Agreed, and I don't see them getting any love anytime soon. It's up to us, the community to fix that issue. A friend and I are working on a race build up tomorrow. Hopefully, we can accomplish our goal of making them a playable race for 5E games. If it works and I am happy with their design I will 100% add them on this thread. If anyone has any ideas please feel free to share them. Also, when I post them I am down for feedback. I think together we all can make Kalashtar great again. #MKGA

Serandis Mendaen (Aereni Elven Rogue/maybe one day Wizard)- Project Point Playtest
Had a whole sea-faring campaign planned in Eberron for 3.5. I read the Eberron Campaign Setting and Players Guide cover to cover and the first three novels written by the creator of the setting. I was ready.
Then two of our players abstained the campaign into obscurity and everyone lost interest. I would LOVE to rebuild this in 5e and may do it anyways without materials support, but it would be nice to have some rules pre-determined especially for races (the UA article for races just felt lacking and didn't even mention Kalashtar).
TL;DR BRING EBERRON BACK!!! ...Please.
It wasn't hard to build a high seas Eberron game with what is available in 5e. Though I had to pull general setting info from previous editions. While my game began with them being castaways they are nearing their escape from the island they are on and I'm looking forward to seeing how they go about getting a proper ship and crew. Then going after the sunken treasure they lost at the opening of the campaign. I've got ideas for means they can do this. My favorite being an "elemental submarine" being developed by a disgraced, slightly crazy Zil Gnome, who I'm probably going to name Nemo or some variant. Who's going to have some fetching for important components to its creation.
Was Nemo apart of The Trust? Maybe he could be a crazy cold war era type spy who doesn't know that the empire fell...that would be cool...like if he thought The Last War was still raging. Like soldiers on those tiny islands who didn't hear that WWII was over. Keep us updated on your campaign. Sounds like a lot of fun! (High seas adventures are why I play D&D, for real for real... Who doesn't want to find adventure on the open seas?)

So, I think they obviously need to at least decent as Mystics and Monks, so I'd say keep that in mind. I don't think they need to have race features that interact directly with either class' features, though.
in general, I find that 4e race writeups translate more directly and easily to 5e than other editions do, but I don't really like 3.5 or 4e's Kalashtar, in terms of porting to 5e.
I'd give them some sort of telepathy, advantage on pretending to be human, advantage on saves against charm and fear effects, and possession?
I found this write up on a website a little bit ago...I will put the link at the bottom of this post. But this is what they have for a 5e Kalashtar: (I didn't work on mine this weekend but am right now, so I should have that up by the end of the day. It's my birthday present to myself and to all of you. :) )
Kalashtar Traits
As a kalashtar, you have the following racial traits.
Ability Score Adjustment. Your Charisma score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Age. Possibly due either to their ascetic lifestyle or their dual-natured heritage, kalashtar are remarkably long-lived. Maturing at around 70 years of age, many live two centuries or more.
Alignment. Kalashtar are generally lawful good. They combine a sense of self-discipline that borders on the ascetic with a genuine concern for the welfare of all living things, or at least their souls.
Size. Kalashtar range from 5’ 6” to 6’ 6” in height, making their size Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Dual-Natured. As a creature composed of a mortal host and a spirit from the Region of Dreams, you do not dream when you sleep. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or possessed (as by a ghost’s possession attack) and are immune to spells and abilities that require you to dream (such as the dream spell).
Skill Proficiency. You have training in the Insight, Intimidation and Persuasion skills.
Telepathy. Telepathy is a magical ability that allows you to communicate mentally with another creature within 30 feet. The target doesn't need to share a language with you to communicate in this way with it, but it must be able to understand at least one language. A creature without telepathy can receive and respond to telepathic messages but can't initiate or terminate a telepathic conversation.
You don't need to see the target and can end the telepathic contact at any time. The contact is broken as soon as you are no longer within range of each other or if you contact a different creature within range. You can initiate or terminate a telepathic conversation without using an action, but while you are incapacitated, you can't initiate telepathic contact, and any current contact is terminated.
Innate Spellcasting (Psionics). At 3rd level, you can cast the mindlink spell once per day. Once you reach 5th level, you can cast the detect thoughts spell once per day as a 2nd-level spell. You can innately cast these spells, requiring no components. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Language. Kalashtar speak Quor, the language of the quori, and the Common tongue. Quor is a hissing, guttural tongue more suited to the alien forms of the quori than their humanoid hosts. It has its own written form, a flowing, elegant script with many circular letters.
New Spell
Mindlink
1st level enchantment
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S, M (a chain)
Duration: 5 minutes
You forge a telepathic bond with a creature. You can communicate telepathically with a willing creature you can see within range. You don’t need to share a language with the creature for it to understand your telepathic utterances, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language. Once the bond is formed it works over any distance, although not across planar boundaries.
Now, this was made in September 2014. Well, posted then. lol But I kind of like some of the features. I am going to work some of them into my build. The skill proficiencies, dual-natured (just like you said BricingWolf!) and the Telepathy. I am also making two (2) subraces as well. Path of Light Monk and the Psionic Warrior. (I think I need some help naming these lol) I found this nice little race building program and that's what I am using to build the race. I will link that below. Sorry, I really wanted to have this done over the weekend but to be very honest, laziness is a hell of a drug! :P I also found this build as well. I will also post a link to this page too.
Kalashtar Traits
Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2 and your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Age. Kalashtar reach adulthood around the same time as humans but can live to be 200 years old.
Alignment. Kalashtar are good-hearted and community-oriented so they tend to be lawful good.
Size. Kalashtar have the height and build of humans. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Bastion of Mental Clarity. You have advantage on saving throws against spells of the illusion school of magic.
Mental Might. You have advantage on saving throws against charm effects.
Subtle Psychic. Choose one of the following skills: Deception, Intimidation, or Persuasion. You are proficient in that skill.
Telepathy. You can communicate telepathically with any creature within 60 feet of you that understands a language.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.

