[The group has a wagon of their own, right? If so, Ethel is riding up in the wagon. Sorry, but there's an off-road portion of this trip coming up and Ethel will have plenty of rough-riding opportunities later. For now, she's in the wagon.]
Thus, its reasonable her perception check is 5.

With all the light up front, though the torches threaten to blow out from the wind, and with Avaria's sharp eyes, the horses manage the road without incident.
Ethel notices little outside the wagon she chooses to ride on other than the very talkative merchant holding the reigns. He seems to be talking about nothing and everything in an effort to distract himself from the darkness to the sides of the road.
The group travels over the bumpy road for about an hour. Full darkness has descended and the moon is getting closer to setting.
As the road turns, the wind suddenly dies down.
"The road runs south for a little here," Soren calls out. "There's a ridge directly ahead that we can't see but it has the affect of sending the wind over our heads. This might be the best spot for us to set up camp."
As the wagons roll to a stop, the sound of dirt and gravel crunching under the wheels seems to echo much louder now that the wind is gone.
Suddenly the group hears shouting from the rear of the caravan, where Hammerdasher, Geffroi and Ula were.
"Bloody trees shouldn't be moving like that," Hammerdasher's voice can be heard.
Any moving back to the rear of the caravan can see, by the moonlight, and some of the light from the front of the caravan, two large shapes appear in the darkness.
About 30' from the last caravan, what appear to be two diseased trees, black ichor oozing from cracks in the bark, thorny bare branches moving despite the lack of wind, and rubbery roots trailing out behind them shuffle towards the wagons.
"I don't think those are trees," Geffroi finally sees.
Whatever they are, they look like they should be dead but instead they're clearly coming your way.

(Anyone who came back to investigate what the shouting was about would have made it there before the “trees” really stepped into view. They’re about 30’ from the last wagon and about 20’ apart. I think everyone else would be at the back of the last wagon unless they wanted to come around from a different direction)
Marrin points at a spot between the rotting pair and whistles. The sound of the whistle doesn't come from her mouth and instead explodes out from the point she indicated with thunderous volume.
DC 16 con save (half damage in save): 12
She'll turn her horse after doing this and move back 15', calling to Jan,
The explosion of sound shakes branches and flutters leaves. Marrin, not sure what an injured diseased tree might look like, estimates that one of the creatures suffered a little more than the other.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Jan nods, and concentrating for a moment, sweeps her ringed hand upward, calling out " خاک میں ملا دیا۔", a pebble rising up from the ground between the two trees, using Marrin's center point of the blast as reference. The pebble whirls and shudders before fracturing with a sharp retort that precedes a groaning rumble, the sound of a rockslide rippling the air between the trees.
CON Save, DC 15 or they take 14 thunder damage or half on success.

Avaria nods to herself after it appears that her friends have done some good damage with their area spells and it seems safe to run in with her greataxe. She had been favoring her new sword ever since getting it from the main guard on the island, but with these sickly trees... an axe just seemed right.
She runs up to whichever tree seems to be worse off than the other and swings!
Her first attack surely goes wide with an attack of 10, but the damage would have been full - 17.
Following up on the thunderclap from Marrin, Jan's explosion of noise seems to have a similar affect. The same 'tree' that appeared to lose a little more bark than the other does so again.
Avaria then charges in after the special effects show and does her best to trying hewing timber. Her first hack bounces off the tough bark but she's able to get the axe back under control and with her second swing sees a satisfying piece of bark go flying.
Hammerdasher shouts at Geffroi to get back. He pushes the scribe to get back in the last wagon, and then yells at Tas and the merchants to keep the wagons moving to get them out of harms way.
Ula on the other hand charges into action after Avaria. Not wanting to let the 'trees' surround her friend, she faces off against the other one that has faced less damage than the first.
She swings her warhammer at the 'tree' and almost at the same time, a glowing, spectral warhammer that looks almost identical appears over her head and smashes itself at the same tree. Both the physical hammer and the spiritual one make solid contact with the 'tree' and a large piece of bark goes flying.
With that, both creatures look to be in the same damaged state.
The blighted tree in front of Avaria swings a large branch at the shifter, connecting easily (25 to hit for 16 bludgeoning damage). At the same time, a thick root rises up and attempts to grapple Avaria. The root wraps tightly around her midsection (19 to hit - Avaria is Grappled - DC 15 to escape on her turn if she wants - if she's still grappled at the start of her turn, Avaria will take 8 more bludgeoning from the squeeze).
If being wrapped tightly by a big root wasn't bad enough, Avaria sees a large 'mouth' open up in the trunk of the 'tree' and large wooden 'teeth' bite down on her (27 to hit for 21 piercing).
The other tree tries the same with Ula. A large branch slams down on the cleric, causing Ula to grunt in pain. Another root reaches out and encircles Ula around the waist and hold her tight as the tree chomps down hard on her shoulder.
From the looks of Ula, one more hit like that and she'll be in serious trouble.
-----------------------------------------------
Ethel's up - both Ula and Avaria are grappled.
