"So for this next round, do you guys want to try hard or Normal? I think we should try hard, we could make a name for ourselves faster and the payout would be better." Kileprat says to the group.
Aino Tanssija is a slim, precocious Wood Half-Elf lass, also pretty, though far less inclined to tell stories. Paradoxically, she is a wizard that likes to wade into the thick of battles, shoulder-to-shoulder with her barbarian companion Kileprat.
"Welcome to the party, Casey. No group name and no captain... yet. Are you volunteering?" She gives Casey a lopsided but friendly grin. "I am Aino."
She thinks for a bit. "Good to be eager. I am too. From the first two rounds, I've learned that there are usually some tricks to these contests that go beyond just a straight-up fight. Keep your eyes and ears open. Have to decide now whether to go for the hard challenge or the normal one next round."
Aino is glad to see the payout is significantly higher this round. 458 gold each rather than total? That will help.
(Per post 102, she wants to buy either a Cloak of Protection for 300gp or a Rapier, +1 for 400gp. Probably the latter and then 50gp for a Potion of Healing - just want to make sure the same prices apply. Also, can she sell back her regular Rapier for half-price?)
OOC: Thanks for taking care of the annoying spammer (hopefully).
Yep no change to the prices. And sure I'll let you sell back your Rapier for 13 GP.
Practicing her forms a bit with her new Rapier, +1, Aino considers the questions posed by the others.
"Depends what you mean by underhanded tactics, Storm. As Kileprat said, a fight's a fight, but I may use my magic to weaken or control the enemy. I suspect Casey may as well. Is that underhanded? Or I may just fight toe-to-toe as we did in the last battle once we found the enemy in the fog and identified who they were. It was a changeling and they shifted to look just like Kileprat. The one thing I've seen from the first two battles is that there is always an extra challenge like that beyond the straight combat. Just be ready. I'm game for the hard version of this one, whatever it is."
Thumbtack, her owl familiar, blinks once slowly, balancing on Aino's shoulder.
"I do not feel that using magic to weaken your enemy or controlling them to fight one another would be underhanded. I heard of a fight once where one caster became invisible and stole the other caster's spellbook, and then threatened to destroy it if they did not yield. I guess that would be something I consider underhanded."
DM: Looks like everyone is leveled up and items have been bought. Please keep chatting if you like I'm working the night shift tonight so I'll kick off the fight tomorrow. Just going to describe the transition so tomorrow we can jump right in.
The party chats for a bit longer getting to know each other. Dinner is served and eventually everyone drifts off to their rooms for the night.
The next day the party meets up in the great room where a half elf is waiting. He is tall and slinder but has an aura of strength about him. He looks exactly like you would picture a half elf to be. He walks you to your holding cell at the arena while chatting.
Hello im Sorath ill be your escort form now on Reporter has been reassigned to a new story. I'm excited for your match today and you are doing the hard challenge yes? Well here is how it's going to work. You will start the fight in the air and will be fighting off flying monsters while falling to your death. Makes you wish you had wings am I right. Ha ha ha, he chuckles at his own joke while looking at storm. Well cause you took that hard challenge that gives you I'd say 5 rounds to kill your opponents. If you do it you will get a pull from the chest of Wonders. If you don't well you will get to be pulled out if the hole your body made. Ha ha ha man I'm killing it today. Questions? I won't answer anything about what your fighting can't make it easy on ya I bet your killed before The ground does the job for the birds.
"So the objective is to kill all of the flying monsters before the five rounds are up? What if they decide to not fly near us at all? I am not sure about the others but I myself cannot fly and would have no way to even get to them if they chose to stay away."
Initiative: 14
(OOC: Will there be a check to move/maneuver through the air? Or will we not know that until it starts?)
Kileprat says to the new guys... "You guys have to remember that they are in the challenge too, if they don't kill us, they die just like we do, or at least that is how I think the battles work." KIleprat ponders that a sec... "So it should be in their best interest to come at us as well, and if not.. We will figure it out or die... hahahaha Cant live forever.. Welcome to the games."
Aino calls a quick group huddle and whispers privately to the others:
"I do have a spell, Feather Fall. It can affect up to five people within 60' including myself and slow our fall so we can land safely. As long as I am not incapacitated, silenced or dead, I can cast it as a reaction to any of us falling, which I assume we will all be doing."
She pauses in thought, finger tapping her lips. "And yet, I do not think that is how we are meant to pass this challenge, so I will not use it except in last second desperation. Stay within 60' if you can but do not count on it. Let's just win the fight." Her owl, Thumbtack, lets out a little hoot of agreement.
"As for our enemies, I believe the half-elf mentioned that they can fly, so they may not have the same time limit we do..."
DM: Sorry forgot to add the Mechanics. To move you can make a Int or Dex check to soar up to your normal movement distance. The stage can affect your falling speed. How I will track it is by blocks you will start at 5 blocks of falling. Each round eats up 1 block unless something affects your speed of fall.
Yes you can make any preparation spells before the fight starts. No more then 1 as a ritual. So say 15 mins of prep is given in the reasy room.
Aino feel free to use any spell you wish the possibility of feather fall was taken into account.

