"I'm afraid I have obligations tomorrow that prevent me from going with you, but I can provide detailed instructions on how to get there." He describes the best route from the Yawning Portal: "Head down Soothseer's Way to the Way of the Dragon, then take the High Road to the North Ward, turn on to Saerdoun Street and the Trollskull Manor will be will be two blocks along on your right on Trollskull Alley. Here, that's a lot to remember, let me write it down for you."
Volo provides the party with a list of directions on the back of a parchment scroll map of the city.
(I'm okay with you rolling for HP if you want and feel lucky but fixed is on average a better choice I think.)
”Thank you” Dwaye says to Volo before taking the map then turning to the rest of the party ”What do you guys say about meeting back here tomorrow at noon? Then we can all go to the manor together and scope it out, see if it's really haunted, or if it's just a bunch of rumors.” Dwaye says as he pockets the map for use tomorrow.
(Alright, here seems like a good point to allow characters to do some self-directed exploration of Waterdeep, after your characters get some rest but before continuing on with the main plot. Maybe do some shopping in the Trade Ward, do some crafting, have a picnic in the City of the Dead, or whatever you want. We'll pick up with the visit to Trollskull Manor when you all agree it's time to move forward.)
As everyone is talking, a dwarf with a long, dark red beard that is braided and in scale mail with a greataxe on his back walks into the tavern and looks around the tavern before spotting the party at a table. He goes over and asks, "Do you know anywhere I can go to earn some gold? I've been low on luck getting a job and need some money for supplies. I'll be willing to work for you, with you, or for someone you may know. I just need some gold in my pocket." He then pulls up a seat and sits down waiting for an answer.
“A dwarf walks into a tavern! Seriously, truth is better than fiction!”
Alton chuckles at his own joke, not really saying it to entertain. “You’re out of luck though. We do have a job, but it doesn’t pay. Dangerous too. Still interested?”
While the group is chatting, and now that they have settled deep into the table with drinks flowing, Alton gets thinking back to the adventure they just had. Watching his companions, he muses. This song I have from Mystra really is a gift. I don’t know if I could keep it bottled up within the cloisters of the temple any longer. Is it really time to go? An adventuring life, with random scoundrels. Seems like a good one. Full of danger and poor pay, but maybe riches.
And stories.
A dissonant whisper feels like it is building inside me, and I think I need to see where it takes me.
Addressing Volo, the halfling says “I for one accept your quest. I’ll gather my things from the House of Wonder and prepare for a long stay. And thank you.”
Alton has leveled up as a bard!
Fixed hit points added, and the spell dissonant whispers has been learned from Mystra.
"I would be still interested. A unpaid job can get your foot in the door for lots of paid ones. Also you never know what you might find while on a quest that might be of value." the dwarf says with a glimmer in his eye. "I almost forgot to introduce myself, I am Arvian Brewbeard. It's a pleasure to meet all of you." Arvian sticks out his hand towards the group to shake hands.
(Welcome to the party, Arvian! Speaking of the party, maybe it would be good for someone to come up with a name for your adventuring venture? Just a thought.)
"Hi Arvian! I'm Soar, your friendly neighborhood doomguide. I'm a paladin of Kelemvor. What can you do? Any magic? Where do you come from? We just rescued this chap over here from a sewer thief hideout, and might be getting a haunted tavern of some kind - I'm a little loose on the details."
Soar has just returned from a stop at her chapterhouse where she rested and told her brethren about her adventure and shared some new abilities with them (she can cast spells and smite things now!) and expected to be welcomed back with open arms, but they sort of rolled their eyes, cowered a bit behind some old unused caskets during her wild recounting of her exciting night, and gently and firmly told her to go back out and keep exploring in the name of Kelemvor. She only lost a bit of her smile after that and you can't really tell it affected her, but she'd much rather talk about other things, back at the Yawning Portal.
"Nice to meet you Soar. I can't cast any magic or use it. I'll be honest saying that magic still confuses me and I've been alive for almost 100 years. I guess that is young in dwarf, but still a long time in general. My main quest is to brew the best ale I can. I come from a long line of brewers (hence the name Brewbeard) and the tradition is once a child of the family becomes an adult, they must set out on a quest among the world with nothing but basic supplies from home, a basic weapon and basic armor of their choice and head out to earn their way to becoming a brewmaster. I have to earn everything to make the ale and to go back home a highly respected member of the family and to inherent the tavern of my family." Arvian finally takes a breath after talking and then continues with, "The quest is set until I die. Another condition is that you have to beat other family members to completing the quest, but I am an only child so I must complete this for the name of Brewbeard to live on." After all of that, Arvian asks, "So what is your story Soar?" and then gesturing to the group, "And the story of all of you. Everyone has one, no matter who."
Alton plucks at a few notes on his lute as they sit and talk, and tunes it a bit. The instrument is cherry wood, and old. A gift from an old flame.
The notes are rich and sombre, but the plucking light and hopeful.
”Downtime, I guess I could use the time for some language research and composing. Hopefully not too long. I’ll stay here at the Yawning Portal until we are ready to go.”

