I try to start up a conversation with him "Oh, are you? Wait, yes, it is definitely you. Sorry to interrupt your breakfast, but I just want to say what a big fan I am. I have always dreamed of one day becoming a great adventurer like you. Do you have any advice or pointers?"
Just in case I need to do a roll, the following is a straight d20 roll (my bonus to insight is +7, investigation +1, perception +5 and persuasion is +7 if any of those are relevant):
Volo turns over to look at you, swallows the food that was in his mouth, washes it down with his drink, and says,
"Well met! Hello, you're an adventurer?" He says, putting out his hand, "I'm Volothamp Geddarm, but you already know that! Advice?"
He picks up a book that was to his right, "This is my latest book. It has more advice than I could say. I could tell you some stories, they could help advise you. Where's your party?"

I point at the table of people I have just met and who definitely have not agreed to be in an adventuring party with me and say “that fine band of misfits over there are the best and most trustworthy amateur adventuring party I’ve met" and not very subtlety shout-whisper to the table "new-friends, come over here THIS IS VOLO, yes THE VOLO".
Seeing that the Firbolg either didn't hear or understand him, Rinzak shrugs a bit as he turns to look over the rest of the crowd. Seeing the odd elf point out the group and claim to be together in an adventuring party Rinzak raises an eyebrow, saying "I do not know who or what a Volo, or a The Volo is. Nor who you are, though pending further conversation and I believe in your culture it is customary to exchange refreshments and nourishment, that could change." A rather bland, straight to the point tone to his voice.
Turning to tall creature of which race he is not familiar, the gnome addresses Rinzak. “You are in good company. I do not know of this Volo either, but then again, I’ve been in seclusion for awhile, so there are undoubtedly a lot of heroes and famous folk whose stories have not reached my ears.”
”And no worries, my tall friend here may have heard you, but he doesn’t talk much. His name is Ram, and I am called Zook. Who might you be, good sir?”
Rinzak turns back, glancing down and having a moment of processing what he was looking at before saying "Ah yes, a Geh-nome correct? I am called Rinzak, and I am not offended. Many on this plane have reacted much more rudely when I have attempted to engage them." After a moment of thought he holds out his hand a bit stiffly, his long thin fingers extended as he looks over the Gnome a bit curiously "A handshake is often customary after introductions yes?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Fen laughs nervously, turns to Volo and says "They jest of course", turns to the table and says "of course we know who the great adventurer Volo is, he who chronicles [cough]treasure and [cough] [cough]magical items. Oh, also monsters, exotic regions and other things as well."
He shoots a look at the people he just met, trying to convey that they should go along with the ruse/white-lie "did I mention his books on treasure and magical items?"

If deception is needed instead for Volo, deduct 2 from the above.
Hecate finally closes her book and introduces herself to Volo. "Hecate. Your exploits are well known to me, and I have long studied your writings on the undead. It is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance."
Ventheris will speak up from behind the group, "I've heard many tales of the wise Volo from the caravans that passed through. It seems the bar doesn't have enough room for everyone to join you there, so perhaps we could move our tables together and ask Sir Volo to join us and regale us with his wisdom, perhaps even give us a glimpse of his new book? Or better yet, tell us about his next great work, because as we all know, a master's work is never finished."
As he watches the situation unfold, Zook's attention is pulled between the Gith fellow that he's talking to and the excitement surrounding this charismatic "hero," who's commanding the heightened regard of nearly everyone else in the room.
"Well met, Master Rinzak. Yes, I am a gnome," he says, extending his hand, "as is she," he says, pointing to Carlin. "However, we are... you could say cousins. I am a gnome of the forest. We are slightly smaller folk than many other people of our kind. You could say that we are the same, but different. Or, perhaps different, but the same."
"May I ask... what are you, Rinzak, and where do you hail from? I confess, I have never seen a man of your stature before."
Then, turning his attention back to the growing crowd that's gathered around Volo, Zook stands up onto the table to get a better look.
"I should say, this Volo person seems to be attracting quite a crowd, I am certainly curious as to who he might be and what deeds have earned him such fame amongst the people. I have read many books, but I have never read books that were written by him, though, for I am intrigued by chronicles of exotic places, monsters and magical items."
Ramath looks to the being introduced as Rinzak, then turns back to Zook. He says something in Giant, which sounds like a mix between a grunt and a moan to everyone else.
Volo says to you all, after taking in the crowd, "Well met, adventurers! This elf here, what's your name, tells me that you are not a member of a party? I am Volothamp Geddarm! The fine adventurer/writer/wizard, if I do say so myself. I was lead to believe that you were looking for stories of adventure, and possible quests, am I right?"

"I cannot speak for the others," Hecate replies, "But as for myself, I am an investigator of the supernatural, the events that transcend the grave. I have come to Waterdeep in hopes of furthering my research."
Fen says "I can’t speak for everyone" then kinda does anyway "We would be crazy not to listen to THE GREAT VOLO’s tales of adventures and any quests that he would deem worthy of sharing with us."
Rinzak tilts his head a bit curiously at the way that Zook pronounces the word. "Why is there a G in the word if it is not pronounced? Common is so odd. I am a Githzerai, hailing from Limbo." Though while he is speaking the Githzerai glances over in the elf's direction, he gives a bit of a shake of his head and turns back to the gnome. Raising an eyebrow curiously at the odd language that Ramath spoke but does not press, giving a slight shrug of his shoulders "I am here to expand my knowledge and expertise in my craft. If this Volo can help, then he may indeed be one to speak to."

Ramath seems confused. He doesn’t know who Volo is.