Yep - I think that's exactly what Aino is saying and thinking when she says that they may not be meant to pass the challenge that way. She is wondering what the countermeasures might be and thinking maybe she'd rather not find out. Though she might be overthinking it too, 20 INT and all.
Aino does not need to cast the Find Familiar ritual again since Thumbtack is still alive. She does ritually cast Detect Magic so that for the following 10 minutes, within 30' of her, she can sense the presence of magic, including illusions (though an action is needed to find the school of magic). The round just before the challenge starts, she casts and concentrates on Flaming Sphere as an action, and starts her Bladesong as a bonus action.
Her steps become lighter, and a 5' diameter blazing ball of fire appears a small distance away, ready to slam into something.
Cass looks at her new team- feeling like she already knows them, hoping they survive this challenge. Shortly before the time is up, she turns to Strom. “Strom- I bet a cat’s nimbleness would help you soar more smoothly through the air- let me help you” with a gentle touch on the shoulder, and a purring sound from her lute, she casts enhance ability Cat’s Grace (advantage on dex checks, 1 hour- concentration spell)
Continuing with her lute, she says “there’s something about falling that makes you feel free.. the fall sposed to be a fun time… it be the stop that gets ya! I say we enjoy it- and take out as many of em as we kin!” she then plays a little tune she once heard… (part of the chorus)… “and I’m free…. Free falling”, and she smiles at each of her new companions, in turn- inspiring them to greatness. (Each gets bardic inspiration 10 minutes- can add a 1d6 to saves, checks, attack rolls etc- also can add 1d6 to a spell damage or healing).
24 on performance check in roller, for what it’s worth. :)
Strom looks to Cass appreciatively, "Thank you, you are correct, I may do well in melee combat but Ive usually done so through strength, hardiness and a lot of armor, not through any kind of grace." As Cass gives inspiration to the group Strom appears to stand up even taller which did not seem possible, "I look upon us and I have hope that if we work together we will prevail in this trial, I do not have any spells that I can cast before we enter, but if we stay close to one another it will make it easier for me to heal anyone who needs help."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The party reaches its ready room, where you make final preparations. You can hear the roar of the crowd as anther team is currently fighting.
Dan: oh What a Shame. What a Mess. So close another team kisses the arena a bit to hard. We'll folks please visit our concessions stand while we clean up for the next fight.
A Dwarf sticks his head in the room. 10 min, portal open go through. He then is off.
Everyone cast their final spells. Casey as you start your song. The roar of the crowd dies down as you hear your voice booms across the stadium. With a 24 performance your flawless and the crowd goes crazy. (You gained 92 fans)
Dan: what a performance. let's hope this next team fights as well as they sing.
A blue portal opens in the back of the room. As you step through its like the world falls out from beneath your feet.
Dan: It begins.
As you start falling you see three shadows swoop in from above, A griffin and 2 Giant Eagles.
(OOC: Sorry, didn't think of this til last night in bed. Lol)
As Casey starts to sing, Kileprat pulls a rope from her pack and wraps it around her waist, then wraps the other end around Aino. "Everyone tie off to each other, rhen we can stay close without wasting our hands to hold on."

"You and Aino know the arena better and if you feel hard is the way to go then I say yes."

Roll Initiative Please.
(Ooc cool! Is there any pre-battle prep allowed for longer duration buffs? How’s that work? I rolled an 8 in the log for initiative..)
