"That certainly looks like a tomb," Tanis whispers "with up to four people, one each inside their stone boxes. I do not know if she is in one of them."
Are you in one of the four sarcophagi together in a room? He addresses the mental question to the telepathic voice inside their heads.
Slowly entering the room, wary for an ambush or hazards and taking care not to disturb anything, Tanis slowly makes his way around the room, searching for any clues on the floor, walls, ceilings or sarcophogi, without touching any of the latter three. As he moves into the unlit area, the ranger gradually vanishes. He tries to tell himself he did not venture into the room because he feels better in the darkness... that could not have been the reason...
Thunk goes up to the first stone box (Thunk cannot spell sarcophagus, nor even pronounce hit) and starts brushing dust off it in an attempt to see if it shows what, or who, is inside.

The voice you heard does not respond to Tanis' question.
Looking around the room you notice that the lid of each sarcophagus bears the sculpted image of a robed human figure in repose. Tanis notices that the one on the far right corner does not touch the ground, crouching down he can see that it rests on stone rollers and could be moved apart from the wall (using an action and passing a DC10 strength check).
Thunk goes up to the first stone box (Thunk cannot spell sarcophagus, nor even pronounce hit) and starts brushing dust off it in an attempt to see if it shows what, or who, is inside.
Thunk walks to the closest sarcophagus. As soon as his hand touches its lid an angry, unfettered spirit rises from it. It opens its mouth in a silent scream, causing three more like it to rise, one from each of the other stone caskets. They look angry at the intruders in the tomb and charge.
OOC: time to roll for initiative! Spectres: 13 Derendil: 17 The other escaped prisoners did not follow the group inside the tomb. Specter image in the spoiler block below.
Tanis stifles a yelp as the undead rise from the sarcophagi. Well, what did you expect scout? He can almost hear Sheriff Markham Southwell's disapproving voice. An urge to rush straight out of the room fills him, overcome by an even stronger urge to remain in the darkness, which he does.
"You may have been correct, Arokas. It appears to have been a mistake to venture down here." (Spoken in Elvish). Murmuring another Elvish word "Fara" (Hunt) softly, he marks the nearest (SE) specter with primal magic and looses two bolts from his hand crossbow at it.
Bonus Action: Tanis casts Hunter's Mark on the nearest (SE) specter. 1d6
Action: Tanis attacks the nearest (SE) specter with his hand crossbow. All attacks at advantage assuming the specter cannot see him due to Gloom Stalkers' Umbral Sight making him invisible to darkvision. Also, no disadvantage at close range for Tanis due to his Crossbow Expert feat. Two attacks on first round due to Gloom Stalkers' Dread Amusher, second one with an extra 1d8 damage.
Hand Crossbow Attack 1 - to hit: 22 Hand Crossbow Attack 1 - damage: 9 + 4 from Hunter's Mark = 13 piercing
Hand Crossbow Attack 2 - to hit: 19 (due to Dread Ambusher) Hand Crossbow Attack 2 - damage: 6 + 3 from Hunter's Mark + 1 from Dread Ambusher = 10 piercing
Movement: Tanis has 10' extra move speed on the first round of combat, also due to Dread Amusher, but remains where he is, just moving 5' SW, still in melee, hugging the darkness near the south wall. (All attacks by enemies using darkvision to see him in the darkness are at disadvantage).
"Hi!" Thunk says with startled surprise. "We came to help. Are you the head voice?" Thunk has weapons ready but isn't attacking yet because he came here to help, not attack the first thing he saw... But while Thunk is stupid, he's also one always ready to hit something. So Thunk is ready to attack the first thing that attacks him right back.
Readied Attack: Shortsword attack: 15 to hit for 10 damage
Two bolts fly through the specter next to Tanis, slowing down mid air before hitting the stone wall behind it.
The specters do not answer Thunk with words. The closest one just lunges at him trying to drain the life from the orc (to hit: 14), but fails to hit and it's hit itself in return. Another one flies next to Thunk and attacks (to hit: 23, damage: 8 necrotic). On its way to Thunk, a third specter notices Drogen and charges at the dwarf (to hit: 11) but is ineffective in its anger. The last one lashes blindly at Tanis (to hit: 16, damage: 8 necrotic).
Derendil charges at the specter that attacked Drogen and slashes at it with his claws (to hit: 22, 23, damage: 9, 9) managing to damage the undead.
Initiative order: 17 Tanis (8) 17 Thunk (8) 9 Four Specters (8, in melee with Drogen and Derendil) (in melee with Thunk and Derendil) (5, in melee with Thunk) (11, in melee with Tanis) 5 Derendil 4 Arokas 1 Drogen
The people that were hit by the specters (Tanis and Thunk) must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or have their hit point maximum reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken. This reduction lasts until the creature finishes a long rest.
Arokas curses under his breath. “Knew it was a trap. Never trust anything that seems too good.” He creates a ball of chaotic energy and hurls it at the Spectre that attacked Drogen with Chaos Bolt.
Drogen will use his BA to cast spiritual weapon targeting S2 ( to hit: 7 damage 10) then holds his holy symbol aloft and yells out. "In the name of Moradin, I command you foul creatures to flee." ( Channel Divinity: Turn Undead wisdom save dc 13)
Arokas' magical bolt destroy the specter on hit. Making space for Drogen to cast without distraction. The dwarf's spiritual hammer does not hit the undead, but the censoring prayer turns two of them.
Initiative order: 17 Tanis (8) 17 Thunk (8) 9 Three Specters (24) (in melee with Thunk and Derendil) (5, turned, in melee with Thunk) (11, turned, in melee with Tanis) 5 Derendil 4 Arokas 1 Drogen
Tanis grits his teeth and hisses as the specter's wild blow connects. He feels his life force starting to ebb but holds on doggedly, barely keeping concentration on his Hunter's Mark. He sees one of the undead go down out of his peripheral vision, and the dwarven cleric hold forth the holy symbol of Moradin to turn two of the foul spirits, including the one that Tanis is in melee with.
The ranger notices right away that his foe is shying away and won't take reactions, so he steps away to the northeast of the chamber before taking another shot. Unfortunately, he is not (yet) aware that damaging the turned undead removes the turning affect, so he continues to attack the same one (S4).
Movement: NE-->N-->N-->N (avoiding opportunity attack since the turned specter cannot take reactions).
Action: Unaware that damaging the turned specter removes the turning effect, Tanis shoots again at the one he had marked with his Hunter's Mark (S4). All attacks at advantage because in darkness he remains invisible to darkvision.
Hand crossbow first attack to hit S4: 26 Hand crossbow first attack damage + Hunter's Mark: 7 + 1 = 8 piercing
Bonus Action: Crossbow Expert bonus attack on S4
Hand crossbow second attack to hit: 17 Hand crossbow second attack damage + Hunter's Mark: 7 + 2 = 9 piercing
Tanis is still in darkness and invisible to creatures that need darkvision to see him (attacks against him at disadvantage).
Both bolts fly at the specter on the south east corner, slowing down as they go through it. The undead flails, barely holding its presence in this plane, and turns toward the direction the bolts came from.
Initiative order: 17 Tanis (8) 17 Thunk (8) 9 Three Specters (24) (in melee with Thunk and Derendil) (5, turned, in melee with Thunk) (19) 5 Derendil 4 Arokas 1 Drogen
