You urge the oxen faster, pushing the wagon from behind to get it up the hill ahead. As you crest the top, you see the remnants of Gundren's wagon. Arrows stick out of the dead ox and some of the more valuable items in the cart have been stolen. There are no bodies on the ground, but some blood.
Though Harek is handling his injury well, Jark (I think that was the cleric's name) recognizes that it should have been fatal with or without divine intervention. (Lets say she healed Harek for 11 hit points.)
"Or for ****'s sake", Richard comments. "Really? Okay, I think that was enough sentiment. Let's pick up what valuable is left and try to find out what happened. I do not fancy running into whoever turned their cart into a hedgehog unprepared."
Richard drags himself down from his cart and looks closely as cleric works on Hareks wounds, then proceeds to load whatever he can on the remaining cart.
"On second thought, I think I would like to meet them. They, however, may not be as pleased. Do you think we should try and find Gundren?"

"This was his mission from the start. It would be foolish to not attempt to find him. Does anyone recognize where this arrow could have come from or who would be using them? I have a suspicion that the troll was used to push us into this trap."
I will try and make sense of any tracks to find signs of Gundren or their direction of travel.

"Let me see that," Richard extended his arm, pointing at the arrow. "I know most major bandit groups around these parts, I sometimes... nevermind, I might be able to tell where it came from."

"If the troll was as trap, they might still be around." Ander scans his surroundings. "I would agree. No one deserves this fate. We need to help save Gundren, and give a.... warm welcome to those that perpetrated this act. Damn it!" Ander swears, an indication of just how upset he is, "We were hired to help prevent something like this!"
Whoever did this left in a hurry, making no effort to cover their tracks. Ander is able to follow the trampled foliage to where it meets the troll's path, where the two become indistinguishable. A light trail of blood leads to a slain brigand, tossed carelessly under a bush.
The arrows are military standard, but do not provide Richard with any clues about their owners. He does, however, notice that a strongbox in the bottom of cart has been forced and its contents ransacked.
"At least they're dumb enough to leave survivors and a clear path, that bodes well for us. I do not relish another encounter with that beast but we will know what to expect this time. Lets see if we can't catch this group before they can reach a base and gather reinforcements. What can we do with the cart while we search for Gundren?"
"Then let's proceed while their trail is still hot," Richard suggested, sizing up the cart. "As for the cart, I suggest we leave it there. There's nothing valuable left in it. If nothing else, it will be our landmark for when and if we're coming back."

Sildar agrees to take the cart on to Phandalin then see if he can muster aid from a wizard he knows there. You follow the troll's path, hoping to that you don't encounter its creator. Everyone will make athletics checks to attempt to catch up. DC 10.
The path slopes up dramatically, but pushing through it you are able to overtake the raiders as they near a clearing around a crag in the mountains. There are only four but as they notice your approach one breaks off for the cave entrance at a sprint. The other three draw their weapons and turn to block your entrance into the clearing. Two brigands with swords advance while a tough looking half orc with a crossbow takes aim from behind.
Richard assesses the situation quickly. Out of three bandits, half-orc is the only one with ranged weapon, and he's probably the most dangerous. Chill Touch worked before, it should work again.
Okay, there's something wrong with your rolls. I don't know if the attack hit (my AC is 12) and how much damage it dealt. In case it was lethal disregard the next action. In case it wasn't:
"Fair? Wait till you see the next one, you greasy son of a *****!" Richard yells back, casting Magic Missile at the crossbowman.

"While I usually enjoy being man-handled..." Richard comments sarcastically. "Eat this!"
The wizard whispers words for Poison Spray, opens his palm and sends a puff of noxious gas towards a closing in bandit.
Okay, it's a bit confusing when we don't roll for initiative, so I make one action after the DM makes theirs instead of waiting for everyone. Let me know if that's not okay.
Poison spray does 12 poison damage unless the target succeeds on CON saving throw (DC 13). I'd roll, but I'm unsure about their stats.

Harek hesitates a few moments as the battle starts remembering the last encounter. He sees his comrade knocked prone but before he can rush to his aid, the bandits charge toward him and Richard. He sees the wizard cast his spell and rushed the attacked bandit to gain advantage of his distraction
