"You were right, he had nothing to share about the road ahead or any other threats. Just bandits."
"Don't sound so glum," Briferhew says, "That means he and his companions aren't linked to any other dangers on the road. We'll tote him back to Baldur's Gate on our return for the Black Fist to handle, so your caution at least allows him to live to see it."
When Merric winks at the guard, the scorn in their face increases. Carlon grunts and nods, moving to caution Jamna as well.
For Karib:
"Bah, just like me wife with these spells and all their damned rules. Durn it, how many words is that? There's a roadhouse they took--"
The connection to Mathon cuts off suddenly again.
A chill rain washes over the area the next afternoon, lasting throughout the evening before finally relenting in the midst of the night, leaving both parties damp and feeling unpleasant. The inclement weather seems to have a similar effect on any threats that may be lurking in the area too, however, and another day and night pass by without event.
Rogram closes his eyes and smacks his head when Karib tells him his Pa's second response. But he's smiling. The half-dwarf sighs good-heartedly. "I guess we can try again?" he asks. He continues to have a spring in his step, despite the rain. Though the spring is less by the end of the day.
When it's time to set up camp, Rogram decides to work on his swordplay. Despite the rain and the mud, he spends about 30 minutes working on his technique. All the while, his mind is mulling over their present situation and how glad he is to know his Pa is OK.
Karib draws a deep breath and shakes his head, "Now I know where you get it from -- if there was ever any doubt! The man does not know when to listen, when to think, and when to look beyond the end of his nose."
"Gond give me patience," he says before drawing another deep breath and shaking his head to clear it.
He smiles weakly at Rogram, "Sorry lad, I will keep trying but I think we need to check in with the others, eh?"
Bearing in mind Mathon's difficulty, Karib resolves to make sure of his own choices. Mathon has likely never seen the spell used before, so it would likely take some time for him to understand.
Taking a stick from the fire, he writes words in the dirt, erasing some, rewriting others, working slowly and methodically until he is satisfied. Then, focusing again on the small copper wire, Karib reaches out through Gond to Merric.
"Karib here. You can reply in 25 words. Think before responding. Consider words. Mathon lives. So do we. Lizardfolk on road. Seeking more information."
When he is done, he slowly and methodically erases the words in the dirt.
Rogram scowls at Karib's words. He doesn't like the man saying such negative things about his Pa. If he didn't think so highly of Karib, Rogram might feel the need to argue the point — perhaps with his fists.
His Pa is very intelligent, and he always listens! Well, maybe not to Rogram. That's one of the reasons he is so frustrated with his Pa. He never listens! And he does have to concede that he's heard others in Greenest express that it's hard to change Mathon's mind once it's made up. His mother certain fussed about that! He even overheard someone asking his Pa to stop attending town meetings because they were tired of all the arguing.
Rogram smiles, thinking about how good it's going to be to see his Pa again.
Scratching away the message in the dirt, Karib notices that what's left of the message seems to be shifting and moving ever so slightly. Rogram and Akira's shouts of attention bring him to realize that he feels a tremor in the earth, standing and spinning to see a pair of hulking ogres that has spotted the campsite and charged. The creatures wear filthy hide armor and brandish javelins and greatclubs almost as large as any of the trio they are charging toward.
Round 1 Order: Akira, Karib and Rogram <===== Ogres
Placement: All combatants are within movement range of one another.
OOC: You've definitely rested, I just got this post out with 2 minutes to spare before I had to leave today. Don't worry about that, I'll get the sheets all fixed up
Rogram watches with large eyes as the ogres charge forward. "Big ..." the half-dwarf says quietly in awe. At almost the same time as Akira, Rogram also decides to cast a spell. He reaches into his component pouch before speaking a quick incantation while waving his arms in a grand gesture.
Flames leap up at the feet of the slowest of the ogres, as a glowing forge hammer appears in front of it, swinging brutally towards it. At the same time Karib moves forward, trying to position himself for an opportunity attack if the Ogre moves out of the flames, and as far away as possible from the other ogre.
He smiles at Rogram, "You are full of surprises, lad!"
OOC: A couple days have passed between battles for this group, so in my mind Karib had only used one 3rd level spell to contact Merric (meaning the contact with Mathon was technically the previous day, unless you do want both spell slots to be used at the onset of battle, just let me know).
Rushing headlong into Akira's flames, one of the ogres cries out, "Mages!". The shout comes out deeper and slower than it began as Rogram's magic takes effect on the creature, whose slowed legs cannot move it out of the way of Karib's fire or his spiritual weapon, which bashes its jaw. Furious, the ogre slams its greatclub headlong into Karib's chest, sending the cleric backward several feet from the impact. The bonfire beneath its feet flickers out, and its companion launches a javelin across the way at Rogram. Paying no mind as it soars well above the bard, the ogre charges at Akira instead, growling, "No more burning!"
Round 2 Order: Akira, Karib & Rogram <===== Ogres
Placement: One ogre is engaged in melee combat with Akira. One ogre is engaged in melee combat with Karib.
Health: The ogre fighting Karib is wounded. The ogre fighting Akira is lightly wounded.
Rogram is momentarily frustrated that his spell only caught one of the giants, but a grin appears in response to Karib's comment. He draws his sword and moves forward to jab at the ogre advancing on Akira — getting between them if he can manage.
Attack: 10
Despite the ogre's immense size, the half-dwarf swings wide, missing the creature entirely!
The moment of hesitation is all Karib needs. The ogre, backing away from the painful sound of the bell ringing throughout its body, forgets all about the glowing hammer that caves in the back of its skull, sending it toppling to the ground. Its companion, focused on avoiding Rogram's strike, suddenly lifts off of the ground, hovering twenty feet in the air. Spinning around and seeing Akira's focus, the massive creature bellows, "Let me down, mage!" Despite the javelin that nearly skewers her from above, Akira maintains her concentration, keeping the ogre aloft, an easy target.
Round 3 Order: Akira, Karib & Rogram <===== Ogres
Placement: The remaining ogre is levitating 20 feet in the air.
Karib watches as the ogre collapses and lets the fire die as he turns his attention to the remaining ogre.
Moving towards Akira he raises his shield and places himself between the ogre and the mage, trying to provide cover in case the ogre has more missiles to throw. The fiery hammer follows him, striking at the ogre followed rapidly by the peel of another bell.
"That is for striking my friend. Now, tell us why we should let you down, before you suffer the same fate as your companion."
While he's never been keen on the murdering of prisoners -- and the Ogre seems more like a prisoner than an active combatant -- he has little doubt that, were their positions reversed, there would be no mercy.
BA: Attack: 23; Damage: 9
Toll the dead Wis 16 or take 15 necrotic (I have assumed first attack hit)
Rogram feels his magic dissipate as the slowed ogre collapses. Still, he holds out his sword at the floating creature threateningly. He has his crossbow and a few javelins, but Karib's words hold him back. Perhaps they can get away with only killing one of these creatures tonight. After all, everyone needs to eat.
"Graaaaah, filthy, stinking mages!" the ogre snarls as its life force is assaulted by Karib. It launches another javelin downward, this time at the cleric, which lands a foot or so to the side, burying several inches into the ground from the force. "I kill you! I eat you!" it continues to shout.
Round 4 Order: Akira, Karib & Rogram <===== Ogres
Placement: The remaining ogre is levitating 20 feet in the air.
Health: The remaining ogre is wounded.
Akira is lightly wounded.
