While she’s making a spectacle of herself on the table, calling for info, Eve leans down to the professor and confides in him a concern, out of the side of her mouth ((just loud enough for the party to hear and not the dwarfs or the rest of the room))… “You know what? I’m not looking forward to being out in the white snow, in the perpetual dark, looking for a white creature, that can smell us from a mile away. There must be something that can tip the scales in our favour??“.
Then back to the room, she claps her hands, once, twice, three times, “Come on people!! Yetis??… Any natural predators? Any weaknesses we can exploit?”. (Eve finds that she seems to exude an unlikely innocence and charm that people find endearing. She can often get away with things, like this, that might otherwise earn someone a fist in the chops to anyone else!)
Maudath looks around at the commotion being created by Eve and Ryhunis and starts to laugh.
"I imagine they've the same weakness as most creatures. They bleed when you stick them with something pointy," Maudath says to Eve. "But the professor is right. We're not hunting yetis. We're just grabbing some iron. I'm sure that yeti is long gone by now. What would it want with a load of hard rocks anyway? Worst case, stick close and run fast. You don't need to be faster than the yeti, just faster than the slowest one of us."
He nods over at Iris.
"Yeah. Too late now to go unless we want to get lost in the dark," he says as he signals to the bar for more ale. "And besides, as my dad always says, never pass up on a chance at good food, good drink, and a good pipe. You never know when you'll get your next one and you never know when you're having your last one."
As you stand up and shout to the room all eyes turn to you Eve. You hear from the back "Ive killed a Yeti!" Then another person speaks up "Shut it Chad! You've never even seen a Yeti!" A round of laughter and back and forth begins and grows heated fairly quick. As the two men begin to fight you see Scramsax laughing along as he goes to break it up. Beyond that no one else seems to speak up.
Hruna chuckling at the fight that broke out turns back to you all and answers the Prof. "Honestly we could care less about the Yeti, we just need the iron. I don't think the sled was damaged but we quickly ran for our lives so what happened afterwards who knows."
(As for light and dark you all would remember it is dark almost all the time with the exception of when Auril casts her spell at midnight and the aurora that happens because of the spell and during the hours of 10AM AND 2PM when you have a faint light. Any other time it is full dark)
Eve climbs down from the table, laughing at the fight she started from across the room. “Oh dear! Ha!… Well it was worth a shot!… You’re probably right. Yeti probably… uhem… ‘wanted a meal’…”, she says quietly so the other dwarfs don’t hear, “…rather than the iron!… … Chances are it’s still there just where they left it”.
Then to the dwarfs, “All that iron… We’ll need horses? Or dogs??”.
((OOC: let’s maybe aim to arrive around 10am, at the site of the yeti ambush then, to get the best light? What was it? Maybe just over an hour away? Leave town by 9am?))
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
((OOC: I thought it was a bit further than that. Either way getting there at 10am seems good.))
Iris sits back quietly and watches the back-and-forth between her friends and the dwarves as she finishes her stew. Her eyes periodically flick to the fight that broke out to make sure nothing beyond Scramsax's intervention will be necessary. She also can't help but wonder what's going on with the youngest dwarf and tries to discern anything she can about what has him so nervous.
Watching the younger dwarf he seems a bit on edge and nervously keeps looking up towards the ceiling as if expecting to see something He will look across the room and back periodically. You can't intuit anything more beyond that.
"So, it's settled, then?" Iris asks the rest of the group once it seems like the questioning has tapered off. "We spend the night preparing and gathering supplies, then meet at the Professor's tomorrow morning to set off by 8?"
"I think I'll spend the night filling this and sleeping," he says but his eyes drift towards the fight on the other side of the tavern. "Unless of course some other entertainment becomes an option."
He looks at the dwarves and then down at his own hands.
"If a pair of dwarves could pull the sled, I should have no problem," Maudath says matter of factly.
He hums to himself while he watches the fight, then he turns back to the group.
"Anyone know if it's been snowing up that way towards the Cairn? On my way down here from Lonelywood I saw a big fella wearing these snow-walking shoes. Where I sank down with each step, he skipped along up on top of the snow. Maybe we find some of those before we leave tomorrow."