I like the second one. The first one gets way too much stuff. The spells, telepathy, and skill profs is just...you could power two races with all that.
Second one, though, thumbs up. I might consider giving them a Talent from the Mystic, their choice, and dropping one or two of the skill proficiencies, but otherwise cool. I'd use it.
Okay, I don't think you'll be a fan of the one I built. But that's why I am sharing it so we can build it together in the community and tweak it for use and playtest. I do like your idea (BricingWolf) of giving one Talent of the player's choice, maybe that is something we can tweak into this race.
Now, in creating this build I had the thought process that there are Kalashtar and that they do indeed have subraces. So, with that in mind, I built the base race first and then the subraces. I also took a lot of inspiration from the first introduction of this race, in 3.5's Eberron Campaign Setting. A lot of these abilities cross over with the first race that bore the Kalashtar. I cherry picked from both these race builds I posted earlier, so credit where credit is due. Were it not for these two races I would have stumbled a little more than I did. So, here it is:
Kalashtar
Ability Score Increase: Int +1, Cha +1
Dual-Natured: As a creature composed of a mortal host and a spirit from the Realm of Dreams, you do not dream when you sleep. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or possessed. And, you are immune to spells and abilities that require you to dream.
Skillful Psychic: Choose one of the following skills; Deception, Intimidation or Persuasion. You are proficient in that skill
Telepathy: You can communicate with any creature withing 60 feet of you, as long as they can understand a language.
Psionic Mind: Kalashtar are born with innate psionic talent. With this, you have 2 psi points at first level, whether you take a psionic class or not.
Languages: Common and Quor
Subraces-
Path of Light Monk:
Ability Score Increase: Dex +1, Int +1
Traits: Peace of Mind- As a bonus action, you can cause the forces of your mind to rest in the sea of tranquility. In doing so you can have one attack roll against you be rolled with disadvantage. You can use this ability once, then you must take a short or long rest.
Skill Proficiencies: History
Weapon Proficiency: Quarterstaff
Psychic Warrior:
Ability Score Increase: Con +1, Int +1
Traits: The Wraith of Spirit- You let the ether of your mind enrage, making your attack more powerful. With this ability, you roll one attack at advangtage. You can use this ability once, then you must take a short or long rest.

I think this is a good start. Again, though, it is too powerful, or rather the first subrace is.
For one thing, the race should have a total of +3 to stats, and you've given it +4 (2 from base race, 2 from subrace). That in itself is enough to require fewer other traits. I'd ditch the +int in the subraces, so each subrace is just +1[stat].
Next, looking at the psi points, what does this actually do? No feature lets them use the psi points to do anything. If this is going to be a feature, I'd either have the subrace features cost psi points, or add that the character learns 1 mystic Discipline of their choice.
I suggested talents earlier, because the Talents are a bit easier to balance, and they don't require adding psi points to the race. If you want to go with having psi points after all, gotta give them specific things to use them on. Basically, psi points and a discipline is like Drow Magic, while a Talent is like High Elf's cantrip.
Overall, try to review the PHB races and take note of how many features they have, how many have skill proficiency, etc.

