I never intended to lower people, just to anchor the rope so people could climb down. Either way, I'll play with it. In retrospect, I shouldn't have rolled the athletics checks early, as now people will made decisions based on those rolls. Sorry.
No need to apologize; you did not mis-write; I mis-read. And as for people making decisions based on your early roll, people should make an effort to choose based on character knowledge, not player knowledge, but there certainly can be good character reasons to choose stairs, even rickety ones, over a rope. Like you said, either way, we'll all play with it. If it comes to it, though, I trust you and Destin to roleplay the appropriate level of offense for offering to help and bracing a rope while 6 people completely ignore your efforts and step over the rope to walk past :)
Destin watches the others attempt to scale the stairs. "We got a rope out for you to use." He says in a brash tone. "If you break the stairs, that could make our getting out of here much harder; did you think of that?"
Tumal prepares to give guidance, watching individuals bound down the stairs without waiting for his touch. He looks at Destin and Casmenos. "They seem to be in a hurry."
Marrow grabs the rope and accepts Tumal's guidance. As he begins to climb down, he says Please don't drop me. I would clatter, and probably attract every nasty creature in the place. Acrobatics/Athletics (same modifier): 15 + 3
Bastian and Keksi make it to the bottom of the stairs without incident, though after they pass, as if in response to Destin's words, the stairs and the landing creak and shudder -- whether that is in response to people descending the stairs, or the strain of people bracing a rope, you are not sure.
With the light from Marrow's sword, the three at the bottom can see some more details. The statue dominates the small room, and, aside from the rickety stairs encircling the walls on the way down, there are no other features of note. Two corridors lead east out of the room; the northernmost one extends some distance, and perhaps splits in two directions. The southernmost one ends after 10 feet with a door.
At the top would be Casmenos and Destin holding the rope, Tumal casting Guidance on people going by, Kelvin, and Cassyt.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Cassyt swings to and fro, perhaps in bravado, perhaps in celebration of not being in the library. Midway down, she swings off the wall and clips one of the stair components, letting go of the rope. The stairs, and Cassyt, come crashing down. Cassyt takes 11 bludgeoning damage in the fall, and, perhaps worse, has brought enough of the staircase down as to make it unusable in either direction. The three remaining at the top are unharmed, and still have their rope, and the collapse of the staircase has revealed a pockmarked section of the wall, which, although perhaps not as easy as using a companion-braced rope, does not appear to be a difficult climb.
"I'm fine, I'm...fine," Cassyt insists as she sways to and fro. Keksi's word washes over her, and she perks up. "Thank you, I'm fine. Just never been down here before. Ah. Jergal," she says, glancing up at the statue. "He serves Kelemvor, but he's served on the wrong side, too. Nasty bit of work...all law and regulation, no compassion."
Bastian looks at the statue. "Laws and rules for their own sake are rarely just." He motions towards the idol. "Something here tells me this situation was no different."
As the commotion from the collapsed staircase dies down, those of you on the floor (meaning all but Destin, Tumal, and Casmenos) hear some faint shuffling from behind the door to the southeast.

Bastian braves the stairs.
Acrobatics: 10
Um, here we go. [screams internally]
Keksi descends the stairs. (Acrobatics 21)
Destin watches the others attempt to scale the stairs. "We got a rope out for you to use." He says in a brash tone. "If you break the stairs, that could make our getting out of here much harder; did you think of that?"
Casmenos, about to speak, is beaten to it by Destin. He waves the rope side to side to bring attention to it.
Tumal prepares to give guidance, watching individuals bound down the stairs without waiting for his touch. He looks at Destin and Casmenos. "They seem to be in a hurry."

Marrow nimbly and silently uses the rope to get to the bottom.
Marrow draws his sword to light the area, and takes a good look around.
Who's left at the top?

Kelvin takes the rope. Acrobatics, with guidance 20
Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain
Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards.
DM - The Old Keep
Cassyt grabs the rope and says "Guess it's my turn."
Acrobatics: 6 + Guidance 3
Cassyt swings to and fro, perhaps in bravado, perhaps in celebration of not being in the library. Midway down, she swings off the wall and clips one of the stair components, letting go of the rope. The stairs, and Cassyt, come crashing down. Cassyt takes 11 bludgeoning damage in the fall, and, perhaps worse, has brought enough of the staircase down as to make it unusable in either direction. Casmenos immediately approaches the edge of the landing and looks down. "Stay still, we'll be down and can mend your injuries!"
Looking over at Destin, "Your turn?"
"You took quite a tumble, Cassyt! Are you okay?" Keksi will heal her with the healing word: 6.
