Bjorn is suddenly startled, upon hearing whispered ever so silently in her ear (as if by a ghost), "I knew of your grandfather, young one. He was an honorable man." Nearly jumping out of her chair, Bjorn turns around and finally notices a cloaked figure who has been silently staring over her shoulder, inspecting the map for the last minute or two.
A hand appears out of the folds of the dark adventurer's cloak, offering a heartfelt handshake. "The names Lúthien Adril....I also responded to your posting. I've been around this area for decades, and I'd be more than willing to help you find your missing jewelry. I only ask my fair share in blooding my blades and slinging my arrows!"
Lúthien then grabs a chair from the table, turns it around, pulls off her cloak and lays it over her lap. You all are surprised at her appearance, as with her cloak on she appears to be a simple shadow cast upon the ground, but without her cloak, she's a lithe and sprightly elf. Quite the contrast!
Out of a pocket in her cloak, she pulls out a single gold piece, and flips it in the air, landing perfectly in the center of the table (Performance: 12). "First round is on me."
You all laugh at her sad attempt of a performance. So she pulls out a deck of cards, lays it down on the table, and taps the top card. "Care for a game?"
(Performance: 7) The coin clatters a bit and almost rolls off the table, but someone catches it. That was close. Nice job recovering with the offer to play cards.
So here we have our four adventurers. One of them has map. A map to a place over 200 years old - it details the location of Stone Tooth, a mountain not too far to the north. Inside Stone Tooth is the stronghold of Khundrukar, where the legendary Forge of Fury resides. Bjorn has a purpose, a personal purpose to go. Her matriarch grandmother's dying wish, it seems - recover the ring of her husband.
Looks like Bjorn's posting had some answers. But why? In addition to your casual banter, we wonder why the rest of you care about joining her on her quest?
Reaching across and grabbing Lúthien's hand shaking it firmly"Greetings Lúthien, I am Thoben Battlebeard Cleric of Torm the True. I'll try to leave some for you to dispatch. I am here following the call of my patron to vanquish all evil and protect those who would do the same. After seeing the posting from Bjorn I knew then why I was sent here."
Grabbing my ale I drink the entire cup figuring if Lúthien was buying the first round I'd better drink my current one down quickly.

Bjorn also accepts her ale with grace and turns to Lúthien. "I'm not much for card games, but I'll try my hand," she says, drawing a hand of cards. She tries to hide her grimace at the terrible cards. (Deception 13)
With a roll like that, you couldn't convince your grandmother to bake you cookies. Luthien sees right though your facial expressions. That reminds me to point a few things I like to do in my campaigns.
In a friendlyplayer to player social situation, rolling a 1 can result in something silly, like your pitiful attempt to try and conceal the terrible hand you got, not fooling anyone. I encourage everyone at any time to role-play out terrible rolls. I do it all the time, and it's huge for character development and having a laugh.
In a player to monster or player to NPC situation where things are contensted, any side rolling a 1 is usually very bad. This is where I get to decide something terrible that will happen to you as a result of your blunder. In Bjorn's case, since this is just you all getting to know each other and have fun, I don't consider this an opportunity to punish anyone.
Conversely, if, at any time, a player rolls a nat 20, in any circumstance, I will let you guys decide a realistic amazing result based on what you were trying to do. You'll have to run it by me, obviously, but expect something very good.
If I roll a nat20 for a monster attack, you can expect something awful to happen as well. I have lots of critical hit charts handy, and i'm not a softy, so you healers will be tested.
"Oh boy look at that face, it looks like someone just got a really good hand". Said Lucan Sarcastically. "I'm not really good at cards, I'm more of a dice player, used to bet a ton of money back in the day".
"I am here at the bidding of my Patron Torm the True. Evil must be vanquished and the weak must be protected. When I arrived and saw the posting requesting assistance I knew that this was the reason why I was brought here. My hammer aches waiting to crush those who would be my enemies, the righteous fury of Torm burns inside of me waiting to be unleashed."
Stopping for a moment I realize I have been carrying on a bit....
"Forgive me, there are times when I get beside myself thinking of all the evil and injustice. Rest assured that no matter what I will defend all of you with my life if needed, you have my word."
Touching the amulet around my neck I nod to those around the table, grab my ale and drink down the rest.
"And the house ale is quite good...I'm always game to try a new brew."
"That's good to know, for real. But you should relax a little bit, don't mean to be rude but focusing on defeating your enemies might lead you to the path of darkness".
Said this, Lucan takes a big swig from his drink.
"I think we're all here because the world needs better people, people that like to help others. In all honesty I'm not in it for the money, I just like helping people in need even if it means going on a Dark Cave to find some long lost ring".
Sighing I nod to Lucan, "You are right of course, I tend to let my emotions take control when it comes to serving my patron. I will strive to keep myself more in control, but of course no one is perfect!" I give Lucan a big smile from under my black beard.

In her head, Luthien is counting up her share of the loot....which now includes the shares of two of her adventuring teammates. This is going to be a lucrative expedition!
Bjorn sighs and puts down her cards with a rueful smile. "Have all of you supplies for the journey? I can provide goodberries and have no trouble finding other food and water in the wilderness, but if you wish for a tent you'll need to bring your own. I prefer to sleep under a tree, myself."
"I believe I have everything I need for this journey. I assume eventually we will be inside for the majority." Glancing down I notice by flagon is empty....sigh.

Luthien: “All I’m in need of is some information. For starters, what’s the size of the enemy force? And more importantly, what do they put into this ale to make it taste so damn good?”
As you travel north from the mining town of Blasingdell, you pass through brooding pine forests and deep vales. From where you stand now, you catch sight of a tall, steep hill that rises to a prominent bare knob of rock – the Stone Tooth. A thin spire of smoke rises from some unseen point high on the hill’s slopes, and you can make out a steep, narrow road or track that runs back and forth across the face of the mountainside.
Here are the things you can do, or things that you see. You can make ONE attempt per character to try and pass these tests to discern more information about these areas, so roll carefully. THERE IS A MAP IN THE DM PUBLIC NOTES THAT YOU CAN REFERENCE ON THE IMMEDIATE AREA.
FOLLOW THE PATH?
At the foot of the Stone Tooth, a carefully constructed path winds up the hillside to some unseen height above. From this distance, you can see that the path climbs way up to a door – the Mountain Door.
DC10 Wisdom (Survival) for more information.
SCOUT THE AREA?
You can choose to ignore the path and scale the Stone Tooth’s slopes, but this is hard, with steep slopes and heavy undergrowth. Doing this is not recommended. You can, however, scout the area. DC10 Wisdom (Survival): (A) ????? (B) ?????, (C) ????? (D) ?????, (E) ????? Each pass gains information about these areas.
