The miners slam into the goblins who are caught completely unawares. With chains pickaxes and sometimes bare hands they attack the goblins.in a bloody melee
Though struck by surprise the Goblins rally to their leaders and begin to return the slaughter.
Herne sights his crossbow on the huge glowing plant thing. His heavy quarrel sinks fully into the soft skin, disappearing completely.
Syr Cygnus will cast Shield of Faith on herself. A shimmering field appears and surrounds her. She then quickly casts Hunter's Mark on that 'thing' center stage in front of Belthran.
Book will stay close to Pepsi towards the back of the party with Light cast on a simple copper piece, ready to be tucked into a pocket if stealth is required.
Kursk will charge in alongside the miners, letting out a bellowing roar as he flies into a rage.
The Gnolls standing in formation instantly become involved as the cries of pain and scent of blood alert them. One group sees Krusk charging the center and they rush to be the first to claim his head. The pack leader is the only one that can reach Krusk but his attacks with his great glaive are repulsed by the Raging half-orc!
For the moment, the Wolves do not seem to be interested in involving themselves in the festivities.
Using cover, darkness and shadow, Alaric and Sandow move out to go rescue Belthran.
Round 2 The miners continue their attack. However, the Humanoids are beginning to react in earnest. Pick axe and scimitar meet throughout the cavern, and the Goblins are holding their own. Herne reloads his cross bow and shoots the plant imbedding another quarrel into it. Cygnus moves trying to get a clear shot at at something she’s not sur of but now sees that the spot she had thought she say the thing is now empty. In Frustration she hurls her javelin at the giant plant. The javelin hits and sinks into the plant. Book climbs the rubble and rocks to give himself a heightened position from whence he can see all of the combatants. Pepsi follows with crossbow at the ready. Krusk attacks a Gnoll leader but despite his rage he misses. The gnolls begin to spread out and attack the miners. The wolves appear to be entering the fray leaving their places in the dark cavern. Alaric and Sandow continue their stealthy advance. End of Round 2
Round 3 The miners surprise has passed and now they begin to suffer the consequences of attacking their warrior-bred foes. Many of the miners perish.
The Goblins seem to mass over an entire section of attacking miners however, in some ways their great numbers impede them. Even so the remaining miners see the ferocity that began this entire ordeal. One goblin even scores a telling blow on the armored form of the Lady Syr (Natural “20”), feeding his dark blade with Paladin blood.
Herne reloads his crossbow and shoots the plant imbedding another quarrel into it.
As she begins to advance, Syr feels a sharp pain as the point of a Goblin blade finds a chink in her armor and stabs deeply into her thigh. The paladin’s natural reaction kicks in and she swings out with her morningstar and smashes the Goblins skull to a bloody pulp. She then notices a group of the humanoids charging her flank.
As book ascends the top of the rocks, he spies a clear line of fire he conjures and sends a glowing stream of green colored acid into the masse Gnolls and Goblins. He kills one Goblin outright and sends another one-off howling in excruciating pain.
Krusk strikes at the leader of the Gnolls, smashing the war-leader over and over with his chain flail. As he hits the Gnoll, Krusk bellows out another war cry in mindless fury!
The Gnolls on one side of the cavern retreat in panic as they see one of their brothers covered in shimmering acid and rolling on the ground in unspeakable fury. Gnoss warleader in combat with the Orc Berserker has no idea of this as he is busy trying to survive the onslaught of Krusk and his chain flail. The Gnoll does manage to cut the Orc with his glaive, but the damage is inconsequential to the great Orc. Th Gnolls on the other side of the cavern are apparently hemmed in by the swirling tide of goblins seeking to kill the miners who had the audacity to spoil their celebration.
The wolves stay clear of the fray for the moment.
Alaric and Sandow are moving nicely around the swirling battle, however Alaric’s new found confidence in his talent for sneaking causes him to increase his pace to get to Belthran quicker. The lapse in judgment has its consequences as he is spotted by the other Gnoll warlord who shouts alarm to his command. They turn towards the Nobleman and Rogue.
