Eve very deliberately wanders around to the side of the guard while all this is going on. Maybe 15 or 20 ft away from them, but just off to the side, just out of their peripheral vision if possible. She will then wait until the guard is engaged with Maudath or the Professor in the discussion.
At that point, Eve would hold her crystal necklace and cast suggestion on the guard((WIS save DC14)) and say, “HEY YOU THERE!!… For the rest of the day, I would strongly suggest that you cooperate with us, and answer all of our questions truthfully, to the best of your ability… You understand?…”.
She leans in a bit, squinting thoughtfully at the guard, and tilting her head to the side a little, to see in the spell has taken hold. Her tail flicks this way and that as she waits for a response…

He slowly turns his head towards you Eve and gives you a slight smile. "No need for that dear"
He leads you all thru the portcullis and into a snowy courtyard. Footprints in the snow lead to various doors along this courtyard’s perimeter, including a tall double door to the keep, with its unwelcoming row of arrow slits and barred windows on the upper floor. To the east of the double door is a small, single-story building with a slanted, snow-covered roof. West of the double door are two unused merchant stalls with torn canopies. Tucked under some icy stairs in the northwest corner is a slender wooden hut with a crescent moon carved into its flimsy door.
Eve gulps and swallows hard, eyes wide. She shrinks into the background a little for the next few minutes…
She also whistles and calls down Ipkiss (in his visible raven form), to sit on her shoulder. Hoping maybe to just pull off ‘the local crazy lady’ act, and let that all blow over!
"Is this the town speaker's policy, or something you take on yourself? Eve whispers sidelong to Maudath, out of earshot, “Err… it’s new!! Ipkiss has been showing me some new tricks!!…”.
”I dooon’t think I’ve got that one quite right just yet!… when it works, I could theoretically get anyone to do… we’ll almost anything!..”.
”Not hurt themselves, it has to be reasonable… And it works better on the… feeble minded…”. Eve looks, somewhat impressed, over to the surprisingly strong minded guard. ‘Maybe there’s something to them?!’ she thinks.
"I believe there is someone here named Huarwar, a recent addition to our group. And I am afraid that the speaker is too ill to talk with but you may take up any such discussion with Kadroth. He will certainly wish to speak with you."
He stops about 2/3 of the way to the main building "You may proceed thru these doors there will be 2 escorts that will take you where you need to go" and with that he turns and goes back to the portcullis.
The large double doors are currently closed. You can hear barking coming from the small building that rests to the east of the doors. Each of the 4 guard towers have entrances to them in the courtyard, as well as steps leading to the upper battlements between them.
Maudath stops in front of the gatekeeper before he heads back to the portcullis. He looks over at the Professor and then back to the gatekeeper.
"All the hidden talk didn't get us anywhere," Maudath says as he looks down on the man. "The inn you sent us too. Deserted, except for a group of gray dwarves who tried to kill us. Know anything about that?"

"Exult thine self small brain, the poor guy just probably did a welcoming ritual of sending people to their deaths" Ryhunis said while putting her arm around Maudath, then she quickly sprang out of that position and said to the man at the gatekeeper "My my!You will send us their families next time? Looking up at the goliath, seemingly unfazed "My friend, you seem unharmed. I am afraid I must insist you inquire upon those things to Kadroth. I am mearly the one who answers the door"
He seems curious at your actions Ryhunis but you dont get anything beyond that.
Iris steps up and puts her hand on your arm Maudath. "Perhaps we should save the questions for this Kadroth" as she draws your attention to about a half dozen or so arrows that seem to have extended from the tiny windows in the surrounding towers.
Maudath's nostrils flare and his jaw sets in a hard line at the response from the gatekeeper, but the tension in his muscles ease when Iris rests a hand on his arm.
"Aye," he says, bringing a smile back to his face. "But this Kadroth better have some actual answers."
He continues with the others and pushes open the double doors to the main building and steps inside, looking for the escort that was mentioned.
"We're here to have a chat with your big man," Maudath says. "This Kadroth."
Eve glances surreptitiously around at all the arrow-slits, and at all the bows trained on Big M. ((I don’t suppose any or all of them have shutters do they? Just asking for a friend! ;-) - Eve’s thaumaturgy is tingling and hasn’t been used to slam anything closed in a long time!)) The thought fades though, along with the whine of the Professor’s capacitors, but she checks for shutters nonetheless.
She gets Ipkiss to flutter off as a raven for a few seconds, out of view, and come back in his invisible devil form, and hide invisibly on her shoulder again.
(The windows are just arrow slits in the wall, no shutters)
He pauses for a sec then "Kadroth has done well leading us" he then continues on his way
Entering thru the doors you find a once-grand hall that is dimly lit by chandeliers that are missing most of their candles. Three long tables in the center of the hall are littered with dirty dishes, which a young tiefling servant is slowly collecting.
A stone staircase ascends to a pair of twenty-foot-high balconies that hug the walls. On the north landing, directly across from the main entrance, hangs a banner depicting the town’s heraldry: a stone watchtower on a dark blue field, with a horizontal red fish facing to the right under the tower.
She looks up at you for a moment before quickly turning back to her work.
Maudath walks into the center of the hall, looking around at the chandeliers and wall hangings.
"Even my brother would skip over this place," Maudath says to himself. Then he approaches the servant. "Are you our escort? We're looking for Kadroth."
The young trifling girl looks up with wide eyes at the giant man standing over her. She begins to tremble a bit at the mention of Kadroth. "Nn..n..noo. H..he...hes." Professor you can see she is incredibly frightened at the mere mention of Kadroth.
Just then 2 figures in black cloaks walk into the room. "Back to work girl. We are here to escort you." They lower their hoods and you see a short haired humanoid, probably half elven, and a ash skinned humanoid whose red hair seems to flicker like flame. "Kadroth is occupied so we've been asked to bring you to Hethyl. She is most eager to speak with you as well. Please follow us." They both turn and begin to move up the large central staircase in the room.
((Sorry, was intending that insight to follow up the guard saying Kadroth has done well leading them, but since I didn't specify, I'll take what I've got.))

Maudath follows after the two figures in the black cloaks.
"So your big man, this Kadroth, he must be a real gent," Maudath says, looking back over his shoulder at the servant. "Set himself up in charge then has he?"
He continues up the staircase after them.
"My mom always says that how someone treats their employees says a lot about them. Bet he gives the pair of you big pats on the back all the time."

Maudath moves over and matches his step with Eve.
"So," he begins with a big smile on his face. "Ever used that on me?"
He looks around at the courtyard as they walk across it.
"You have a boy from Bremen living here?" Maudath asks the gatekeeper. "Huarwar or something like that? Came with some fancy knights."