Ignis heads to Virgin's Square, the largest open-air market in the Trade Ward. He starts looking for the scale of a red dragon among the many sellers of magical materials. Does he find one? (Roll Investigation to find out; if anyone else decided to tag along with him, they may roll to find one as well.)
"That's an interesting story, Arvian! So do you know how to brew beer now? If we are really getting a tavern, then we might be able to use someone who knows their way around brewing supplies, finding good stuff around Waterdeep to sell, and setting up the bar. You know, assuming there's no REALLY bad ghosts haunting the place. We'd have to get rid of those," she says, her eyes growing a bit distant.
"But if we're being honest here, Arvy, I've got a bit of a soft spot for ghosts. Sure there are mean ones, and, well, one of the reasons we have Doomguides at all is to turn them and destroy them to put them back to a permanent rest. My brethren are very, very good at that. But there are not-so-mean ghosts, who just want a bit more time on Faerun, and aren't causing any harm, and just want to have a little fun before they pass on. I think that's fun, and often kind of sweet. So I'm thinking of saying yes to Volo's proposal and getting a haunted tavern and maybe seeing if there are ghosts inside who aren't so mean. Maybe they have great stories to tell. Ghost stories! Literal ghost stories."
She looks back at Arvian and the others. "Apologies -- I live in the City of the Dead over on the east side of town and probably have some strange views on this kind of thing. All of this to say is that I'm curious and hopeful that this might be a very fun adventure. It wouldn't pay, well, anything Arvian. At all. We'll all probably have to pay a bit of the little gold we have to clear out an old tavern and make it useable. But maybe we could start giving the Yawning Portal a run for its money. No pit of mysterious doom like that, but stories of some ghosts... that could be fun."
”Huh, I didn't really think of it like that...” Dwaye says to Soar before turning to Arvian ”The name’s Dwaye, nice to meet you, my story’s a sad one that I'd rather not tell... But I am looking forward, I'm actually practicing magic right now, and I can almost cast spells, watch this” Dwaye says before making some hand motions while saying some magic words, he then outstretches his right hand, and a single spark flies out from the tip of his middle finger ”That's about all I can do now, but I'm so close to being able to cast something, I can tell”

A warforged walks up to the group "Hey paladin, you seem like your getting some good jobs from volo, would ya mind another one to join your group oh and i'm Ripi." Ripi says as he leans on his quaterstaff
Seeing Ripi enter, Volo remarks how in all his travels of Faerûn he's never seen a sight quite like this, and that "I must know more about this wonderful suit of armor you're wearing, it's clearly the work of a great crafts-mage! How did you come across such an artifact, it almost moves like it's alive!" (Warforged, if they exist in the Forgotten Realms at all, are exceedingly rare, so Volo's confusion is understandable.)
"Ah its not a suit i'm a warforged, our kind isnt the most common around here." Ripi will go over the the bar and get the strongest drink and just down it placing 2 gold on the counter and downing it

Ignis searches high and low, but does not find an adult red dragon's scale for sale; he does find a vendor of rare animal parts and medicinal concoctions willing to sell him a juvenile green dragon's claw, in powder form, but that's really not the same thing at all, is it? Probably isn't even real dragon claw, chalk or talcum most likely. Disappointed, he leaves the market empty-handed.
"My current brewing knowledge is basic. Admittedly the best I could do is a basic ale as of now. I have to learn from brewmasters and teach myself with money I earn to become the best brewer possible. I have 0 gold in my pocket, but I am still willing to come along with you guys as you can usually find things of value in haunted places and the fact that we are not getting paid allows us to sell things for profit. I would of course split evenly among us if I find anything as there is no reason to keep all of the gold when finding it would be a team effort. The more I earn, the quicker to the title of brewmaster I become." Arvian takes a quick breath then continues, "I also would be inheriting a tavern if I complete the quest given to me by my family. So we would not have to spend money on a new tavern." Arvian finally stops talking, seeming winded from talking so much.
