Duwamily and Cal scan the area... and it is clear that the man laying in the mud is genuinely in trouble! It looks like he's been severely beaten. But... something feels off to Cal, who mentions it to the gnome... Duwamilly squints to look a little closer... and she realizes that there's someone watching from the woods! In fact, it looks like four or five humanoid figures are watching! But before Duwamilly has a chance to say anything, Delvindra has already rushed to the fallen man's side!
As she falls to her knees next to the bruised and bloodied figure, she hears a voice beside her and feels cold steel against the back of her neck.
"Don't make a move, girlie," says a gruff voice. "Else it just might be yer' last..."
(Delvindra is a good 15 feet in front of the rest of the party, and cut off from easy retreat by a rather beefy bandit. I'll get up a map within an hour or two)
What do you all do?

Duwamilly sighs stoically and shakes her head, seeing Delvindra who has put herself in danger: "Kids... Haven't I taught you yet that haste is a really bad advisor? Let's see if we can fix things... Excuse me a moment, Cal, you're a big guy, stay still for a moment, I'll hide behind you..."
The unusual cleric crouches behind the massive paladin and gathers in short prayer, once again asking for help from her beloved Garl Glittergold... "Grant me but a fraction of thy wit, sire It is all one could need".
(OOC: Duwamilly tries to charm the rather beefy bandit who took Delvindra - by casting Charm Person - DC 13 Wisdom Saving Throw)
After that, the gnome ex-Preceptor comes out of her improvised hiding place and waves at the guy: "Hey! Is it really you?! Do you remember me, honey?"(OOC: If the target fails the saving throw, the charmed creature regards you as a friendly acquaintance... If instead he succeeded, he shouldn't have noticed anything anyway... at worst he will believe that Duwamilly is mistaking him for someone else)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Yasmina groans as the gullible tiefling walks straight into the trap, the cowering in the carriage and quickly pulling up the hood on her new cloak to disappear from sight, ready for what it's worth to use her weak eldritch magic to cover the tiefling's retreat.
Stealth: 21 (Disadvantage on perception checks to notice her)
Well... Duwamilly would have preferred to stay more nearby to the wagon, but since she decided to use Cal to hide her casting, I guess she'll be there, near Cal. At least the bad guy failed his save... He should be Dwamilly's friend now (at least for an hour - and if nobody comes to the idea of attacking him).
"Well... if it isn't... uhhh... well, I'm sure it'll come to me sometime," he says, looking at the gnome with a dumb smile. "How ya' been?"
Deldinvra feels the pressure on the back of her neck lighten up a bit...
"I'm Xana, of course, dear!" Duwamilly (who actually, like all gnomes, has a lot of names - sometimes she introduces herself as Xana - but it's not a name she likes very much, so she reserves it for people she doesn't like very much) approaches "It's been a while, honey, but you're still the same! May I introduce you to my friend Delvindra? You were just about to let her go, weren't you? Let her take a look at the fallen guy and let me see how are you faring..."
"Oh, your clothes are unstitched in several places!" the ex-Preceptor smiles at him "Come towards our wagon! I'll fix it in a moment! You remember how good I am at taking care of you, don't you?"
Assuming that the bandit actually lets go of the tiefling monk, the cleric accompanies him towards the wagon, continuing the conversation: "Are the others stationed here under your orders, honey? I remember that you have always had the vocation of the gang leader..." and, once near the wagon, she slips into her stream of words a few prayers to Garl Glittergold, instantly Mending the holes and scratches in his clothes.
(OOC: Waiting to see his reaction, before taking care of him more...)
(I'll still need you to make a Persuasion check to get him to let Delvindra go. You're doing it at advantage because he's charmed)
"Well it's so good to see ya'," he says, still grinning stupidly. "Huh... so you know the little devil-spawn... that's interesting..."
"What in the Nine Hells are you doing, Boss?" yells one of the other bandits from his place in the woods. "We ain't supposed to chit-chat! Our job is to knock 'em over the head, take their stuff, and get the hell out'a here!"
The muscular bandit glances towards the woods, looking rather confused...

