(As is often the case im going to have to disregard Sage advice in this case, and rule based on the wording in the PHB.
"You choose when to take a bonus action during your turn, unless the bonus action's timing is specified, and anything that deprives you of your ability to take actions also prevents you from taking a bonus action." -PHB
If for example you are a monk and you use a ki point to finish off a weak for with Flurry of Blows then go on to attack a new enemy with your weapon, thats totally OK. However by using that bonus action you are unable to use a different action after.
If Keygella were to use her bonus action to shovee an enemy off a cliff and then go to attack, (if th shove failed,) and the shove succeeded, she would have no target for her attack action, but wouldn't be allowed to then choose a different action. She would simply fail the attack.)
(My interpretation of "if you take the attack action" is that it specifies the timing, you would have to have done so to be able to trigger the bonus action. Lots of bonus actions, like patient defense, cunning action, etc don't need a trigger, so the handbook makes it clear you can do those whenever. But you're the DM, mostly just clarifying to make sure I understand how things are being ruled :). In the case of the monk FoB example, you can't actually use FoB first then use the attack on someone else anyway since FoB actually does specifically say *after* using the attack action).
Edit: (Also, gogo consistency in wording between similar abilities. FoB is "after you take the attack action", monk's normal bonus attcak from martial arts is "when you use the attack action", shield master is "if you take the attack action"...)
Polly's superior moves give him an edge that he doesn't hesitate to capitalize on before he disappears into the forest, for real. (Anyone may contest.) Errich is knocked flat in one hit.
Errich tries to dodge but Polly scores a critical hit (not a sneak attack, 13 damage)

(Well, that match is going about how I expected it to.)
(Also, that is terrifying. That's about the damage Og could do reliably with a crit divine smite, and this doesn't even use a spell slot.)
(Not that it matters currently, but still just as terrifying.)