BricingWolf is very on point with his comments. In addition, a few things:
There is no requirement that kalashtar needs multiple subraces (see tiefling). If subraces are required, I would recommend one with a Charisma increase ("Kalashtar are masters of social interaction" ECS 18) and one with an Intelligence increase (as a more effective mystic), on top of the Intelligence and Charisma score increases from the "base" race.
Immunity to spells such as dream. Listing the spells will alleviate arguments at the table.
Naturally Psionic could gain the kalashtar a psionic talent instead of psi point. Psionic talents are based on Intelligence score.
Every class receives the quarterstaff as a weapon proficiency, this ability is redundant.
Mindlink instead of Telepathy if you are sticking to the original nomeclature. The original range is 30 feet.
Kalashtar seek perfection of mind and spirit, a racial trait that reflects this--advantage on an Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma roll; ability to reroll a saving throw; etc.--would be a good way to give your kalashtar a power that sets them apart. This would replace Peace of Mind or Wraith (Wrath?) of Spirit above. Kalashtar are inclined towards madness (ECS 17) and you could base an ability off that.
Personally, I think that to stay true to the lore of them being psionicists and monks we should drop the Charisma boost and consider giving them Intelligence and Wisdom. My gut instinct is to give them a similar treatment as Mountain Dwarves.
Kalashtar
Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 2 and your Wisdom score increases by 2.
Dual Natured. As a creature composed of a mortal host and a spirit from the Realm of Dreams, you do not dream when you sleep. You cannot be affected by spells or effects that require you to dream such as the spell dream. In addition, your connection with a Quori spirit wards you against spells and effects that would cause you to be mystically manipulated or controlled. You have advantage on saving throws to resist being charmed or possessed.
Friend to All. You gain proficiency in the Insight and Persuasion skills. Your proficiency bonus with these skills is doubled against creatures you are in a mindlink with.
Mindlink. As a bonus action on your turn, you may designate one creature you can see within 30 feet and attempt to establish a mental connection with it. The creature senses this attempt and can choose to resist it. If it chooses to resist it must succeed on a Charisma saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier). On a failed save, or if it willingly accepts, you establish the mental connection. You can communicate telepathically with any creature you are connected to in this way, as long as it remains within 30 feet, though you and creatures you're connected to must still share a language in order to understand each other. You can maintain a number of connections equal to your Wisdom modifier at a time.
Naturally Psionic. You have a natural affinity for psionic power. You learn one psionic talent of your choice from those available to Mystics. Intelligence is your Psionic ability for this talent.

Also not a bad go, but there are a couple issues.
Mind-link seems to be more complicated than any other creature with natural telepathy.
Why does this race get a full suite of abilities, and +4 total stat bonuses? One of those needs to be dropped to +1.
Friend To All is probably too much. I would strongly recommend dropping it to 1 skill, or ditching either the double proficiency or ditching prof entirely and replacing it with Advantage in those skills. 1 skill prof + adv when mindlinked could work, but I think it only makes sense if the skill is Insight.

This, by itself, is pretty strong. This is equivalent to the High Elf's extra cantrip. Even if all you had was this, Friend To All, and the +2/+2, this would be a strong race. That's why I say it needs to be +2/+1, and the FTA benefits pared down a little. FTA is really strong.
You raise good points Bricing. After actually doing some research instead of relying on memory I've come to similar conclusions. Will post version 1.01 soon.
Thank you so much for the input and help in building this race. Y'all make a lot if great points and have a lot of great ideas! I guess I never really thought about them having psi points for no reason. That makes a lot sense. Great job, everyone! I will make some changes as well soon. Probably not today because I celebrated a little too much last night for my birthday. lol And I know they don't need a subrace, I just liked the idea of not only there being options but meaning for those options. And dang it, I hate when I misspell wrath. Thanks for pointing that out!!!!

lol nice! I thought about posting an attempt myself, but I will wait to see your next go, first. Between the two of you, I think we're most of the way to a really good write up.

I love this Bricing! It makes much more sense to give advantage to these skills instead of making them proficient. And Henshin, I always say trust your gut. I was thinking it seemed a little OP and I think you're right about that as well. So, let's go with our guts on this one! Palladion, the last point you made is very good. I like that!
I am going to work on my write up today, but maybe we should do a group message and work on it there then post it here for everyone? That way we can exchange our ideas and figure it out together instead of piecemeal until we get it right? Y'all down for that? I want to have this done by next week, I am going to run a couple test games in Eberron and want to have a completed race for the group to choose from. I think great progress has been made so far! Very excited and happy with the feedback and sharing of ideas thus far.
Either way, i am glad I'm not the only one interested in seeing this through. I actually love that I'm not alone on this. D&D Beyond Community for the win! :) So, thank you for all your input and help! Really makes my day when I sign on and see others posting in this thread and about this race that NEEDS to be built, and built right. If Wizards won't do it, then we have to. For the community and others like us who want to use this race.

Hey, I've been building an adventure based in Xen'Drik rotating mainly around the lords of Dust. Anyone up? I'll start a new pbp page if you are up.
Just an average metalhead who plays DnD in his spare time.
PbP Character: Roberta Thalan, Void Beyond the Stars Otherside
PbP Character: Primus Eidolon, Eotha 2
PbP Character: Usmor Illiqai, Tomb of Corrosion
PbP Character: "Templar" Danver, You're the Villains