Hearing the words of the yelling bandit, Duwamilly murmurs to the boss: "In my opinion, the guy isn't clear who is the boss here... What do you think? Maybe you need to explain to him that no one attacks your friends... and above all that no one tells you what you must to do, honey?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(I'm just gonna have that complaining bandit roll a little Arcana check to see if he's able to figure out what's happening... I'll use Duwamilly's spell save DC as the DC for his Arcana check).
Bandit's Arcana check: 10

(OOC: This 'encounter' is going a lot differently than the last one... guess that's what I get for throwing an encounter at you guys that's appropriately balanced for your level lol)
The bandit leader sheaths his blade, and Delvindra is free to do as she wills without risk of getting stabbed. Although this was a trap, it's clear that the guy lying on the ground isn't faking. His eyes are nearly swollen shut, his breathing is labored, and it seems even the smallest movement he makes hurts.
"It's okay, Slim, she's a friend," the leader of the bandits says cheerily. "And we don't hurt friends, even if they don't look where they're going."
He pauses.
"Well, unless of course you'd rather come back to camp with us... we've got a lot of catching up to do! I feel like it's been ages since I first met you... uhhh... crud, I don't remember... oh well."

(Hmmm... A Bandit Captain plus 4 Bandits is balanced for 5 level 1 characters? I feel pretty lucky with how we're doing, actually...)
"But yes, honey! We met a few years ago!" Duwamilly reassures the other "You needed to escape unwanted attention... from the guards, maybe... and you hid among the kids I was teaching to! And even now, you see, I'm taking care of kids... like Delvindra and the others... and I'm in a hurry, so I can't come to your camp! But maybe I'll stop by and see you on the way back! Which direction is the camp from here? Or would you prefer that maybe I light a signal fire when I get to this spot?"
After the pleasantries and greetings, the ex-Preceptor waits for the wounded man to be loaded onto the wagon, waits until the wagon moved away a little (just to be more sure that there are no imminent surprises) then she tries to check his conditions... also throwing a Cure Wounds.
And just like that, a fight with the bandits was completely avoided without even using any of the OP magic items (unless someone decides to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by attacking them as they leave to set up their next ambush...)
Duwamilly and Delvindra pull the poor man into the carriage and heal him up. He breathes more easily as bruises fade and heal thanks to Duwamilly's magic.
"Th... thank you," he whispers hoarsely. "I... don't think I would have made it... but... how...?"
I think 25 XP for Duwamilly and 10 XP each for everyone else is fair. Any objections?
(OOC: Also... their leader wasn't actually a bandit captain, he was 'just' a thug, I do have some basic idea of a fair encounter for a level 1 party lol)
"Don't worry and rest, dear" Duwamilly smiles at the wounded. "When you feel better, you'll tell us who you are; maybe we can help you more, or maybe, on the contrary, you can help me and the kids getting a ship! It is a better world, when people get to joke and help each other, isn't it?"
(More than fair. I would be fine with just an award to Duwamilly for the spell use and RP. The rest of us didn't really do anything.)
"We aren't really just going to ride away now and leave them there, are we? Knowing full well that their going to attack or kill the next person who comes along!"
(OOC: I just counter-proposed same XP for everyone and Inspiration for Duwamilly - let's see if it's okay with the DM)
"Delvindra, honey..." Duwamilly looks uncertain "I was thinking of just reporting them to the authorities once they arrived at the port... We now know their camp is near here... Because, you see, my main resource" she shows the cube with which she sent Frinion on a trip "is depleted for today, after having brought back the Pristess from the Far Realm... I don't know how much I can contribute, personally, in defeating the entire gang. They are violent men... maybe they lack your rigorous training, but they might make up with sheer brutality. Isn't it better to leave it to the established order to deal with them? Of course, if you have a way to make it rain fire on their heads, like you did yesterday with Frinion," she shrugs "I won't be the one to be sorry... You can do it even now, while they're moving away, nicely grouped, right? Now that the wounded man is safe from any collateral damage... As for all kids: think with your head, honey, and do what do you feel it is best".
