Satisfied with his investigation, Droknin stands up, holding Mlinzi with one hand, but still trying to avert Keashirryl's gaze. Hi there! I'm a Christian musician based in Canada :)
Keashirryl recalls that the old dwarven woman from the inn last night had described a windmill south of town where a 'woodswise' woman was said to dwell.
Setting aside the problem of the Redbrands for now, the four of you climb back down the road from the ruins of Tresendar Manor and instead take a walk into the hills south of town, to find this woods-woman and see if she can shed any light on the strange happenings in and around Phandalin.
The hills are numerous here and it seems your legs are always burning from climbing up a hill, or your knees and ankles are always wobbling as you negotiate your way down the other side. Each hilltop grants a different view of the surrounding countryside: some hillss are crowned with groves of aspen or pine trees, while others have no trees at all, capped with boulders and broken rocks instead. The wind is brisk but as the sun rises higher into the sky the day does begin to warm, slightly. As the village of Phandalin recedes behind you, you spot the windmill after about one hour of walking. At first you can only spot it as you crest hills, but soon you reach a wooden sign with a plaque and a small path leading up toward the windmill. The sign reads:
Triboar Historical Preservation Society Site #004: Umbrage Hill
Umbrage Hill is so named due to two feuding dwarf clans who fought a pitched battle here in unrecorded history, and subsequently buried their fallen warriors beneath cairns atop the hill. The cause of their 'umbrage' was forgotten in modern times, and only the cairns of the dead remain.
You ascend the hill and soon begin to hear a heavy banging sound from up ahead. As you round a bend, you reach the level of the windmill. It is a three-story stone building with a heavy wooden door at ground level. On the far side of the windmill tower you can see foundations and collapsed walls where another connected building once stood.
But your attention is consumed by the monster at the base of the tower. A large creature is smashing its front paws into the wooden door of the tower. It is reddish brown in color and has leathery wings and a spiked tail. Otherwise, from what you can see its body resembles a lion or other large feline.
From a small second floor window, a woman (possibly a halfling or a gnome) is dropping pots and pans on the monster and shouting curses at it.
[At present you are 90 feet away from the monster, and neither it nor the woman in the tower have noticed your arrival.]

Droknin is not used to be a scout, but he feels that he should lead. As the group goes up and down the hills, he hides the fact that he’s breathing slightly heavier than normal. “We Leonins are natural sprinters! Very dangerous over short distances!” Says Droknin at no one in particular.
Upon reaching the windmill, Droknin does a low guttural growl, and holds Mlinzi firmly with both paws. He tries do determine what kind of creature is this monster.

Droknin, you recognize the monster as a Manticore. Manticores are large, magical monstrosities with the body of a lion, dragon-like wings, and a somewhat humanoid head. Its long tail had a cluster of deadly spikes, which the creature could launch at its foes as weapons. It had incredibly tough claws and fangs. Manticores are intelligent and capable of speech, and often work in groups or with evil creatures such as dragons or giants. They are known to eat any prey they can catch, and they have no qualms about eating other intelligent creatures.

(Hopefully that will grab the Manticore's attention.)

At Droknin's provocation, the Manticore spins around, a look of surprise on its vaguely human face. "What?!" Now that it faces you, a jagged injury on its front left shoulder is visible... it looks to have been made by large claws.
[For the moment the rest of the party remains undetected... but stealth checks will be required for anyone who wants to stay that way, now that the monster realizes it isn't alone.]
From the window above and behind the monster, an indignant voice calls out, "Hey! Who are you calling old?!" A halfling woman not more than 30 years old, with her hair tied back with a green bandana, scowls at you, before launching a copper kettle down. It clangs off the back of the Manticore which divides its attention between Droknin and the halfling before turning back to face Droknin, its spiked tail waving threateningly in the air behind it. Keashirryl skirts around, looking the scene up and down. She is certainly intimidated by the creature, but even more so by the fact that it is injured, wondering what might have caused it. She tries to move at an angle, inspecting the injury. She is particularly interested in if what could have caused it and how serious is it. (Medicine: 5 ) Nevertheless, she is trying to keep her distance as long as possible, but does not attempt to hide.
Keashirryl, the Manticore sees you approach, and shifts its attention back and forth between you and Droknin, who is much closer. It backs up a step until it has the windmill at its back. From this distance you can't learn much about the injury, but it doesn't seem to impact the movement of the creature's wing or foreleg, so it probably isn't hurt too badly.
Mud, you remain hidden from the Manticore's view for now but have a long way to travel to get behind it. [Basically, the windmill sits at the center of a little clearing on the hill. In order to remain hidden and get behind the monster, which is now looking back in the direction of you and your allies, you will need to chart a wide path around and come in from the side.]
[What actions do you take? The Manticore was not immediately aggressive toward the strange lion-man-person who snuck up behind it, but it is clearly growing agitated as more strangers appear. What happens next may push us into initiative.]