The Miners still hold their own, even with greatly reduced numbers. Many of the miners are wounded, dying, or dead.
The Goblins attack viciously, some even charging the Paladin, but her armor and Holy protections keep their brittle blades from landing a single blow.
Herne reloads his crossbow and shoots the plant imbedding another quarrel into it.
Book once again adjusts position and sends another strea of acid down from his position, literally melting a line of goblins
Krusk continues his assault on the gnoll commander and flails the beast with repeated blows.
The Gnoll that suffered the acid burn takes more damage as it rolls around on the ground in agony and then finally dies. The other gnolls switch from spear and shield to bow and shoot at the Mage. One arrow strikes the Mages magical shiel protection but the othe wo get through causing greivous dameage to the Mage but he is still standing.
The wolves stay clear of the fray for the moment.
Alaric suffers the glaive slice with stoic reserve and initiates an “Air of nobility” that forces lesser beings to busy themselves and ignore the Nobleman’s passing, However the Gnoll war-chief is a noble amongst his own people and the effect fails to affect him. He strikes Alaric once again. Alaric tosses a small pouch at the Gnoll which explodes knocking several of the gnolls, including his adversary off of their feet and covering them and the area in a greasy oily substance.
Sandow faces two of the gnolls but his rapier strikes miss as one of his opponents collapses in the GREASE.
The miners are suffering badly in this fight. They are brave and inspired but they just lack skill in combat. Though more are arriving slowly to try and bolster their numbers.
The Goblins are fighting fiercely, but they too are losing ground to the Miners and the Group of heroes aiding them. Several goblins attempt to swarm the paladin but between her skill, her Armor, and the protection afforded by her faith she brushes the Goblins off like flies.
Herne the hunter sees the Goblins attack the young warrior woman and he fires at one of her attackers killing it instantly with a razor-sharp quarrel to its head.
The Goblins are proving harder to hit than anticipated. She swings and misses as the goblins begin to track her fighting style.
Book steps 5ft diagonally to his left, right in front of Pepsi and casts his caustic brew straight "south." The Gnoll warleader somehow dodges it but is covers two of the charging goblins almost killing them. Pepsi draws his shortbow and strikes a telling strike on one of the Gnolls that are shooting at Book.
Krusk continues his vicious attack on the Gnoll leader, the links of Krusks chain are becoming slippery with gnoll blood.
Gnoll archers score hits on both Book and Pepsi. The two are wounded but still up. On the other side several Gnolls are stuck in the grease from Alaric’s grease bomb. The one gnoll attacking Sandow is unable to get past the Rogues defenses.
Alaric makes it to The Goliath and using his “smelling salts” (form of curing spell). Belthran awakens. Quietly Alaric apprises the Bard of the situation and of the Old shaman type female Goblin and her wolf guardians. Alaric uses his dagger to cut Belthran’s Bonds. Belthran is free but still lying still on the slab.
Sandow’s blade is still a whirling shield of steel that the gnoll is unable to penetrate.
As new miners arrive from the lower levels to join the battle, those observing can see the tables turning yet again in the ebb and flow of battle as the Goblin dead begin to mount.
The Goblins are now taking the brunt of the battle. many are dead, yet still hey fight on.
Herne switches from his crossbow to hand axe and hunting knife. Stabbing and slashing into a Goblin on Syr’s flank, killing it instantly.
Cygnus meanwhile uses her mace to fight off a pesky Goblin, but it still evades her blow.
With a snap of his fingers and a deft slide, Book disappears for an instant and reappears, briefly surrounded by silvery mist. He raises two fingers and another spray of green acid shoots from his hand catching a gnoll full in the face. The gnoll behind the first manages to avoid the spray. And as the first gnoll is writhing on the ground an arrow from Pepsi puts he creature out of its misery.
Krusk manages to parry shaft of the red glowing glaive and bring his chain down hard on the Gnoll chieftain’s skull, splattering bone, and brains everywhere in a 10-foot radius!
