Wash is dwarfed by Balassar and does not bear any visible battle scars, though his unflappable demeanour suggests he is not unfamiliar with danger.
Wash shakes Balassar’s hand and eagerly says "It is a pleasure to meet you properly. I know that I introduced myself as Dr Sal Washburn, but you can call me Wash. I’d love to join you for a drink, I was heading to the Ironheart’s Rest myself, but if you’d like to head to somewhere livelier like The Blushing Tankard, I can be convinced. This is my last volunteer shift for a bit, so I’ve got nothing to do tomorrow morn."

Alton shakes his head, making the topknot bounce, "No, this is my first time to Hupperdook too. I'm from the Felderwin Tillage, that is south from here. Though I have heard stories of Hupperdook, so I decided this would be my first stop on my road to adventure." Alton gives Cala a big smile that makes his face wrinkle all up, but doesn't push her for more information. Some people just get nervous meeting new people, so Alton has been told numerous times.
When stopped at the gate, Alton takes a look at the gnome while searching his pockets, "They call me Alton Wildcloak and I'm an aspiring traveling entertainer. I like to collect and tell stories and I figured this would be my first stop." He gives an innocent smile and shrugs, "In all of my excitement to hit the road, I must have left any documents back home. If you let me pass, I'll happily add you into the story of my adventures."
Alton, the guard looks at you warily. Just make sure you behave yourself, Alton. I know there's stories of Hupperdook, but that doesn't mean there's licence to do whatever. Now go about your business.
Cala, the guard looks at your letter in confusion. No need to papers, Ms... Carrow. Hmmm. She seems to think for a moment, but decides against saying it out loud. Well, welcome to Hupperdook. If you take my advice, you'll head through Ironlot Streets to get a view of the town, and then off to the winch to get to Upper Hupperdook. There's plenty of good places to stay. She eyes the sun, now sinking a little lower in the sky. Best get to it quick. Things get a little wild after sundown, though you might enjoy that more I suppose.
The guards wave you through, and you follow the main street into Ironlot Streets and towards the mountain. There are no obvious places to stay and rest for the night, though you pass the odd tavern and plenty of shops, workshops and small traders; even a few tiny street markets, nothing more than a half-dozen stalls that seem to move through the day.
Up ahead, you see a fork in the road. To one side, you see a cheap tavern, the 'Ironheart's Rest', with a human and dragonborn engaged in conversation on the doorstep.
Balassar and Wash, the streets are getting quiet; people are busy at work, getting the last of the daylight hours before the sun sets and the familiar revelries begin; this is not news to you, as you've both been in Hupperdook for a while. The transition from hard work to hard play can still be a little overpowering at time. As you approach the Ironheart's Rest you see a few people walking up and down the street, but not many. A half-elf and halfling come close, and seem about to pass by.
The peace of the afternoon is shattered by the deafening crack of a massive explosion that rocks the southeast part of the city. At the base of the mountain, shards of rock spray the street a hundred yards from where you stand. Heavy smoke billows from a cavernous hole in the mountain wall. As you shake the ringing from your ears, six cloaked figures appear in the street, running from the source of the explosion—and charging straight toward you!
Wash, you see no evidence of the injured. The cloaked and running figures seem not to be injured, and the smoke obscures the place they're running from.
(OOC: We may come to initiative, but it's up to you and how you all react... :) )

Cala looks a little startled, quickly stuffing her documents back into her cloak. She steps to the side, hesitant to do anything. As she waits to see how those around her will react, her eyes focus in on the group of figures. Do they look familiar in any way? Does anything on then suggest that they are who caused the explosion?
Wash instinctively summons an invisible ball of force into one of his hands, but does not release. He thanks the fates that no-one was injured.
[Eldritch blast readied, will only release if one of the cloaked figures attacks someone (townsfolk or PCs) or shows themselves to be a threat. Otherwise Wash will try to ‘tail’ the cloaked figures after they pass].

"Talk about starting a night with a bang." Alton watches the cloaked figures not sure what to really make of the situation and a little overwhelmed by it all. Noticing they are heading in his general direction, Alton will use this to try and get a look at their features maybe spot some distinctive markings that he can use for villain's in his stories.
Alton, you see that one figure is much larger than the others, perhaps a dragonborn or goliath. The other five are smaller, perhaps gnomes or halflings. However, they are well hidden and you do not see their faces.
Cala, there is nothing to suggest that they caused the explosion, other than the guilt-by-association of the fact that they are running away from it. And they certainly don't look familiar to you.
You see townsfolk peeking from windows or behind street corners where they have taken cover, but none step out to interfere so far.
The six figures are now drawing close to you and will shortly pass you all by. Balassar and Wash, you are somewhat out of the way near the door to the tavern, but Cala and Alton, you are in the middle of the street, and you are the only ones in the middle of the street. The larger figure is barreling towards you, though swerving slightly to avoid you - it doesn't look like they're charging you directly.
I shoot Balassar a ‘should we check this out’ look and then start heading in the same direction that the cloaked figures are currently travelling. I start moving before they pass us by, so it is not as obvious that I am following them. I dart between people, carts etc. trying to be stealthy.
[OOC: I’m trying to be stealthy in a movie "follow that car" kind of way, not rogue-trying-to-blend-into-shadows way].
Balassar just nods as he draws his shield and weapon "Guess the ale will wait." he says as he steps out into the street waiting to see who the enemy is.
Balassar, as you draw your weapon, you hear one of the small racing figures cry out, in draconic: No witnesses!
Everyone roll initiative please.
(OOC: I can keep Wash's initiative roll from above, no need to roll again. Of course, moving into initiative doesn't always mean you have to start fighting, it just means that movement and time are important and need to be measured carefully.)
The large cloaked figure L is in the lead. The five smaller figures follow, arriving from the west (right side of the map) and seeming to be headed east (to the right side of the map). Balassar and Wash stand by the entrance to a tavern, and Cala and Alton in the middle of the street.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Cala looks bit frightened, but she reached back and quickly draws her spear out of its bindings, though keeps it held at her side. She does not want to be the one to initiate combat.
[OOC: Good to see we are not a bunch of murder hobos. Because Wash doesn't understand Draconic, he wont have taken the "No witnesses!" call as a threat, but will release his Eldritch Blast at any of the cloaked figures if they attack anyone, and importantly he will keep an eye out for anyone being injured and try to help them (PC or NPC).]

Alton seeing others getting ready for a fight, pulls the rapier from its scabbard and gets ready. "Not even into the first tavern and we are already in a fight. And here I was actually going to try and behave." Seeing Cala a little unsettled Alton says to her, "Just think this could be the start of a grand adventure. It is time to get excited!"
Initiative: 15 Bardic Inspiration to Cala, if DM allows.

(OOC: No bardic inspiration yet, but you can do that in the first round if you wish. I still can't see dice rolls unfortunately, but based on the red of that initiative roll, and Alton's DEX modifier, that was a natural roll, so Alton can re-roll - that's the halfling luck feature.)
