Out of the corner of her eye, Avaria catches movement in the water. What looks like fins breaks the surface and rolls quickly, giving the impression of a giant eel or an odd shaped dolphin. A tail slaps the surface as whatever was there disappears.
On shore, Jan and Marrin discuss Jan's dusty familiar and lack of contact. Perhaps said being is still watching and has not arrived at any trigger that would cause them to seek Jan out.
The pair notice the waves gently slapping the shore and then they spot a ship anchored out at the mouth of the cove. Above the waves, they can now hear the sound of oars.
Neither Jan nor Marrin spot anything along the shore.
Eventually they recognize Avaria's silhouette as the jolly boat approaches the shore. Not until the boat hits the sand several meters from shore do they recognize the other figure in the boat as one of the sailors who escaped Hargrove's Grotto with them: Bukril.
Bukril quickly turns around and faces the shore, gripping the oars again as he sits back down.
"One of you will need to give us a shove to get us going again," Bukril says. "Otherwise with the extra weight we're just going to sit on the bottom."
Avaria points out what she sees to Bukril and hopes it isn't going to be an issue. Once they find their cargo and Marrin and Jan hop aboard, Avaria nods to Bukril's comment and steps out, and starts to push the row boat out to sea.
Dwarrin watches at Jan out of the corner of her eye, not sure what to make of the lack of answer but is happily distracted by the jolly boat's arrival.
"Glad to see you Ava, Bukril!"
Dwarrin hops in the boat and leaves the pushing to those best able.
Avaria feels the craft resisting her push, preferring to just sit on the sandy bottom, but when she times her shove with a wave lifting up, she gets the jolly boat moving and pulls herself back over the gunwale.
Bukril spins the boat, turns himself around again, and begins rowing back to the Xanthe's Wish, a single lantern near midship helping guide the group back.
At about the same spot Avaria saw it before, Jan, Marrin and Avaria all notice a shape about the size of the shapeshifter move under the boat, an edge of a fin, or maybe a flipper just breaking the water.
Whatever it is doesn't appear to be hampering their progress in anyway.
Once back along side the ship, Bukril quickly ties off the bow and stern to the ropes hanging down, and indicates the rope ladder on the side of the ship.
Jan will waste no time scrambling aboard, once she does, from the higher vantage point of the ship's deck, she'll try to spot whatever it was that swam near the jolly boat, just to keep an eye on it.

Avaria will let Marrin and Jan head up the rope ladder first and try and keep an eye on whatever is in the water. If nothing else catches her eye, she'll head up after them.
The group plus Bigge look down into the water to see what Jan's taking an interest in.
A hint of fin and flipper splash near the jolly boat just before it's hauled up the side of the ship.
"If I'm not wrong, I'd say Merfolk," Bigge says. "Pretty close to shore though. Probably some curious kids. If we don't bother them they shouldn't bother us."
Bigge turns to the crew and begins barking orders to raise the anchor and get underway.
"Do we have a destination yet?" Bigge asks the group.
"I've still got K'oshash keeping tabs on the Mayor's manor, I'll call them back once we're a bit underway and see if there's anything to report.", Jan shares, having assumed her own face once they got on board the ship.

Ethel emerges from below decks, her inspection of the accommodations complete.
"Yes," she says to Bigge. "We aim to sail north, making for the Easting Reach." She looks at her companions and at Hammerdasher. "We can settle on a more precise destination once we have this sad business in Spandeliyon some leagues behind us."
Once the ship is underway again, she finds Geffroi. "I am curious. Your education is clearly in the antiquities and history. I haven't asked, however, to what extent you possess any understanding of the arcane. Do you suppose, for example, that if given proper instruction, you could assist with the transcription of magical spells? Or would such a thing be too far outside of your experience and capabilities?"

Bigge turns back to watch the water for a few more moments, but it looks like the merfolk have lost interest in the ship.
“Easting Reach it is,” Bigge says. He thinks for a moment “Not a single decent tavern in Sarshel. They do have a decent enough ship builder there but unless you’re looking for a new ship, it’s a bit on the dull side.”
He shouts more orders to the crew.
“Now, the Bloody Hook in Uthmere; there’s a pub worth traveling north for.” Bigge says.
Geffroi listens carefully to what Ethel is asking before answering.
“My studies and work have made me a very careful scribe. On occasion, when deep in my studies I’ve felt almost as if the words appeared by magic on the page. I’m sure that with your guidance, I could be of great assistance in the transcription of spells.”
Geffroi is clearly getting excited by the topic.
“I’ve noticed that every wizardly book I’ve had access to almost has its own language, as if each wizard has their own shorthand and notation they use to impart real power in to the words of their spells.”
This ship is soon out of the cove and the lights of Spandeliyon are but faint dots to the south. The Xanthe’s Wish makes more easterly than north as the night begins. Bigge explains that he wants to keep well clear of the Pirate Isles, especially at night.
As the ship moves through the rolling waves, most of the crew retires for the evening after eating an interesting mélange of baked goods and exceptionally spicy stew the two goblins have prepared.

Once she hears the slapping of the oars she'll start look for its source.
Jan doesn't respond, just continues looking for their ride, as well as scanning the shore for any Mayor based surprises.

"Something weird with the fish?"

In hearing it's a mermaid, Dwarrin joins Ava at the rails, equally excited.
"Never seen a merfolk!"
To the talk about destination,
"Easting Reach? So like Sarshel? Never been. Bigge?"