At hearing Maudath talk of getting snowshoes Korux speaks up for the first time. "I ave some extra sets ya can ave" his voice is very unsettling with the strange airflow caused by his lack of a nose. He opens his bag and pulls out 5 sets of snowshoes, then looking at Ryhunis for a moment puts one set back in.
The fight, if you could call it that, has since died down with the intervention of Scramsax. The men are drinking and singing together now.
Stopping at your table upon hearing you talk of heading somewhere in the morning Scramsax speaks up "Ive got plenty of rooms available if you want to stay here."
Eve looks around the tavern, happy with her little seeds of chaos causing a fight. She thinks to herself that a tiny someone she knows would have quite enjoyed all of that!
She gladly accepts the snowshoes, and says, “So we have a reasonably early start in the morning… Is there anything else we need to organise, or should we call it a night?”.
She looks across to Maudath, “You’re welcome to crash on my mum’s floor downstairs again. She doesn’t like guests upstairs, as you know… … I can set the fire?… … Or would you prefer a bed and a room here?“.
((Maudath and the professor, who know Eve better than most, have never seen or met Eve’s mum. And if allowed in the house are not let upstairs))
"Thank you, little one," Maudath says. "But there are a few coins left in my pocket and I think I might take another helping of stew and ale, and take a bed here tonight. As comfortable as your mum's floor is, it could be awhile before I get the comfort of a real bed again."
He looks over at Scramsax.
"Assuming of course this one doesn't try and give me the dwarf-rate for a battered old mattress," Maudath says to Scramsax with another big smile on his face.
Eve smiles at Maudath, “I thought as much… Ha! Well, don’t drink ‘too’ much!”, she says with a… not really a wink… but a really big blink, that screws her whole face and nose up, with a cheesy grin.
She turns to Iris, and stuffing both her hands firmly behind her back, and backing away step by step, she says, “It was really nice to finally, properly, see you, and to meet you, and to see you, finally, nicely, thank you… …”. She’s grabbing her coat on, and her boots, and backing away.
And to the professor and Ryhunis, she says, “8 a.m., at yours! See you there!!…”.
Meanwhile at Eve’s mum’s house… ((a bit meta… for flavour etc))…
When Eve leaves the tavern, she makes her way back to her mum’s house a few blocks away. She takes a circuitous route and checks over her shoulder before going in.
Once inside, she calls upstairs, “Mum!!… I’m home!!…”. ((no answer)). “I’m out early tomorrow so I’m heading to bed!!… I’m just getting a drink!!”. ((no answer)). She takes a small cup of water up to bed with her.
Once she’s safely inside her room, she closes the door behind her. She pulls the small rug by the bed to one side, takes a stick of chalk from her pack, and starts drawing on the floor. She draws a small circle inside a larger circle, but off-centre. Then, half in and half out of the little circle, she draws her symbol for Ipkiss. The whole thing is only a little bigger than a dinner plate.
She doesn’t know any summoning circles, but it makes her feel a little better when a little part of her room is set aside, in case anyone should want to visit. She knows nothing of the magics required, but she’s just made up her own ritual, that she hopes makes it a little easier for them to find her.
She pricks her thumb and lets one drop of blood fall onto the symbol. And she lights a candle and sets it down neatly too. Pleased with her work, she changes ready for bed.
She lays on her bed watching the flame make shadows across her design. Sometimes she sees something, sometimes not. She’s felt their presence already today, so she’s happy they’re near by, and haven’t forgotten her.
She watches the flame a little longer, feeling sleepy. And eventually she’ll fall asleep…
"You're... welcome?" Iris calls after Eve, thoroughly confused, but by that point she might be too far away to hear. Turning back to the others and blinking a few times, she comments to nobody in particular, "She seemed sweet." Focusing her attention on Maudath now, she asks, "You said 'sister' earlier? She's not..."She trails off, leaving the question open-ended.
While she’s making a spectacle of herself on the table, calling for info, Eve leans down to the professor and confides in him a concern, out of the side of her mouth ((just loud enough for the party to hear and not the dwarfs or the rest of the room))… “You know what?
