outside under the faint light of burning torch, turning her back at the darkness when the smoke causes difficulty in breathing.
Mistral will call out a healing word, restoring some measure of vitality to Hurdrak. He will also cause a thorn whip to strike out at the arachnid matriarch, hoping to pull it off their companion.

The flaming orb strikes the large spider, who is immediately engulfed in flames, shriveling up into itself as it is consumed. The Chwingas, nowhere to be seen during the fierce melee, reemerge from the stone walls. Hurdrak and the shrike, victims of the creature’s vicious bite, lie envenomed upon the floor of the shelter cave.
The spiderlings continue to stream past and around the party, unless hindered. Scrabbling along the walls, they pass Dixie in the tunnel, and continue on to what is presumably the spider’s lair. They can be heard chittering away in their own language, no doubt recounting the fate of their mother, when they rejoin their crechemates.
Edging just a bit closer, Dixie is able to better translate the muffled attempts at communication. “Mmhellp.. mhellpmera-it..” And she thinks she spies a wisp of web ahead, just before the passage leading away bends out of sight.
Sirithal goes to help grab Hurdrak. ‘Help me with Hurdrak, and leave the Shrike, Blackbur. I don’t trust it...’ he whispers ‘We don’t want it knowing where we live.’

Another path? Her eyes twinkling with curiosity, Dixie rushes back into the place where her teammates are currently staying. After a quick glance at the web, she raises her torch and peeps through the narrow space. "Folks! There's another passage in the cavelet but a curtain of web covers the entrance", she exclaims at the party and adds, "Can you guys pull me out of this constriction? I need to check out the predator spider's remains."
While the spiderlings have thus far posed no real threat, Dixie finds herself in a predicament, stuck between the two groups. And literally stuck in the constriction, preventing the ones that were with their mother from retreating past her, to their lair. The chittering ahead grows louder as the spiderlings scrabble closer; she also hears the spiderlings from the lair approach closer, emboldened by the vulnerable position the lone rabbit finds herself in...
”Mmwookout!” The muffled voice from the lair behind her warns, as Dixie calls out ahead for help.
But she is not alone! Luckily, her mates hear her, and can guess at least part of the peril she is in...
Blackbur pulls Dixie loose from the webbing. “Careful, longears. This place is quite horrible. Get your weapon out and stay with me, we have to clear out any other dangers.”
“Sirithal you still have those torches? Let’s burn this webbing out.”
Most of the spiderlings have already streamed past the patrol, down into the cavelet in the back of the shelter entrance chamber. With the rabbit no longer blocking their egress, they pour past the constriction and around the web-shrouded curve, presumably into their lair.
Once the way is clear, the spiderlings feasting upon the shrike, and those engaged in the matriphagic consumption of their mother, quickly follow the others, scurrying clear of the torches as best they can. Dixie notes that while the fallen mature spider possesses spinnerets for spinning webs, the retreating spiderlings do not. At least there will be no new webs to contend with, beyond those which are already there, if the patrol determines to raid the lair.
Healer Heidi tends to Hurdrak, but is unable to revive him, as yet. ”He is stable, but the venom will take a short while to work through his system. And his system is the best able to cope with it. Took one for the team, he did. That bite would like to have killed one of us!”
“I’ve done what I can. He could return to us in a few moments, or a few hours. I confess this is my first patient of this nature, and the anatomy is a bit foreign. I have given herbs that should help neutralize the venom, and speed its passage through his system. I will wait with him here, with my mouselings. Nirvel!! Get over here, ye menace, leave the shrike alone! Tis dead, or shall be, soon ‘nough.”
