My DM is using a squad mechanic in Out of the Abyss. I feel a bit over my head trying to create my squad. I feel like there is opportunity to make something super useful but also something useless. We start with 5 squad members
Mechanic:
Each group, on creation, selects 2 Combat Tags, 2 Proficiency Tags, and 3 Intrinsic Tags. In addition to these, 3 Individual tags may be selected from across all categories.
We can't help you without a lot more elaboration on how these tags work. I don't have any understanding of who gets what abilities when a tag is chosen, and there are abilities I have no basis for understanding, like Pure and Corrupt, or individual abilities, like Relentless 2, which is ordinarily a core mechanic of D&D - you never suffer additional penalties for losing a team-mate beyond, well, losing the team-mate.
When we use a group or squad type situation we tend to either use the average of the groups skill or we designate a particular member to do each action and use their scores.
We do not normally bring in anything so complex as your describing.

Are you saying that each player is going to run a group or team instead of just one character?