The Gnolls facing book all split one running away and the other surviving Gnoll shooting his bow at the Mage but his shot going high and wide. The other Gnolls in the cave were either stuck in Alaric’s greased floor or in combat with Miners and Sandow.
Alaric tells Belthran to not move suddenly and draw attention. Alaric will then duck down behind the stone table and spend his entire action crafting an IED using 2 vials of Ankheg acid tied to a ceramic flask of gunpowder (He'll keep a small amount of gunpowder to himself in a separate container). He will cut a small bit of rope for a fuse and will try his mending cantrip to seal everything up.
Sandow deftly keeps the two gnoll opponents in melee combat giving Alaric precious seconds.
Heeding Alaric's advice - at least to some degree - Belthan confers combat inspiration on Alaric and casts dissonant whispers on one of the back rank. The result is it hits the Goblin leader and he runs away holding his head screaming. End of round 6.
The miners continue the assault. Their numbers tipping the scale in their favor.
Those Goblins who are able begin to flee the rest are resigned to fight on.
Herne sees Sandow across the cavern being met by two gnolls he takes a shot with his crossbow and wings one of them.
Cygnus Syr Cygnus continues smacking away at the foes in front of her. “Tyr take you!” But her combat style is ineffective against one of the Goblin leaders who simply dodges her mighty blows.
Book steps to his left 5 feet and send Tasha's Caustic Brew towards the gnoll that did not run, as he yells "You should've run!" his opponent takes a full stream directly in the face. The howl of pain from the Gnoll echoes through the cavern.
Krusk lets out a roar of triumph finally taking down the gnoll, and picks its glaive up as his trophy, whacking any gobbos in range as he tries to maneuver to have the most enemies within range of his new toy. His first swing of the remarkably balanced weapon slices a Goblin in two!
The surviving Gnolls are a mess the leader is totally incapacitated by the grease bomb, the one facing book is writhing in the ground covered in acid, and the two facing Sandow cannot pierce through the rogues bladesmanship. Only the one surrounded by miners has any success in combat.
The Witch and her wolves head to the entrance, trying their best not to be noticed and escape the cavern.
Alaric lights and tosses the bomb over at the wolves. Centered on the goblin-witch. the device lands at the feet of the witch and explodes killing her and two wolves outright and injuring one other wolf.
Seeing that Alaric and his charge are clear, Sandow takes his free disengage action to remove himself from melee with one of his foes, then focus his attack on one that he's still engaged with but misses his strike.
Belthran cast shatter at the Gnolls centered on their leader. The area above them rocks and vibrates with the thunder that is unleashed and literally everyone stops as the cavern shakes in response- then combat resumes.
With their increased numbers the miners kill all of the goblins they can find The surviving miners see the Paladin facing off against the last goblin leader. They cheer her on as they form a ring around her and her foe.
All the Goblins are dead. The goblin leader deals Syr Cygnus two wicked slashing blows to her legs slicing an artery and hindering her badly. He quickly uses her wounding to escape the area (Nimble Escape).
Herne takes aim again with his crossbow and kills one of the Gnolls that Sandow is holding off.
Syr Cygnus redoubles her efforts to smite the foul foe with furious fervor. But misses as the Goblin gets away.
Book once again uses his Acid spell targeting the surviving wolf, but the huge canine manages to avoid it as it heads out the cavern.
Krusk spears he remaining wolf with his glaive and raises it above his head in fury!
He final Gnoll leader escapes from the Greased area and runs full tilt to escape the cavern.
Syr Cygnus will use 'Lay on Hands' to regain 10 htpts, saving five should any of the others really need them. "Who needs aid? Belthran, how fair ye?" She looks around at the carnage, a sorrowful rage filling her heart at the great number of dead miners. To the living she says, "Ah, ye fought mightily my friends, though many have perish, know that they will be remembered in their brave courage in the hall of Tyr." She will go to each and every miner who was felled in the battle, blessing each body and thanking their spirit for their valor and sacrifice.
