The walls of this semi-circular chamber are lined with nearly a hundred loculi, each containing the bones of one or more deceased residents of Phlan. An obelisk stands in the center of the chamber. Its four faces are covered in mysterious runes.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Marrow walks slowly past the opening of the passage leading into the room, and looks in. Rune-covered obelisk plus dozens of dead bodies. Somebody obviously thought that was a good idea. Are obelisks part of burial custom in Phlan? Part of Kelemvor's practices, perhaps? He aims these questions vaguely in the direction of Cassyt and Casmenos, as he moves to take up position at the top of the stairs, holds up his still-glowing rapier, and peers downwards. Perception: 8
When the group pauses outside the obelisk chamber, Tumal peers around to see what is going on and finally decides to follow Casmenos into the chamber.
Perception on the room in general: 19
Rolling to inspect the runes, but I don't know what modifier to use, so here's a standard d20 and various modifiers listed: 19 (arcana +2, history +4, religion +2)
After his eyes glance at the runes upon the obelisk, Tumal physically jerks backward. He glances at the others to see if anyone noticed his physical reaction, and then looks back at the obelisk. As his eyes travel across the runes, he leans in a little, a look of wonder appearing on his face. Tentatively, he reaches out a hand and brushes the tips of his fingers along the runes.
"I...this looks to be a standard burial chamber," Cassyt says to Marrow. "Its customs are not quite our own, but they appear quite respectful. I'm sorry, but I cannot read those markings."
Tumal gives Casmenos a patient look as the paladin turns and walks out of the room. The elf then turns to Cassyt, his face becoming animated. "This memorial ascribes many wonderful deeds to the selfless individuals who have been laid to rest here." He turns and points at some of the runes. "This one, a simple farmer, provided shelter to travelers in Kelemvor's name. This one," he says, pointing a little further down, "was a noblewoman who gave to the poor and supported the church." He looks back at the guide. "It appears all of them looked out for others during their lives and have earned the favorable judgement of your god in the hereafter." Looking back at the obelisk, he continues, "This one helped shelter those who lost homes in a fire. That one provided food during lean crop years. That one helped raise the children of those called to action." Tumal's voice trails off as his eyes continue to move up and down the runes. "What fascinating stories. I wish I knew more."
Cassyt's academic face gives way to a moment of genuine reverence. "Thank you for this," she says to Tumal. "Doomguide Yorvir may have known of this part of our past, but I did not. It is good to be reminded now and again of the good the people and the Faithful have done, even as we confront horrors clawing their way back from that same past." She not-quite wipes her eyes. "Speaking of which, our paladin is not wrong about wanting to see those horrors put to rest quickly; we should not let him confront them alone."
Casmeons has made his way down the hallway, peeking around one corner, then the next to come upon another room, an altogether different type of burial chamber. He wisely stops short of entering the room alone, but can make out the general purpose and setting of the room from his location in he hallway.
The walls in this section are lined with burial niches containing skeletons, as in other areas of the catacombs, but skeletons also stare down at you from the ceiling where they were set into shallow plaster. Some arm bones, leg bones, and skulls have cracked free and fallen to the floor, but most remain in the positions and poses they were given ages ago.
Marrow continues to hold back, and this time walks with Keksi as they follow the paladin along the corridor. I remember that when we met, you spoke of finding a way to reach the souls of the undead. Have you had any thoughts on that in our recent encounters? These creatures seem... reluctant to speak or to listen to us.
Casmenos cautiously takes a step into the room. The plaster-suspended skeletons definitely create an uneasy feeling, but there is no change anywhere that you can detect in response to your entrance.
I am assuming, unless told otherwise, that everybody but Casmenos is gathered in the hallway by the corner, and not in the room
The rogue follows Casmenos into the chamber. You can't shake the feeling of being watched, though the skeletons, encased in plaster, are completely inert.
Reminder: these are 10 foot squares on this view of the map, so the room is approximately 50' long, and I have the two of you in the first square, and everybody else in the hallway.
Marrow is curious about what lies ahead, but also a little concerned that the skeletons from the Obelisk room might all suddenly jump up and come after them. He's waiting at the corner so he can see what Casmenos and Bastian are doing, but still keeping an eye on the stairs the group just came down.

Edit: Appears I didn't study much...

"The runes are celestial. They simply speak to the humble and pious nature of those interred here. Lets move on."
Casmenos leaves the Obelisk chamber and begins to head down and east, to peek around the corner.

Casmenos will wait for the others to catch up. In the meantime, he'll listen, smell or otherwise try to discern any creatures in the next room(s).

Bastian inspects the next area with Casmenos, looking for any dangers ahead.

You can perceive no movement in the room, and the general smell of rot present in the catacombs is too pervasive to detect and differences ahead.
Seeing the others are behind, Casmenos will step into the room.
Tumal follows Cassyt, looking once more at the obelisk before turning the corner to walk down the hallway.
Casmenos cautiously takes a step into the room. The plaster-suspended skeletons definitely create an uneasy feeling, but there is no change anywhere that you can detect in response to your entrance.

Bastian is following Casmenos into the room as backup.
