Zenodor passes this on to the party. "This all seems very strange. All the signs are there, but the plants are nowhere to be seen. Could they have some new trick up their sleeves?"
(Just out of interest: How dense is the forest further away from the centre, and how flammable? Hypothetically, could we set fire to the trees in the chasm? Could we start numerous small fires? If the chasm did catch fire, would the fire be contained there by natural gaps in the forest and/or rocks, or is the whole island one massive forest so that a forest fire might engulf the whole island?)
“If these plants are telepathically linked, they may be expecting us. Perhaps they abandoned their nest here, trapped it, and moved elsewhere, or perhaps they are in hiding nearby, waiting to ambush us,” muses Randall, “So we know what kinds of tracks they make so that we could follow their movements of they have left the chasm?”
Randall starts to look for tracks along the outside of the chasm, not trusting the unnatural silence below. He keeps an eye out for any other natural hazards, too, thinking the Purplewraiths may have something particularly nasty awaiting them.

Zenodor: "If the nest is actually abandoned, we must try to find where they have gone. But we should be exceedingly cautious here. I believe that plants are by their nature not migratory and would be unlikely to move far, and so I fear that they have not gone but simply prepared a much more elaborate ambush."
Then after asking his question Tempe looks downwards(Doh!) "I have a spell that can find plants. But I must wait till I can renew my choices and prepare it."
Randall's keen eyes don't find any signs of the Purplewraths egress, but do find one set of small delicate footprints leading into the ravine.
When alerted to this by Randall, Zenodor does a quick scout around the perimeter and doesn't find any signs of the footprints leaving.
(The ravine is not a straight drop-off but slopes down like a hill until you get to the bottom. The bottom is about 100 feet long and is only 15 feet wide at each end but swells near the centre to about 40 feet wide, like a large oval of sorts. The vegetation is thickest in the ravine and thus fires will spread quite quickly here, but will also spread throughout the rest of the forest at a normal pace. Except for the beaches, which are wide or long in places, and some rocky outcroppings at the north and east sides, the rest of the island is forest (just under 80% if looking down from above.))

OOC. The small delicate footprints: Do we have any more insight about it. Can Randall tell us what they could be? I.e. are they from a quadruped, biped? Are they hoof, feet or shoe marks?
Zenodor: "It seems rather odd. This should be their last nest. A single track goes in, nothing goes out. It could of course just be something or someone who strayed in and was killed in the ambush. Perhaps the same fate awaits us if we are not careful. I would propose we set camp somewhere safe where we cannot easily be ambushed and allow everyone to prepare, including giving Tempe a chance to prepare the specific spells required to track these plants" (i.e. let's find a safe rocky non-planty place where we won't be ambushed to rest and let T prepare Locate Plants.)

The footprints are humanoid, and some sort of soft soled shoe or slipper.
Irraxan tracks the footprints past a 2 to 3 foot diameter hole about 5 feet deep, a little later past a 2nd, similar hole, and finally to a 3rd such hole. As he continued following the tracks, they were joined at the 1st hole by very large plant tracks, and again at the 2nd hole, but all tracks just end at the 3rd hole. Whoever went in was followed from the 1st hole to the 2nd by a large plant, and then from the 2nd hole to the 3rd by two large plants. Then at the 3rd hole something happened and all the tracks end, they don't go anywhere else after that.

Sounds to me like maybe someone who could be planting them? E.g. A human plants and nurtures them; he/she collected the first, then the second, then at the third something happened or they did something.
Perhaps the plants' gardener/master at that point used some magic trick to make them disappear? Teleport? Fly? Invisibility? That would explain why we can't find them and why there are no tracks
A thought occurs to Randall. It is not a pleasant one…
”What if the hole is where one of the plants was buried, perfectly camouflaged, as the humanoid went past it. After it passed, the plant got up and followed it, leaving a hole. This happened a second time, ending with two plants following the unsuspecting humanoid and two holes left where they were hiding. Then they ambushed the humanoid at a third plant location, and killed it, re-burying themselves and setting up the camouflage once more,” suggests Randall.
