In theory, could the Staff of Adornment from XGE be used as a ranged weapon?
You can float up to 3 items weighing less than 1lb on the tip of the staff, so would it be feasible to use it to throw stones or crystal shards as ranged attacks? I know this would normally be a DM's discretion decision, but I'd like to know you guys' opinions and whether you'd allow it.
I don’t think the staff of adjournment would work well as a “sling staff”. If you could swing the staff to loose the objects, I don’t see how the objects would stay in place when the staff is used as a melee weapon.
all that being said, it’s a Common magic item, and it’s uses are fairly limited. It still counts as a magic weapon for overcoming potential resistances and immunities. It can be used to have up to 3 extra daggers, acid vials, holy waters, alchemists fire, oil flasks, healing potions, or a torch/lamp floating without having to hold or secure/hold them.
Staff slings are a thing in RL, if not in D&D any more, but given the description on the Staff of Adornment ("While holding the staff, you can make one or more of the objects slowly spin or turn in place.") I would rule the floating objects don't generate enough momentum for it to be effective as a ranged weapon. Trying to swing the staff to fling an object would be no more effective than plucking the object out of the air and throwing it.
Now, if you want to upgrade the staff with a Catapult spell and a few charges, then you're in business.

Can you use the Staff of Adornment as a Ranged Weapon? Sure! You can throw the staff at your target. Improvised Weapon 1d4 damage, unmodified. Take the Tavern Brawler feat, you can be proficient in doing this. Sadly the magic of the staff will pretty much prevent the little floaty things around the staff from doing any damage. At least I think so. I'm almost always wrong in one way or the other.

The OP is referring to throwing the floating items, not the staff itself but i like the look of it!☺
Id let you do it, but it would have no benefit over just throwing the rock (other than not needing a free hand I guess).
And proficient with Tavern Brawler, yeah?
Not sure why that would be required.
Wouldn’t it technically be an improvised weapon? Without that feat or some homebrew the PC wouldn’t add PB to the attack roll. (Even for just throwing a rock.)

It would be an improvised weapon. I understand what you were asking now. Yeah, the feat would add proficiency.
Getting there, i find it's a lot of investment for throwing rock when you can use daggers as effectively no?
Maybe you don't have a dagger handy? Maybe you threw them all, already or want to keep them to melee with?
I don't know for you, but i don't take a feat in case these situational circumstances happens so i can add my proficiency bonus to throw rocks! Daggers or darts are generally available at starting level with which you'll be proficient so i'd throw something else if i want to make ranged attack, and save ASI / Feat for something better. Just my 2 cents

yes you can always remove the stone or crystal and make an improvised ranged attack with it.

If you want to have a bunch of magic pebbles floating in your staff tip so that you can throw them at people, go right ahead.
