Zeke's eye catches a young, thin man with messy brown hair and a red bandana on his neck watching him from a seated position on the grass back near the town center.
Pitching his voice low Zeke says to Tarja 'No dragons, but I'm going to have a conversation with this gentleman who's watching us.'
Shrugging his cape back and letting his wings flare out to the sides, the barbarian strides across the street, never breaking direct eye contact with the young man with messy hair.
Fae would station herself outside the miner's exchange as well, worried she might be tempted to spend more gold. She figured it'd be safer for her coin purse outside.
When Zeke goes to check out the young man Fae would stay behind, though she'd keep a close eye from afar. She'd also take a look around to see if there were others Zeke may not have noticed.
As soon as Zeke moves towards the watcher, the young man gets to his feet and moves away at about the same rate, trying to maintain a safe distance. He heads down the road that leads East from the Stonehill Inn as all of the Redbrands they've seen have done.
OOC . Feel free to pursue, but he'd definitely move away from you, as fast as he can even if necessary.
The young elf replies to Ethan "but of course, we have a large variety." "Everything here was found in the nearby hills, streams, and mines. Not staking a claim of your own out there? We have some other miners looking to sell their claims! You've got some fancy gear there too. You might be better equipped than most to strike it rich!" He proceeds to show Ethan a large variety of gems, metals, gold, etc. He does tell Ethan that Barthen's is the best place for mundane tools, as the Exchange is for miners looking to buy or sell a claim in the hills or to exchange valuable minerals they've unearthed for coin.
As the two start looking through the selection, a familiar looking woman in green, the same woman who had witnessed the staged scene as the party left the Lionshield, emerges from the back. "Ah, excellent, Phandalin's newest patrons! I hoped you and your friends would be visiting us when I saw you in town. We've got some excellent spots available for claim!"
Zeke would pursue the young man for about 30 feet and then stop - having reached the end of the invisible tether that keeps him tied to a spot that would let him protect as many of his colleagues as possible at once.
Dissatisfied with the thug's retreat, Zeke would turn on his heel and return to the group outside the Exchange.
'It might be advisable to have a conversation with these Redbrands before heading out of town. I don't like the interest they've shown in our activities.'
The woman in green looks at Elra and says "why yes dear." "You go out there and discover your treasures, and you lay claim to it. Once a miner has found a suitable deposit of valuable gems or metals he can claim it as his own and be left undisturbed by other civilized folk to mine it as he sees fit. If he grows weary of the toil or has more riches than one could spend, he can sell his claim to another and move on. This of course only works if everyone agrees to the system, but it is better than claims being taken through violent means. The Miner's Exchange exists to keep order amidst it all, and turn those finds into coin, or vice versa. We have some exceptional claims held currently, if you want to try your luck!"
"Oh dear, where are my manners, my name is Halia Thornton. And yours?
"My, a rescue? Is someone lost out there in the hills, or beneath them? Alas people do go missing in pursuit of their fortunes..."
Zeke's prey disappears down the eastern road and is not seen again for the time being.
'The Redbrands have been following us rather closely. I'm concerned that if we leave as planned, we may find that this town is closed to us on our return - meaning we have no safe line of retreat in case things go poorly on our rescue mission.'
The broad-shouldered tiefling looks to each of his friends. 'I feel rather strongly that we need to more fully assess the nature of these Redbrands before leaving them behind us.'
"Goblins? Oh dear." Halia looks like she might inquire further but then the group departs. "Nice to meet you as well. Come on by if we can be of assistance in any way, and good luck with your rescue effort."
"Oh, um Elra. Elra Skylash," Elra waves goodbye as the rest of the party starts to leave. "Sorry we didn't get to talk more!"
Elra catches up with the rest of the group, and upon hearing that Zeke mention the Redbrands asks, "What makes you think we couldn't come back into town? Are they going to put up fences in the time it takes us to get there and come back? Gundren..." Elra trails off, not wanting to mention what she saw, "well Gundren could be in trouble."
'Fences don't worry me, but a hostile town that won't let us in if we need a place to recoup does - as does an ambush in the middle of the night from Thugs who follow us out of town.'

Ethan hand the potion of invulnerability to Tarja, before stepping up to talk to the elf.
"Hello, my name is Ethan and I'm looking to purchase some rocks, crystals and gems. Hhmm, also metals, if you have ingots for sale."
"I'm a crafter and need various things for my designs, do you have various coloured rocks, crystals and gems for sale?"
Ethan looks back the way the 3 dwarves were headed and adds,
"I might also be interested in a shovel and a pick as well, if you have them. In case the opportunity to use them, arises in our travels."

"Right, tools from Barthen, got it, thank you."
Ethan has already started looking through the materials placed before him.
"Ooww, yes, hmm, this is nice...."
Ethan places items to the side, that he would like, then works out what he can get for 50gp.
Ethan gets more rocks and metals then crystals and gems, but there are still a few tiny crystals and gems in the mix.
As the women talks about claims, Ethan remarks.
"Oh, uh, well we have someone to go and rescue, so I'm not sure we have time to go digging for materials."
"Besides, I'm more of a maker then a collector. I would rather use my time to create then to dig up materials."
"But as said, we have someone to rescue, so that's the biggest job before us right now."

Ethan finishes packing his purchase, turning to Elra,
"Well I'm done here, I'm going to see how the others are doing. See if its ok to go back to Barthen's for those tools."
Ethan smiles at Halia,
"Nice to meet you Halia, maybe I will see you again sometime."
Ethan heads outside to Fae, Arvel, Zeke and Tarja,
"Um, is it ok if I go back to Barthen's? I thought of something that could be useful to have, but they don't sell it here."
Ethan looks between Fae and Zeke,
"What is it? Why are you giving each other strange looks? Did something happen?"

'An entire family has apparently gone missing. I'm concerned that if we leave them unattended they might accelerate their activities.'
Zeke looks up and down the street and nervously shifts his shield up and down his arm.
'Leaving them in our path of retreat is bad tactics until we properly assess their threat level.'
