Here's a few I've considered (that you're absolutely allowed to steal):
- Built by a mad scientist/wizard for evil purposes, ran away when they saw the error of their creator's ways, now on a mission to stop them from being more evil
- Doll/mannequin/suit of armor animated by a warlock patron or cleric deity to become their champion/do their bidding
- Doesn't remember their creation, but is covered in mysterious symbols/scratches/something. On a journey to find the circumstances/purpose of their creation.
- Druid that turns into robot versions of animals like a transformer
The one warforged character concept I have yet to find the right campaign for is a College of Spirits bard. They were created to essentially be a Zoltar-style 'fortune teller in a box'... only they escaped the box

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
A couple of ideas I popped on the three sentence backstory thread:
1)I lived with no fear of death, for in death I would serve as I did in life. My Oath binds me and even though my form died long ago I shall not rest until my armour sunders and my weapon breaks. Some may call me a Death Knight but I am no foul undead abomination, I am will and motivation given form and substance and I will crush evil and snuff it from existence.
*Haunted One for background, Warforged for race, Oath of Conquest Paladin for class. roleplay in a Death Knight style but with a bit more of a slant towards the light and being very anti-evil. Warforged is just for the abilities (such as being able to rest without having to remove your armour which is very useful) and helps create the image of being a suit of armour animated by an unrelentling desire to uphold the Oath they swore when they were still alive. Is there a body under the armour? Who knows, you're not likely to be disrobing any time soon.
2) Wood, straw and a Green Hag's magic bestow mobility and sentience to me. The hag sent me into the world to find my brother, another creation of hers but one of metal. My only lead is he was abducted by a leonin and a human girl with a dog who were in search of a wizard.
*race wise use warforged but just have a scarecrow appearance with little to no metal. Not sure as to backgorund or class but once decided its off to find a wonderful wizard and see if you can find your brother.

The clockwork Warforged background is intriguing, and while I can't recall the exact source, I did play one previously. For this character, the backstory involves awakening upon being rewound, possessing no prior memories, with fragments of their past surfacing gradually throughout our sessions.
An awakened training dummy that got tired of being constantly hurt, so they picked up a sword one day and started fighting back, got top ranks and eventually became an adventurer after realizing that they were "naturally talented"
is just a champion fighter and is not helpful at all in combat, only exists to soak up damage
A Pinnochio-esque tale - but with an adult body, of course. Or one of those lost love tales, where someone tried to build a replacement for a lost wife.
Or self-assembly. After some great battle (involving many warforged), on was reduced to rubble, but retained a tiny spark of life, and slowly rebuilt itself from scraps from the other fallen. It's original mind isn't retained - that wasn't one of the surviving components. Instead, it's tabula rasa, an empty shell that could become ... well, anything, good or bad.
Or maybe some sort of envoy (or exile) from Mechanus.

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.

Just thinking about creating a Warforged character and wondering what backstories people generally go for for this type of character?

I go with delusional identity theft, genocidal, or YOUR NEW METAL GOD. Normally I just end up making Ultron.
