With Animal Companion in 5e RAW, the list within the Beast Master subclass is different from what I am seeing on other forums. For example, a Pteranodon is on most if not all forum lists as being a good companion. Is a Pteranodon an option for a Animal Companion? The forums had a list of animals with a specific CR and size range.
Next up is Companion's Bond in 5e RAW. It seems like my Animal Companion is boosted with Companion's Bond based on my character level and not my Beast Master's class level. Is that correct? I know it uses my proficiency bonus, but the hit die is more of a focus. "For each level you gain after 3rd, your animal companion gains an additional hit die and increases its hit points accordingly." What does this mean for multiclassing into Beast Master at a higher level? If I'm level 7 cleric and level 3 Beast Master, does my companion gain 7 hit die even though I just got Beast Master at character level 10? Also, "Whenever you gain the Ability Score Improvement class feature, your companion’s abilities also improve." This also seems to be character level focused; so does that mean with the previous example that a level 7 cleric just getting level 3 Beast Master at character level 10 gives ASI boost to the Companion from the previous ASI boost of the Cleric levels? Or do you need to get Beast Master level 3 first, then cleric level 7 at character level 10 so that your Companion gains the ASI boost? Also if you choose a feat, does the companion still get the ASI boost?
So to summarize my questions into one area involving 5e RAW Ranger Beast Master (With an add on question at the end.):
1) Is a Pteranodon an option for a Animal Companion?
2) Is my Animal Companion's hit die and hit points boosted based on my character level?
3) If I gain Beast Master at a later character level than 3 due to Multiclassing, does my Animal Companion still gain the previous hit die and hit point boosts since character level 3?
4) Does my Animal Companion gain ASI bonus if I choose a feat?
5) Does my Animal Companion gain ASI bonus if I gain ASI in another class?
6) If I gain Beast Master after gaining an ASI bonus from another class due to Multiclassing, does my Animal Companion still gain the previous ASI bonuses gained in the other class?
7) If this is Pteranodon stats below, then how does a max proficiency bonus of +6 work with AC and damage? (AC 19 since 13+6? And damage 2d4+1+6 for max damage 15?:
At 3rd level, you gain a beast companion that accompanies you on your adventures and is trained to fight alongside you. Choose a beast that is no larger than Medium and that has a challenge rating of 1/4 or lower. Add your proficiency bonus to the beast’s AC, attack rolls, and damage rolls, as well as to any saving throws and skills it is proficient in. Its hit point maximum equals the hit point number in its stat block or four times your ranger level, whichever is higher. Like any creature, it can spend Hit Dice during a short rest to regain hit points.
The beast obeys your commands as best as it can. It takes its turn on your initiative. On your turn, you can verbally command the beast where to move (no action required by you). You can use your action to verbally command it to take the Attack, Dash, Disengage, or Help action. If you don't issue a command, the beast takes the Dodge action. Once you have the Extra Attack feature, you can make one weapon attack yourself when you command the beast to take the Attack action.
If you are incapacitated or absent, the beast acts on its own, focusing on protecting you and itself. The beast never requires your command to use its reaction, such as when making an opportunity attack.
While traveling through your favored terrain with only the beast, you can move stealthily at a normal pace.
If the beast dies, you can obtain a new companion by spending 8 hours magically bonding with a beast that isn’t hostile to you and that meets the requirements.
The Pteranodon is a medium CR 1/4 Beast, so it is absolutely a valid selection
No, it is based only on your Ranger levels
No, it is based only on your Ranger levels
No, your companion never gets ASIs or feats. I'm not sure where you are getting that idea from.

I think that's right--the feature is a straight addition of your proficiency bonus (which is driven by total character level)
I don't see any feature called "Companion's Bond". Are you using a homebrew version of the class?

You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
1) Yes. It’s a beast, no larger than medium and with a CR no higher than 1/4.
2) No. Here’s how hit points are calculated: “Its hit point maximum equals the hit point number in its stat block or four times your ranger level, whichever is higher.” The text specifies “ranger level.”
3) The animal companion doesn’t gain hit dice. For its HP total, see above.
4) The animal companion doesn’t get ASIs, period.
5) See above.
6) See above.
7) With a proficiency bonus of +6, the pteranodon will have an AC of 19 and damage of 2d4+7, yes.
Yea I looked online at a website, and apparently they had the incorrect information. Nvm, I will just go with Artificer Battle Smith.
Probably the DandD Wiki? Avoid that raging dumpster fire at all costs.
Lol, yep. First time I had this issue.
A good rule of thumb: if it's not on DDB, it's probably wrong.

Flyby. The pteranodon doesn’t provoke an opportunity attack when it flies out of an enemy’s reach.
Bite.Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (2d4 + 1) piercing damage.
Thanks!

I think they’re looking at a homebrew version of the subclass.
