Yeah I think that's what we agreed - Coloured text for speech, italics for internal monologue, regular for narration, spoiler for out of character. It's kind of fun to think of the big-shot blood thirsty pirate rogue suddenly trying to justify that accidental goblin death out loud apropos of nothing, maybe he has a conscience after all!
Worth bearing in mind if you (the you in this sentence is me :D) were playing on mobile yesterday, the banner that kept you informed about the maintenance schedule also took up enough screen real-estate that you could not use the text formatting bar on mobile effectively, and also made reading posts a bit more awkward than it needed to be, so mistakes may have been made.
When searching the four goblins, including Jata, you find that one goblin has eight electrum pieces (each worth half a gold piece) and the other three have no currency. You can recover all four scimitars if you wish, but they are in a similar poor condition as the others you found.
Asher turns to the halfling, "Scupper, I find it quite odd that you are the one that has an issue with killing the goblin? After all, we did just kill several of them right beforehand. They're only creatures."
"Those gobbles - fair fight. Ish."Strix whispers. "They clever with trap, we clever with ambush, can't both be right. Tempus happy, spirits happy. Energy in balance. But Jata.... liver never stood chance." He shakes his head sadly.
After ten more minutes on foot, you come upon the end of the forested area, and are in wildlands of tall grass and thick bushes, with small clumps of trees dotted here and there. The area is increasingly hilly, and there are some natural breaks in the ground as the trail passes past exposed rock faces. Another twenty minutes, and you clear a particularly large thicket. You hear noises of creatures, possibly goblins, moving, and this is confirmed when a familiar kind of shrieking cry is heard. Directly ahead of you is the mouth of a cave, and the trail leads directly into it.
The scene in front of the mouth of the cave is dramatic. A tall man, perhaps human or elf, stands surrounded by goblins on each side, four in total. It appears the battle has just started; the man has his longsword drawn, but not yet bloodied, and the goblins are circling, cackling, and waiting to strike.
You can choose to intervene immediately, in which case please roll initiative. Or you can watch to see what happens. The battle is taking place about fifty feet ahead of you.
So, the second Asher sees this, he would 100% rush into the battle. That being said, I don't anyone to feel like "Just because Asher rushes in, we all have to."
Initiative: 10
If Asher is able to do the following, without revealing is allies, he does: He screams as he charges into the fray with his glaive in hand, "Come you little cretins! Allow me to spill your blood!"
While Strix is bound to not see a fight fought unfairly, Asher's intervention evens the odds significantly, and besides he hasn't exactly been excelling in hand-to-hand recently. His spirit and body are out of alignment, something to ponder later. Readying his axe, he uses the distraction of the battle to move to a position where he's behind the Tall man and observe, at least for this round.
Stealth10 if needed.
He pays close attention to what the man looks like and what he's wearing, bearing in mind what Jata said earlier about an unknown party - What was he called? Spiderman? No, Black spider! - for whom they procured the prisoners. Basically, looking for spidery motifs or the ultimate sign of evil, a goatee. And he's particularly interested to see if the man bears any crests or emblems that resemble the one on Strix's mapcase quiver that he recovered from the ambushed horses.
Does the man's position relative to the goblins suggest he's going in or coming out of the cave?
Scupper sees no point in jumping directly into the fray, but sees no harm in trying to pick a goblin off at distance.
Short bow 10 damage 8 plus sneak attack (within 5 feet of an opponent) 3
Scupper mutters under his breath, c'mon ye wee pin cushions.
I have had to struggle with color and other features on occasion when mobile had made it too difficult (selecting any type covers the whole screen with my keyboard) but use quote marks for outward dialogue. Scupper didn't really hear anyone complain about the killing which he fiund surprising since he's the only pirate. Still, killing something tied up is likely to make anyone at least question themselves a little bit and he figured at least Dario would be thinking we were looking a little bloodthirsty so some of that was for him. Scupper also just has a hard time shutting up (but can't always get to a phone fast enough to join in 😁)
I don't believe I have disadvantage on the shot since their circling him and not actively in melee. (Does melee targets even create disadvantage on ranged? I forget).
Dario watches as the goblins surround the man, taunting him with their crude blades. Damn fool got himself surrounded by goblins, Dario thinks to himself. He pulls back his bow and takes aim at one of the goblins. He waits to see what his fellow companions decide, but at the sight of Asher charging into the fray Darion unleashes his bow.
Dekhan takes a moment to gawk at the man rushing in to the fray, he sees arrows flying out of the distance and is relieved to see they're flying towards the goblins and not him.
HA HA! I told you bastards you should have run when you had the chance!
On Dekhan's turn he laughs again, salutes his new Glaive wielding friend, and slashes at the nearest goblin with his long sword.
Welcome MarkDmitri and Dekhan (who may or may not be a villain, we shall have to see). We're going with bold and colour for direct speech; Strix has already taken orange, he might literally eat your face for imitating him. I don't think anyone has any bluecolours yet. :) However, colour doesn't always work from mobile, in which case just use quotation marks.
For Scupper, no, melee targets don't create disadvantage on ranged attacks unless it's you that's in melee range with them. For the purposes of sneak attack, they are sufficiently engaged with the man while circling, so it does give you sneak attack.
Put your spoiler here. Hi Guys! I'm really excited to be joining you in this campaign! I'm Mark and I appreciate your patience while I figure some of this stuff out, this is my first PBP game. FIIIIIIiiiiine, I'll be blue, don't want my face getting eaten... that's my meal ticket.
On Varinths turn he will casually stagger past the fray, tipping a hat that is not there to the new sword wielder Mornin'
He will then slump heavily to one side of the entrance to the cave. Putting down his Staff of Near Uselessness he will look around confused as to why there is not a log at the entrance as he had planned. Do I have a plan? He takes off his jerkin and spreads it across the entrance, ripping it if need be.
Asher charges towards the goblins, and as he does so, an arrow whistles past his ear, perfectly controlled from Dario's bow, and sinks into Goblin 4's chest, dropping her like a stone.
Goblin 1 notices the approaching group and gives a loud shriek that comes across more as a squeak, and he lashes out with his scimitar at the man: Attack: 15 Damage: 5. That hits, and the man staggers a little as the scimitar bypasses his shield and slashes across his arm, leaving a large wound.
Goblin 2 gives a howl of delight as he sees Goblin 1's strike land, and goes in for the kill: Attack: 19 Damage: 7. The strike hits, stabbing into the man's thigh where he has little protection, and producing another large gash; the blood pours out, and the man collapses to the ground.
Scupper sees the man fall, and this turn of events does provide a clean line of sight to Goblin 2 who struck the last blow, so Scupper takes aim with his shortbow and fires; sadly, the shot glances off the goblin's scant armour and does no damage.
Strix watches from the shadows; the goblins give no sign of having seen him.
Goblin 3, also emboldened at the man's fall and apparently not caring that one of his fellows is also down, moves towards the approaching Asher, apparently confident still of superior numbers. (He is not able to reach Asher with the movement he has.)
Goblin 4 is dead.
