The Professor and Travis head back toward the pen and would continue to see kobolds traveling about, mercenaries sharpening their weapons, and cultists wearing similar, although sometimes different gear. (As an OOC update, I am okay with them closing in on the range of Inglenook’s cantrip once Inglenook sends the message)
As Kiari and the others ready for their plan, 7 kobolds and 2 cultists approach the pen “They must be here to select workers for the next work detail!” whispers Leosin.
Kirari tries to present as strong but a little intimidated by the guards as they approach, 'whispering' to the 'not' Leosin, "I hope they don't pick me for this work detail you talk about. I don't think I could take another beating like that one gave me earlier." The half-orc rubs a non-injured side of her body as she says this.
Of course, meant to be overheard by the approaching group.
As the kobolds and cultists approach, Cale drapes his arm around Kelvini and says (loud enough for them to hear): "Well Leo, it looks like we're off to work again"
The cultists seem busy with giving orders to the kobolds but nod thoughtfully hearing Kiari’s comments.
Kelvini nods at Cale and puts his head down to try and be convincing. The kobolds eye the prisoners and then circle the pen to take a look at their prospective charges. The prisoners all become noticeably tense and try their best not to make eye contact.
Travis and Thaddeus, on their way back, would be able to see the kobolds circling the pen and the cultists talking near the gate of the fence
Seeing commotion around the pen, the professor nudges Travis and indicates the pen with a head gesture. “We better see what’s going on.” He approaches the gate where the cultists are gathered to try and catch the conversation before jumping in.
Kirari stoops a little and moves to blend herself into the crowd, looking very much like a student trying to avoid the eyes of her teacher lest she be called on.
The lead cultist says loudly, “Time to earn your keep in service of our dark queen! We need firewood for the watch fires tonight.” He points to Kiari and goes, “You must be new, half-orc; time to put some work in.” The cultist sneers while saying, “any other volunteers?” The kobolds each snicker at the unease in the pen.
Inglenook, sends a message to Travis and The Professor as he sees them come within a hundred feet or so of the pen.
Message cantrip - "We're trying to all get on work detail if we can. It may be a good chance to get out of here together. Can you use your new status to join us as well? Inglenook."
You point your finger toward a creature within range and whisper a message. The target (and only the target) hears the message and can reply in a whisper that only you can hear. You can cast this spell through solid objects if you are familiar with the target and know it is beyond the barrier. Magical silence, 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood blocks the spell. The spell doesn't have to follow a straight line and can travel freely around corners or through openings.
Inglenook then steps forward with the others. "I'd be happy to collect some firewood. Any excuse to get out of this pen and stretch my little legs!"
Kirari stands close waiting for the work detail to depart and takes a look at the cultists and kobolds to try to see if either is wearing any of the little necklaces.
Travis leans closer to the professor and says quietly. "I will try to join the detail keeping an eye on the firewood gatherers. Maybe you should as well? You do have a much more convincing way of speaking..."
The Kobold flashes an enraged look at Cale. "You!" says the lead Cultist, "Let's see how clever you are after a full night's work!" the Kobold enters the pen and pulls Kiari and Cale forward. Hearing Inglnook, the other Kobold enters the pen to grab and pull him out with the others. Leosin raises his hand and says, "For the sake of the others, I volunteer." The Kobolds look at each other and go, "Why so eager to work?" as they shrug.
With passive perception, Kiari wouldn't be able to see if the cultists are wearing necklaces, but they each have their masks on. The leader's mask has a blue hue to the otherwise black mask.
The lead Cultist, seeing the professor and Travis approaching, says to them, "You two! We got more volunteers than normal. We need firewood and any game you may find. Take these prisoners and these Kobolds and initiates back on the plateau... Unless Mondath has you working on something?"
Kirari keeps her head down but observes the dynamics of the group, noting the blue of the leader's mask. A group larger than they're used to, nice. Looking concerned, she asks the lead cultist, "Where are you taking us? What sort of work?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
“Speak when you are spoken to, prisoner!” the cultist snaps back at Kiari. “You will work to help us bring glory to our Dark Queen Tiamat. A chill is in the air, and we need more firewood for our lodgings.” Turning to the professor, he says, “You may take this group unless Mondath has other work for you to do. In addition to these four kobolds, I’ll have the initiates find 2 kobolds for you to help keep this larger group in line”
Inglenook sees and hears the cultist talking Kirari down and draws their attention. "So does the Dark Queen Tiamat also keep you cleansed each day? Because I'll be honest she's not doing a great job." And he waves a hand in front of his face and screws his nose up.
The professor nods to the cultist. “No problem. We’ll take care of the work detail.” He pauses before continuing more conversationally. “Were you with the group that raided the town? I was assigned elsewhere and was curious how the mission went?”
Hearing Inglenook, one of the cultists shouts, “Insolence!” then turning to the professor, “be sure to watch this one, and perhaps one of the kobolds needs to drag him out of camp? Or teach him a lesson in humility?”
The lead cultist turns to Thaddeus and says, “I was here with Mondath making preparations. Greenest provided some modest trinkets, but there are still much more to be done to prepare for the return of the Dark Queen.”
The kobolds then proceed to bind Kiari’s hands first as she seems most complacent any then move to Cale, Leosin, and Inglenook. Their bindings slightly dig into their wrists and then they are connected to a much larger rope that the kobold presents to Thaddeus and Travis.

Kirari looks up with an expression of surprise, then acceptance and moves towards the cultist mumbling that she's not the only new one.
"That depends" says Cale to the kobold, "Can we unionize?"
He has a hand on Kelvini's shoulder, making it clear they are together.

The professor looks at Travis oddly “Work detail? Is that what’s going on here? He nods towards the pen”
(the message only works for one creature not both. Travis responded so he got the message)

Kirari will flinch when reprimanded and attempt to maintain her intimidated personae.
