You enter the tunnel in single file formation, with Solaris taking the lead. Solaris sees a faint light ahead. As he reaches the light, he noticed a cold breeze hit him that permeates throughout the large natural cavern he enters, carrying with it the faint scent of decaying flesh. A crevasse divides the cavern and is flanked by two rough stone columns that support the twenty-foot-high ceiling. Two arched wooden bridges span the chasm.

Autzen and Adolmain move into position. Though attempting to rely on their usual ability to move in silence, their movements create an echo that permeates throughout the cavern. Though Autzen doesn't seem to notice anything amiss, Adolmain notices a few details that might have been missed by a less experienced adventurer. He notices the bridges crossing the crevice below appear to be faulty, and perhaps a tug of an anchor post would cause the bridges to collapse. Adolmain wonders if the bridges are simply old, or perhaps something more sinister is at play. Looking down in the crevice he sees various half eaten bodies, equipment, and the belongings of former "visitors" to the cavern below the manor.
Adolmain's eyes the rest of the cavern, and his skin begins to crawl. He sees a "thing" that he can't describe. Grotesque, with the skin of a leper, and……one eye, looking at him.
The creature only returns Adomain's glare, making no movement. Adolmain signals to the others that the creature is behind a column in front of them, on the other side of the crevice.

Solaris moves to see the creature, and is resigned to the fact that the party must tread carefully. He turns to the party members and openly tells them what the creature is, disregarding giving away their presence by speaking loudly. It doesn't matter, because the creature is a Nothic.
A Nothic that can read minds.
Solaris recounts that the Nothic is not only dangerous in melee combat, with its quick claws that can cut a man from the navel to the ear, but also attack an opponent's mind. Solaris doesn't know much about the creature, but he relays to the the group that the creature is intelligent, dangerous, and if he remembers his studies from the monastery, many suffer from insanity, a curse in exchange for their mind.
As your party takes in the potentially bad news, your heads begin to feel……weird. Your heads feel numb; not enough to injure, but you notice. Then the voices fill your head.
Hello there friends, you hear, in your head. You don't actually hear the whispers with your ears. Your mind is simply filled with the words of the Nothic.
I mean you no harm friends. I am not insane. I'm completely normal. Yess….yesss…..very normal. Sooo sooo sooo normal. Yes…me normal.
Your skin begins to crawl as the nothic continues.
Do you have food for me? I'm soooo soooo sooo very very hungry. Let's be friends. Lets share meat together friends. I will not attack you. I'm kind. I'm not insane. No no no no not insane at all. I'm just hungry….yes….hungry hungry.
The creature looks at Solaris, drool coming out of its mouth, and puss surrounding its single large eye in the middle of its head.
What secrets do you have for me hero. Please do tell your new friend…..I know many secrets…..yes..yes…so many secrets. Do you?

The Nothic shows a wicked smile as he successfully reads the mind of Solaris. Solaris waves his hands, as if he could physically prevent the Nothic from reading his mind. But the Nothic's powers are powerful.
Ahhh……..Solaris……..my new friend. Open your mind to me. Do not fear me. I can help you. I can help you find the Redbrand leader. Yes……yes…….I'm a helper…not insane. Let me help you find Glasstaff, the leader of the Redbrands. I can help…..for a price. A low price……a fair price……..yes, I can help you defeat the Redbrands and their leader. Shall we discuss my proposal friend?
Rastin senses this creature is evil and quite dangerous. Particularly concerning is the fact that he seems to be able to communicate telepathically, which makes Rastin very nervous, as he knows he is at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to matching intellects. However, he makes up for his mental shortcomings via his flowery words. Rastin hopes he may be able to avoid a fight here and save their blades and energy for the Redbrands. Although he is not sure he needs to speak aloud, he does so anyway noting this creature “spoke” to him in the common tongue.
”Friend, I trust that you are dealing with us honestly when you say that you mean us no harm. We mean you no harm either. Our dispute is with the Redbrands who inhabit this manor. All we wish is to pass through here so we can deal with them. You are hungry. I’m sorry. Perhaps we can strike a deal that will benefit you and us equally. I will give you one of my rations of food if you allow us to pass by safely and we would be extremely grateful if you could share any information that would be helpful in finding the Redbrands and dealing with them. In addition, if we happen to find any food that would be to your liking in the manor, I will promise to bring that to you. Perhaps you would be interested in a rather large meal? Human flesh, perchance? While I cannot guarantee there will be any dead bodies at the end of our ‘meeting’ with the Redbrands, I can tell you that we were attacked by several of their companions yesterday and what was left of them would have been a substantial feast for any creature that enjoys human meat. Perhaps this interests you? If so, can we make a deal? A small payment now for safe passage and information on the Redbrands, and we will promise to bring back any sustenance that becomes available upstairs. I suspect the later payment will be...bountiful.”

The nothic immediately responds to Rastin telepathically for all to "hear" in their minds.
Dragonborn…yes…a true friend you are. We should be friends. I'm friendly. We're all friends he he he *cackle* yes….friends we are.
The Nothic continues telepathically, I will take you up on your offer. Human flesh for a secret. I know many secrets. You come back here with redbrand flesh, and for each body, I will divulge a new secret. Yes….yes…a friendly deal among friends….yes….yes
In this crevasse below that bridge next to you, you will find a sword. That's the first secret. A gesture of good faith to my new friends. No more secrets for you. I let you pass, with the sword, a magical sword, and you come back with flesh. Take nothing else. The gold, the potions the scroll. Only the sword. My gift to you. Fresh flesh for Talon, the sword of my former friend.. I'll take that ration you promised me, and that earns you the sword. The sword belonged to a former friend of mine…yes….I "had" so many friends.
Your eyes notice a chest in the crevasse below. The crevasse is not steep and you figure you can descend down and back easily (difficult terrain but ability check not necessary to reach the chest)
Keeping a still mind as to lessen the chance of a tell, Autzen moves towards the bridge and down the embankment to retrieve the sword. There is no chance this friendly agreement is based on any reality Autzen is aware of... surely this is a mistake, but sometimes you have to play the game. However, Autzen prefers to play with his eyes open... there must be a trap
Perception 2
In the likely event there is a trap Autzen (sic) READY(s) himself to immediately put an arrow in that disgusting eyeball.

Autzen finds it hard to concentrate to evaluate the danger in the area, and he notices nothing out of the ordinary other than the shaky bridges that Solaris alerted the party about. He goes down the crevasse, and finds the chest referred to by the Nothic.
The bottom of the crevasse feels unnaturally cold, and it smells of death. Various half-eaten creatures litter the ground.
The battered The chest contains many coins and gems. Autzen notices two potion and a scroll. Atop the treasure lies a longsword, with the words "Talon" engraved on the the blade. Its hilt is worked in the shape of a bird of prey with outspread wings. Despite the cold, the sword feels warm to the touch, indicating that it could be magic.
Yea Tiefling, the Nothic conveys to the party with its telepathy. I'm not insane. I'm not a monster. I'm a friend. Now bring me the rations, and more flesh will lead to more secrets…so many secrets…..
